October 13, 2011 — CBS Corporation and Warner Bros. Television Group announced today a licensing agreement with Netflix [Nasdaq: NFLX] allowing U.S. members of Netflix to instantly watch previous seasons of scripted series that air on The CW from its current schedule through the 2014-15 season.
As part of this four-year output deal, Netflix has licensed the rights to stream more than 700 hours of previous-season episodes of The CW’s young-skewing dramas as well as future programs. These rights extend for four years after each series, current or future, ends its broadcast run on the network. The CW content can also be made available via traditional syndication windows, electronic sell-through services and, on a partial-season basis, through authenticated cable providers.
Programming available to Netflix members will include the eight dramas on The CW’s Fall 2011 schedule, including new series “Ringer,” “Hart Of Dixie” and “The Secret Circle;” returning hits “The Vampire Diaries,” “Gossip Girl,” “90210,” “Supernatural,” “Nikita” and mid-season series, “One Tree Hill.”
Previous seasons of “The Vampire Diaries,” “Gossip Girl,” “One Tree Hill” and “Nikita” will be available to watch instantly on October 15, with previous seasons of “Supernatural” and “90210” beginning in January 2012. Episodes of all scripted series airing on The CW this broadcast season will premiere for Netflix members in Fall 2012. In addition, all episodes of future scripted series appearing on The CW through the 2014-15 season will be available to stream from Netflix through a commensurate window.
With this agreement, Netflix members can catch up on prior seasons of the network’s addictive serialized dramas streaming from Netflix as well as watch new episodes on The CW during their in-season broadcast.
“This is a forward-thinking agreement for a network whose programming occupies a unique space in the content marketplace,” said Leslie Moonves, President & Chief Executive Officer, CBS Corporation. “It is a model that opens a new door for The CW programming to expand its audience reach through the terrific Netflix service, and creates a brand-new window for CBS and Warner Bros. to be paid for the content we supply the network. It also further illustrates how new distribution systems are providing premium content suppliers with additive revenue streams while still preserving traditional monetization windows.”
“This proves once again the overriding importance of content in our business, while showing how emerging platforms such as Netflix are adding value to the traditional TV ecosystem,” said Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros. “And to open a new window like this for our television product strengthens the increasing value of our powerful, deep and growing portfolio.”
“We have long admired the CW’s ability to connect so passionately and directly with a very important and difficult to reach demographic,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix. “This is programming for the on-demand generation and we hope this agreement deepens the relationships viewers already have with these powerful entertainment brands.”
“This agreement is a clear example of why content creators and providers can and will grow stronger through technology partnerships tailored to the consumer,” said Bruce Rosenblum, President, Warner Bros. Television Group and Office of the President. “It extends our traditional syndication windows with a strong, additive revenue play perfect for serialized dramas, and portends even greater growth opportunities for our studio as we continue to explore and define the marketplace.”
“This deal works across multiple levels for us,” said Mark Pedowitz, President, The CW. “Not only will we be able to recruit new viewers for our shows through the powerful reach of Netflix, but it also makes The CW an even more attractive option to the creative community.”
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
ReplyDeleteHaha wow. I was just saying yesterday that a channel like the CW would be smart to sign a deal with Netflix.
ReplyDeleteOn another note...goodbye free time.
Finally I can check out Supernatural. Have been hearing great things about it for a while now.
ReplyDeleteGood for the people who get Netflix, I guess ...
ReplyDeleteMust be a good thing then. Awesome.
ReplyDeleteDAY=MADE.
ReplyDeleteNow I can sample Nikita, and watch every episode of supernatural...oh wait...I already have the DVDS. Oh well, my friends with netflix have no excuse now. :D
Wow!!! The new owner is doing really REALLY well! :) Way to go CW!
ReplyDeleteYou'll love it! Enjoy! :)
ReplyDeleteNow if only we didn't have import regulations so this could go worldwide. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteYay! Wish I had money for Netflix, though.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Smallville?
ReplyDeleteOn a related note....
ReplyDeleteFree time = down
Bandwidth usage = up
Can people who live not in the US still watch the shows? I watch it on megavideo and videobb and i cant watch netflix because i live not in the US. Why do they show netflix not wordwide?
ReplyDeletenow..... if only other networks could get their minds set right as well!!
ReplyDeleteIt would have been great if this could have also work in Canada. I don't get the CW in Quebec. I have to find other ways to watch my shows... :(
ReplyDeleteomgg!! this just made me sooo happy!
ReplyDeleteWhere is the source for this article? Where is it from?
ReplyDeleteLooks good! Now Netflix Canada needs to figure out a way to actually get content worth watching and more people would sign up.
ReplyDeleteGood news! Also further acknowledgement that The CW recognizes that the "younger" and tech savvy CW fans are finding alternative ways of watching the CW shows and is actively encouraging Netflik streaming as a one of legit means of "catching up" with shows you haven't sampled yet or even keeping up with new episodes.
ReplyDeleteMany CW shows have been offered on Netflix DVDs (prior seasons, that is) but never streamed which is the only way I access Netflix. (On a side note Netflix has abandoned plans to split their streamed content from their DVD content, calling the separate company "Quixter" or smth like that).
Apparently this news was from a CW Press Release but I read it on TVbythenumbers and also the full article posted on WinchesterBros website.
ReplyDeleteNow my Netflix Instant-only friends have no more excuses not to watch Supernatural!
ReplyDeletenow how about streaming on netflix in CANADA!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove it!! Excellent marketing move *applauds*
ReplyDeleteYou will not be disappointed!
ReplyDelete*nods* I couldn't agree more. The new CW president seems really invested in the network!
ReplyDeleteSadly I think Netflix Canada is doomed. When I first signed up in the US the Instant selection was just as bad but people stuck with it for the DVDs. That allowed Netflix to generate the revenue to pick up more shows and now the Streaming service is bigger than the DVD service.
ReplyDeleteIn Canada people aren't going to pay for just a small selection of streaming titles so Netflix won't be able to build up enough steam to afford better stuff.
I always wondered why Dawn never put these on Netflix, considering her always spouting how young people used alternative means to watch CW content.
ReplyDeleteExcellent news! I've been waiting for more CW shows to show up on Netflix. The only one worth watching they've had up has been Reaper.
ReplyDeleteEven though I've seen all the episodes already, I'm sure I will be watching all of SNP and Nikita again.
Pedowitz is correct, but you have to pay to be able to watch the streaming video. You can pay to rent movies, stream, or both.
ReplyDeleteYippy skippy!!! I knew there was a reason I didn't cancel my Netflix subscription and jump to Blockbuster's. This deal can only get better as the CW changes its focus from a narrow young women focus to something a bit broader. Best news I've had all week.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I hope you share your thoughts with us on SpoilerTV. We are a chatty group and love to hear what people new to the series think.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to trying Nikita. I have never seen a full episode and I hate jumping in mid-stream. This is a brilliant move on the CW's part. Here's hoping it improves ratings all around.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great sign that the new head is thinking out of the box and that's needed to keep the CW afloat much less its shows. I hope that as people are able to catch up on past seasons they will be more likely to watch the new seasons live. That would be a win all around and a great boon to the lousy CW ratings. Way to go Pedowitz!
ReplyDeleteI really hope this is successful for the CW because I don't see other networks following unless it is. I would love to be able to catch up on other shows legally.
ReplyDeleteThis is good news!
ReplyDeleteYES! This saves me from going out and buying a couple of these shows on DVD for the time being!
ReplyDeleteYou two should try Nikita. Heavy on action, light on emo. Season 2 especially has a little bit of a Burn Notice feel to it. The team is starting to gel and Birkoff adds some comic relief, in a nerdish kind of way.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe they didn't have a deal like this in the States before. I mean, we all know that the CW isn't the most gainful network. And this will put quite some money in their cash box, no?
ReplyDeleteThey have a deal with something comparable to Netflix (it's called Maxdome) here in Germany since a while.^^
