Game of Thrones - Which "A Clash of Kings" Characters are absent from the cast list?

Nov 19, 2011

Filming on Thrones is set to wrap in Northern Ireland tomorrow, after which there will be only a few weeks of “beyond the Wall” filming in Iceland. With the casting of Rattleshirt, that contingent of characters has now been filled. So I think we can say with assurance that the season two cast for Game of Thrones is now complete.

However, those who’ve read A Clash of Kings may notice some prominent characters absent from the cast list. Let’s take a look at those characters and discuss whether we think we will see them eventually, or if they are at risk of (gulp) being cut from the series entirely.

  1.  Yes, thank you. No Reeds OR Reek. They'll probably have to be introduced later, which really doesn't make any sense.

  2. Filming is wrapping so soon? Damn that seems surprising

  3. It's wrapped up in Ireland. They still have the Iceland filming and a lot of post-production...  and then maybe reshoots etc

  4. I don;t have any issue with any of the "minor" characters left out of Season Two as far as we know I guess.

The Tully clan will come into play next season. Postponing it this year lets them concentrate on Robb and the Rob/ Jeyne Story  as he is battling his way across the North. They can pick up the book story lines next season without missing a step as far as the Tullys go.

Except for the fan-favorite Blackfish. He is fairly minor , albeit quite fun. Unless GRRM has some future Brynden stories in the last books I do not see Blackfish being in the TV series. He just is not needed honestly.  Edmure can do most of the Blckfish's bits as well and that fleshes out Edmure's role  as a bonus.

I am one of the few that pretty much hated the Reeds so I will not miss them at all. I think they are needed though as far as one characters journey goes, so they should turn up in some incarnation next season. That story may play out better and more interesting if it's shortened up a season. I think it will be a good thing in the end to  have them arrive in Season Three.

I do wonder what they will do without Reek this year....
Maybe they will concentrate on showing more of Bran's Greendreams this season and delay his book two story until next season. Giving them a reason to delay Reek's "introduction".

I'm a bit confused why the Brave Companions are not cast this season. They are important to Arya's story and while I an see them pushed back a year, I don;t know what Arya will be doing this year then.... I'm intrigued, but not worried.

Most the other cut cast listed is easily left out of the season or if they use a featured extra in the role and not a full cast member.

  5. I agree.
I think if they maybe if they revisit Bran's Greendreams that were suppose to be more deeply explored in Season One they can extend the time before the Reeds are introduced.  Once the dreams are established this season they can bring in the Reeds at the start of next year and they fit a bit better into Bran's world.

That would also push Reek back by necessity...
Although that puts so much into next year. I can see the Reeds arriving in episode 1 of Season 3 and then Reek doing his thing in episode 2 of Season 3 and those two events will set the tone for that part of the world....

Just some thoughts... no idea how it will play out really, but I cannot wait for April!

  6. Here is a great comment from Winter-is-Coming by Fire and Blood.
This really makes a lot of sense as to why so many characters will be cut each season, starting with Season Two.
"I know this goes against conventional purist thought, but there are two major reasons why I think the Tullys, the Reeds, the Walders, Strong Belwas, and all these other non-essentials are being shoved aside.Or at least shoved to season three.1. Cast size. People. People! Look at the freaking cast. Season one had a record-setting 79 cast members—not including 11 featured extras, which brings the total to 90. No other show has had anything near as sprawling a group, especially given the fact that we only had 10 episodes. 21 characters perished in season one (5 dead featured extras included), leaving us with a carryover of 69 characters for season two. So then you add the 35 news characters (not counting featured extras) for this new season, gifting us with a grand sum of 104 characters we have to find places for in front of the camera—some way, some how—and manage to do it sometime within 10 episodes. I don’t run a television show for a living (I only critique them) but I’m not sure some of you realize what a gigantic task this is. Not just from a cohesive storytelling viewpoint, but from a “maintaining viewer interest” viewpoint. New viewers–the non-book readers we oft mock—will be especially put upon to try to remember who is allied with whom, who is friends with who, etc. It’s by no accident that they made Kit Harrington wear a light colored pelt over his blacks. Sure, we knew who he was… but newcomers might not be able to distinguish between one black-cloaked dude and the next. Did it make sense from a story standpoint? No. But sometimes people need visual clues. For the non-initiated, it’s gonna be tough trying to figure out who’s who. And so I agree, for the sake of the show’s success—trim the fat.2. It really is just 10 episodes. Book 2 was longer than book 1. And yet still—we have only 10 episodes to work with. Contrast that with the fact that we’re almost definitely getting book 3 filmed in TWO ten-episode chunks. This leaves a hell of a lot more leeway where introducing characters (the Reeds) or new locales (Riverrun) is concerned. The one character I see as vital who’s still missing is Ramsay Bolton. He really should be the one responsible for [removed for spoilery] -  Reek's actions in Book Two . I would be hard-pressed to create a better villain for that purpose. But the rest? Chaff. We have Dany, we have Jon. We have Tyrion, and Catelyn. We have the kids. We have Stannis, Melisandre, Roose Bolton… and the list goes on (and on). What else do we need? I mean really need, that we can film in this 10-episode chunk? I’m just asking you to think with your heads here."

  7. I like the Reeds and I´m a little disapointed that I´m not gonna see them this season, but I´m guessing they want a Stark to hang around Winterfell a bit longer and that´s why they will wait till season 3.

I´m not worried about Reek. I think he has been cast....you know by who. Reeks story can never work excactly like in the books. Sadly, it was a great surprice.

BUT I have to say that Ramsay Bolton will be missed.

  8. I guess that the 2nd books has much more characters than the first book. Whilst reading I I often had problems to remember to connect the names to the characters, so I'm not too upset that they cut some for season 2.

Although it would have been nice to see "Reek". Without him, they really would have to add something to the Winterfell storyline to keep it interesting. Bran's chapters weren't really my favorite in Clash of Kings, besides his last ones.
