FX is not moving forward with Outlaw Country.
The project, which is both a crime thriller and family drama set against the backdrop of organized crime and royalty in the south, had been awaiting a decision for months.
The collaboration between FX Productions and Fox TV Studios, which went through some retooling earlier this summer, starred Luke Grimes, Haley Bennett, Mary Steenburgen and John Hawkes.
Outlaw had been pitted against FX's other pilot option, comic book adaptation Powers. The waiting game carried on care of the network's desire to see the latter's special effects, but after seeing a finished product the network has requested similar retoolings, according to sources.
Powers, a Sony TV production, is based on the long-running Image/Icon comic series by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming is a police procedural with supernatural element. Jason Patric stars as Christian Walker, a cop who works in the Powers division of the police force and deals with crimes involving those endowed with special abilities.

That's unfortunate, I was really hoping Outlaw Country would be picked up, it would have been great seeing Steenburgen & Hawkes on a regular basis and the premise sounded interesting too.
ReplyDeleteI'm also a bit concerned about Powers. Didn't they already request some re-shoots in the past? And is it really a procedural? I wasn't aware of that, but being a fan of serialized TV, this doesn't make me very happy.
I wasn't aware of Outlaw county, but had been wondering about Poweres. Guess I will have to wonder a bit longer.
ReplyDeleteAh, Outlaw Country sounds interesting!
ReplyDeleteDamn, they are passing on an interesting premise to make Grimm/SPN :s
ReplyDeleteWell, Powers has been in some form of development for some time now and
ReplyDeleteFX seems to be determined to pull it off, they already invested quite a
lot of time and money in this. I suppose both pilots didn't test well.
Outlaw Country sounds pretty dark and gritty, these kinds of dramas
aren't for everybody. And I haven't read the Powers comics, but I read
several times that it is problematic material to adapt for TV with
things that look good in a comic but look weird or lame on TV.
Here's an interesting quote of one of the replies on Deadline:
"The big problem with this comic book property is that it’s fairly “meta”
and lacks real originality. Because it’s filled with “pastiche”
characters that are repetitive plays on existing superheroes, the viewer
really needs a working knowledge of comics to get half the references."
Also there's the question how long the existing cast can stay around while they are retooling the show.
I was very interested when I first heard about this adaption and I would
still watch at least a couple of episode in case it gets picked up, but
I'm not absolutely convinced anymore that this will be a great show.
That's a shame, Outlaw Country sounded really interesting, and actually better suited to FX than Powers, especially with Justified on the network.
ReplyDeleteThat's to bad,it sounded very interesting, better then what going with.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to see "Powers". It sounds interesting especially with Jason Patric and Lucy Punch on it.
