The Simpsons - Facing Cancellation?

Oct 4, 2011

As Homer Simpson would put it, “D’oh!”

It looks like The Simpsons—20th Century Fox Television’s multibillion-dollar cash cow, the anchor of the Fox network’s Sunday prime-time schedule, and the longest-running sitcom in the history of broadcasting—might stop production after the current 23rd season ends next spring.

The reason is a negotiating impasse between the studio and the six principal actors who voice the beloved characters on the animated series that hilariously satirizes middle-class Midwestern angst.

Difficult bargaining is nothing new for the show, which was created by James L. Brooks and Matt Groening. Fox studio execs have occasionally threatened to replace uncooperative cast members with sound-alike actors. But for the first time in nearly a quarter century of haggling, the executives have insisted that if the cast doesn’t accept a draconian 45 percent pay cut, The Simpsons will die an abrupt death as a first-run series.

A Fox Television spokesman had no comment by late Monday night.

The ultimatum was delivered Monday evening as Fox spurned the actors’ proposal—delivered late last week—to take around a 30 percent pay cut in exchange for a tiny percentage of the show’s huge back-end profits—amounting to untold billions—from syndication of the show around the globe and merchandising of Simpsons clothing, lunchboxes, stamps, DVDs, a feature film and video games, among other paraphernalia. The series is produced by the 20th Century Fox studio and aired by the Fox network, both News Corp. companies, but the studio reaps the ancillary rewards.

  1. anyone who is aware of hollywood accounting will be stupid to agree to a pay cut in favor of profit participation. Most of the big studio films which make hundreds of millions of dollars, on paper, don't even turn a profit.

  2. I don't blame em' hell they been doin it for almost 25 years, then bang the boss wants to take half your pay. I'm with the actors on this. Seems that fox should agree to their demands since in all honesty they are essentially giving fox money back by take a cut.

  3. Exactly. 9 times out of 10 "losing money" just means "turning less of a profit than the execs would like".

  4. Noooooooo. I haven't watched in awhile, but it's been on for longer than I've been alive! They can't do this.

  5. Wow, that's sad. The Simpsons is better than some their animation block, anyway. :c

  6. It will be a sad, sad day when it finally ends but I honestly don't blame them if they don't agree to it. Asking them to agree to almost half their pay is pretty disrespectful to people who have been working on the show for 23 years.
Best case scenario, they say they're not in it for the money and agree to it... I don't see that happening though because the deal is BS. I just want it to keep going so South Park (and any other adult animation) can't pass it to claim the longest running animation title because really, they don't deserve it more than The Simpsons.

  7. Asshole move by FOX. When the actors decline the deal, FOX will then try to make it look like they are the reason it was canceled.

  9. The reason might be rather questionable, but story-wise it's time to end it. Show past its prime long ago.

  10. This article is clearly biased in favour of the artists, I wonder firstly what that "tiny" percentage is, secondly, how much it is and thirdly how it compares to others. Im betting that its a lot more than any other animated show makes.

  11. Oh God, this can't happen. The Simpsons has been a major part of my life for many years. And it's funnier now than it was ten years ago. If it got cancelled, I don't know what I would do.

  12. I'm actually very surprised at how much this cast makes, considering the show's decent but not great ratings.  The principal cast members of The Simpsons make more money per episode than most actors do on hit network dramas.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if this is the end of the show.
