Braquo - Season 1 - On the air on FX UK

Good news, everyone ! FX UK is broadcasting the first season of Braquo right now, each Sunday at 10pm (french with english subtitles). Actually, it started on Sunday, October 30, so the first three episodes have already been broadcasted but maybe the channel will air reruns.

I've seen the first season and trust me, if you have the opportunity to watch the show on FX UK (after catching up on episodes 1 to 3, having already aired), or elsewhere for that matter, do it. You will enjoy Braquo if you like The Shield, and raw, gritty copshows like that (Braquo reminds me of it with its depiction of the downfall of a squad of cops). Braquo is even edgier and more violent. I recommend it and I personally am eager to watch season 2 next week (which will pick up right where season 1 ended).

For those who don't know the show (FX UK does a better job than me in presenting it, but still), Braquo is a french thriller series revolving around rogue cops, produced and broadcast by pay-cable channel Canal+. Here's FX UK homepage for Braquo, with a presentation, photos, wallpapers, videos, etc. If you want to have a glimpse at the first scene of episode 1.01 (subtitled in english), click right there (the cop in this opening scene is not one of the main characters, although this is the trigger for all the trouble the four main characters will get into afterwards). Viewer discretion is advised.

Season 1 (8 episodes), written by Olivier Marchal (36 Quai des Orfèvres, MR73) and directed by Olivier Marchal & Frédéric Schoendoerffer (Agents Secrets, Switch), first aired in October 2009. Season 2 (8 episodes), written by Abdel Raouf Dafri (Canal's series La Commune, the Mesrine dyptich, Le Prophète) and directed by Philippe Haïm (Barracuda, Secret Défense) & Eric Valette (Une Affaire d'Etat, La Proie) will premiere in France next Monday at 9pm on Canal+ (2 episodes back to back each week for 4 weeks until the finale on December 12). The DVD/Blu-Ray sets will be released on December 14 (season 1 is already available on DVD/Blu-Ray).

As far as I know this is the second Canal+ series that is exported across the Channel. The first one is Canal+'s landmark series, Spiral, aka Engrenages in french (meaning 'cogs'). The first three seasons (28 episodes in total) of this cop series aired on BBC4, and the DVDs are available in the UK. Go for it, it's compelling TV. Like Braquo, Engrenages is serialized, each season covers one investigation (with multiples ties between seasons, of course, but the way the show is written is like 24, Dexter, The Wire or Damages, if you will).

Also, since I'm talking about Canal+ original series, the new supernatural drama series Les Revenants, talking about dead people coming back to life and trying to reajust to society and reunite with their loved ones, will enter in production very soon. All 10 episodes will be shot on location from February to June 2012 in Seynod, Haute-Savoie, and it will air in the fall of 2012 on C+. Thanks to Tagne for the information.

Still no word on the renewal of Borgia, but Tom Fontana is already working on the second season, Canal is pleased with the great reviews and with the high, steady ratings throughout the season, which ended last night (the Blu-Rays and DVDs will be out next Thursday). I'm sure it's a matter of time before season 2 of Borgia is officially announced.
