Arrested Development - A Timeline: From Concept to Series to Movie

Oct 5, 2011

Even if you've never watched one episode of Arrested Development, you likely got sucked into the tornado of cult fandom over the weekend when word spread that the once-cancelled sitcom was set to return to television. With a wildly passionate, banana stand loving fanbase that can tell Michael Cera apart from Jessie Eisenberg without the blink of an eye, it took mere minutes for the story to spread across the annals of the Web.

The entire cast of Arrested Development reunited nearly six years after the show got cancelled to announce the sitcom will return. While The New Yorker's Twitter feed initially broke the news, various articles (from IGN to TMZ) rapidly flooded Facebook -- as a point of reference, TMZ's short snippet of a story has over 86,000 "likes." The show may have only lasted three seasons in its initial run, but given its current cult-like following, we imagine the sitcom will fair plenty well when it does return.

But until we await that day, here's an Arrested Development timeline to better help you visualize how the series got to where it is today.

  1. Had to laugh at "banana stand loving fanbase that can tell Michael Cera apart from Jessie Eisenberg", that has actually been a problem for me for quite a while.

Well, great for the dedicated fanbase IF it comes back (Hulu apparently joined SHO & Netflix in being interested), I never really was able to get into the series. I watched some episodes (no idea how many) some years ago on German TV when they launched Comedy Central Germany and thought it was okay, but then stopped for no apparent reason and never continued watching. Maybe it's because of the German translation (ever since I started watching TV in English language it's hard to go back), but I never became a fan of the show.

  3. I couldn't imagine watching a dubbed AD. As you said, a lot would get lost in translation, plus the narrator was a big part of what made the show.

  4. I did the same when it started on Comedy Central here and thought it was shit, but then I watched again last year and now it's one of my favorite comedy shows :)

  5. I second that. *BOOM*

  6. I can't imagine that a dubbed AD can even hold a candle to the original, there's so much stuff that'd literally get lost in translation. And you have to watch from the beginning as there's an arc that runs through the entire series. From what I know about your comedy taste, I'm pretty sure you'll like AD if you give it another shot some time in the future. It's really a brilliant show with so many brilliant characters.

  7. The article reminds me of how silly TV ratings are and how FOX used to be today's NBC.

Great reunion photos... especially the "Chicken Dance"
