Ratings Breakdown:
Monday is a very different evening minus Dancing With the Stars on ABC, of course. A night of encore telecasts on CBS was enough for the Eye net to dominate in the overnights, with a 0.6 rating point advantage over second-place Fox. Third overall was ABC, followed by NBC and very distant The CW.
In season (or series) finale news, two-hours of The Sing Off on NBC did not benefit from the absence of Dancing With the Stars at a 3.9 rating/6 share in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. Here is the half-hour breakdown:
The Sing Off (NBC)
8:00 p.m.: 4.3/ 7 (#4)
8:30 p.m.: 3.9/ 6 (#4)
9:00 p.m.: 3.7/ 5 (#3)
9:30 p.m.: 3.6/ 5 (#3)
Next week, NBC will fill the Monday 8-10 p.m. block with The Sing Off Holiday Special. As for the future of The Sing Off, NBC would be better off keeping the singing competition as a special programming event in December only.
At 10 p.m. on NBC was week five of low-rated newsmagazine Rock Center With Brian Williams at a typically lackluster (and third place) 3.1/ 5 in the overnights. Comparably, that is below what former occupant The Playboy Club was averaging here.
In week two news, ABC game show You Deserve It dipped to a fourth-place 2.8/ 4 at 9 p.m. minus the lead-in support from Dancing With the Stars. Compared to its week-ago debut (5.8/ 9 on Nov. 21), that was loss of a significant 52 percent. Retention for You Deserve It out of animated holiday special Shrek the Halls (#3: 4.3/ 6 at 8:30 p.m.), meanwhile, was a disappointing 65 percent. The next time someone tells you the lead-in no longer matters, remind that person of You Deserve It.
Earlier in the evening on ABC was a repeat of animated special Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas at a 4.8/ 7 in the overnights a 8 p.m. (#1t). At 10 p.m., a repeat of Castle finished second with a 3.8/ 6, which built by 36 percent out of You Deserve It.
Despite airing all repeats, CBS finished first in each of the six half-hours with its combination of How I Met Your Mother (5.2/ 8), 2 Broke Girls (5.8/ 9), Two and a Half Men (6.3/ 9 – #1 overall for the evening), Mike & Molly (5.5/ and Hawaii Five-O (5.1/ 8). Given the ongoing success of the Eye net’s Monday sitcom block, there is every reason to believe it will expand Thursday to two hours of comedies next season as well.
Second-place Fox was on the map with its pairing of Terra Nova (#2: 4.9/ 7), which concludes for the season (and potentially series) on December 19, and House (#2: 5.0/ 7), which is expected to conclude this spring. The CW could not compete, as always, with tired Gossip Girl (#5: 1.3/ 2), which dipped by 24 percent from one year earlier (1.7/ 3 at 9 p.m. on 11/30/10), and recent entry Hart of Dixie (#5: 1.5/ 2).
