I thought about that too... I guess we are just to assume that the circumstances are so dire on Earth that going there was better than doing nothing - even if going there meant death.
They must have had some way to identify what the portal was, i.e., something that distorted time. And they did send the probe through before they sent any humans through.

There's still the massive plot hole in that scientists just decided to send people into this thing with nothing to hint at what it did.
