In a competitive situation, HBO has bought Beat The Reaper, a drama series project from New Regency executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. The project, which feature scribes Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Ocean’s Thirteen) are writing, executive producing and attached to direct, is based on the debut book by physician/novelist Josh Bazell. It is a criminal/medical thriller about a young ER doctor whose life is upended when a patient comes through his ward that recognizes the internist from his old life — when he used to work for a notorious crime family. As his past comes crashing back and his enemies from his old life try to destroy him, he tries to hold his new life together while discovering that everything he knew about his past may have been wrong.

Ooh this sounds interesting! I'll definitely have to keep my eye out for it.
ReplyDeleteInteresting plot...
ReplyDeletepretty strong violence... pretty graphic and rough sex scenes...lots of inappropriate and extremely hillarious jokes...
ReplyDeleteI wonder how true to the material they're gonna stay ;-) definitely excited, I liked the book.
It's HBO. Just think of Oz...
ReplyDeleteThis sounds very interesting! And the best part is Leo will not be starring in it! XD
ReplyDeleteSounds interesting.
ReplyDeleteOkay, this sounds really interesting! I'd watch.
ReplyDeleteAll those serious, artsy flicks he's done since "Titanic" haven't made the money he needs, have they? When push comes to shove and the bill collector's at the door, forget your pretensions and do TV.
ReplyDeleteSounds great!
ReplyDeleteI;m cautiously optimistic. Don't really care about Dicaprio
ReplyDeleteHe has had a few big hits that made decent money like Inception, Shutter Island and The Departed, but I think most his roles still get recognized with award nominations it seems. I am not a huge fan honestly, but the boy is award committee catnip! XD
ReplyDeleteThis seems like a cool idea but the title makes me thing there's a supernatural element to this program, which there isn't, so I think a title change may be in order.
ReplyDeleteTo me it sounded like some supernatural game show where contestants won or died..
ReplyDeleteSo, a Japanese game show?
ReplyDeleteHa! I swear they have the most bizarre game shows!
ReplyDeleteI saw one with women sticking their heads into a glass box through holes in the bottom. Each had raw meat on their head and some meat eating lizard was dropped into the box. I guess the one that stayed in the longest and let the lizard eat off the meat helmet won! XD
Seriously bizarre!
Ha! I found a YouTube video of it!!

I remember seeing that. There really is no limit to how weird these shows get. There is also a disturbingly large portion of these game shows that involve nudity. It's bizarre.
ReplyDeleteOh my, I just laughed A LOT reading your (Bruce_F and DarqueMode) comments. Thanks for that :)
ReplyDeleteAnd what is wrong with these japanese game shows....my goodness, this is f*ed up.
I think when you cram all those people onto a tiny island that's under constant threat of being wiped out by a natural disaster, life becomes a little more extreme.
ReplyDeleteI don't know the book, but reading your short summary ... yah, I can see why HBO wants to pick that one up. It sounds like them.
ReplyDeleteI have a problem with most HBO shows. But Leonardo DiCaprio is involved in this, which is reason enough for me to give it a try, 'cause I usually love his work, on and off camera (yes, I'm outing myself as a fan here. Mock me all you want, I just can't help it). Besides, it does sound interesting. Oh, I just wish it wasn't an HBO show.
ReplyDeleteReally? A problem with HBO shows? Most things this network does are really great and some of them absolutely amazing like Oz, The Wire, Rome or currently Game of Thrones and Treme. Tastes differ, but I can't watch a lot of network TV anymore, with the exception of a few comedies like Community I almost exclusively watch only HBO, AMC, FX & SHO shows. Way better storytelling and acting than on network TV.
ReplyDeleteWell, as you said, tastes differ. I'm not saying the shows are bad or anything, it's just not my type of shows. The stories they tell I usually like, but I can't get into any of the shows. It's too much of everything. I can't even really explain it.
ReplyDeleteBut it doesn't mean I'll say no to any HBO show right from the start. I'll still give it a try.
Oh, and as for the acting ... tastes differ on that as well, I'd say. I won't argue that it's all great actors and I know far too few of the shows to actually compare the acting, but I think also network TV shows have great actors. Some better, some worse.
But it's all a matter of taste in the end, isn't it?
