"The only thing we can't keep you safe from is your own cuteness." —Reagan
"That's indestructible." —Chris
News of Steve Jobs's death broke less than fifteen minutes before the latest episode of Up All Night aired. It gravely affected the way I was able to enjoy the episode due to the shock factor.
Regardless, I'd say this wasn't Up All Night's best episode (I believe the second and third ones take that title in a tied battle) but it wasn't bad either. The episode finds Chris and Reagan realizing that her car isn't exactly practical for a family of three, so they end up having to shop around for a new car.
What follows is a few gags about "bland" cars, notably a van that's "beige" — "actually, we call this color champagne" — that found me staring blankly because I thought the van was actually really nice looking, considering it was an SUV actually. Also, I'm not a huge car person… so there's that. But it's obviously not something I can relate to.
Though I didn't exactly get huge laughs from the latest installment (and it could very well be the shock factor as I stated), I smiled the entire way through. Applegate and Arnett have this fluid chemistry that radiates onscreen, and it especially shines whenever their child Amy is in the picture. That quote posted above may very well be the lamest and most adorable thing anyone has said on TV — and they sold it.
And if the show wants to take a break from laugh out loud moments and do more of that, then I'm fine with it.
The same goes for Ava's caricature storyline where a magazine says she's not the most learned and she gets into a craze about having to interview and economist on her show, which seems to be where her character has settled: someone who's spontaneous and goes in deep on her ideas. It also allowed for Chris to show off his pre-Mr. Mom skills and gave Ava one of the better lines, I think: "…nerd."
That said, I did still laugh: Nick Cannon's Calvin singing with Ava was hilarious to me, when they forgot Amy on the house stoop was chuckle-inducing, or "it's so practical!" when Reagan realizes all the beach stuff is already in the car at the end.
This episode proved to me even more that out of all the new comedies this season, that I've watched, Up All Night very well might have the cast with the most chemistry (despite its Ava issues). There's not one person I have quibbles about.
I'm sure new parents can relate to this show a lot more. I'll have to give this one a second viewing.
