The Walking Dead - Season 2 - Robert Kirkman Interview

You wrote the first episode of season 2; how is it for you to go back and explore a time period of the book that is so far behind you?
Robert Kirkman: Well I mean, it's exciting for me just because this is material that I'd written so long ago and so when I read the early issues of Walking Dead, I'm constantly kind of like, "Oh you know, I could've done this better and I could've done this, or this would've been neat." It's nice to go back and revisit something you've written like that and be able to tinker with it for a new medium. That part of it is pretty exciting for me.
But also, it's fun to work with the writer's room and allow them to come up with different ideas and suggestions to improve the overall work as a group.

Right, totally. Obviously the show is an entirely different beast from the comic, but how do you balance taking it in these new directions while maintaining the cores of each character that's already been established in the book?
Kirkman: On its surface, I guess there is a tendency to look at characters like Andrea and just sort of be like, "Oh my gosh, when is she going to be a sharpshooter? What is going on? Why are they doing this!" But you know, I have to remind people that there have only been seven episodes. And you know, you kind of have to give us a little bit of time to build the characters up like we did in the comic book series. So while some things may seem a little bit more different than you might think, we're getting there. That's what I'm mainly trying to say. I like keeping things a little bit different here and there, just because I've done this before and I've told these stories. It would be a little bit dull for me to just be adapting the comic book directly and have everything happen exactly the same way.
And also, the comics are fairly popular and a lot of people read them. I would hate to lose the sense of surprise that you get from the comic books in the TV show just from everybody having read the comics and you know, be expecting certain things and feel like they know what's going to happen. I like being able to shock people. The first episode of this season is a really good example of that.
