American Horror Story - Episode 1.02 - Home Invasion - Review

Oct 13, 2011

"I guess I'm just scared of being cut in half."

Last week, American Horror Story was an overwrought train wreck and I was wary of it bursting into flames in its second installment. But it didn't do that this week. Thankfully, it was actually… oh, what's that word… cohesive. There were some serious annoyances, of course, that were basically one and the same as the issues I had last week.

First off, seriously this fast editing is just to piss me off. I'm sure of it. The scene in which Vivien is telling Violet to call 911 and to go to her room, I felt like it was an episode of Gilmore Girls: Homicide! What was that? And it proceeded to do it throughout the episode (and before that scene, as well). There were still moments where characters just decide to change moods at the drop of a hat, like Ben's mistress who goes from talking about abortion to exclaiming "Yay, Pizza!!!" to almost screaming bloody murder when she sees him using his phone to then crying. Um. Okay. And of course, there's the whole let's-talk-about-psychotic-issues-like-nothing with Ben's latest patient. But at least she actually is pretty insane. (Never mind the fact that she's basically Tate in female form…)

And the reason it's evident as to why these are actual issues is because that cold open was absolutely fantastic, in spite of its Psycho-inspired music score. It was slow, and meticulous, and creepy, and shocking. I gasped at it all, especially when that knife came stabbing her in the back. That's what this show should be. Not this fast-talking gibberish I got for the next 85% of the episode. So much so I was actually disappointed when it cut away and we were in Ben's office with Tate.

But regardless of that, I was very much able to get sucked into it all. My toes curled and my stomach knotted every time that cupcake came onscreen. As soon as Constance was handing it out, to Vivien holding it (I don't know who holds a cupcake for three minutes and doesn't eat it, but whatever), to Violet holding it, I was anxious! Because of a cupcake. And when she placed it outside of her room, I thought "No, not the dog!!!" Thankfully, it was Ben's latest patient that suffered the wrath.

Also, I think the showrunners really hit a homerun with the entire home invasion part of the episode — right down to Tate axing her in half, her worst nightmare.

I don't exactly think the Harmons should have considered moving out already (which is a popular opinion) because not that many freaky things have happened to them. I think the writers have set up Viven's wanting to leave perfectly here. And, as they obviously will not be moving out, I look forward to seeing how they address her concerns once ghouls and goblins start becoming a factor.

Episode one most certainly put me off from this series, but episode two was a vast improvement. I can only hope they improve even more going into next week.

  1. Good review again. :)

This was a much better episode, but I think I'm done with the series...

Its just too obvious and contrived for me.

-Constance makes the cupcake to hurt Violet and in the end it saves her life.
-The house invaders come in to reenact the old crime and instead die as the victims died.
-What's crazy girl's nightmare? Being cut in half. So guess how she will die....
-Violet is done with Tate because of his overzealous scaring of the bully... but then she turns to him for more ghostly shenanigans.
-Violet is a bitch to her mom because she is "weak", and then Vivian's strength saves everyone.
-Ben tries to be there for the patient he had an affair with in her time of need and in return he is not there for his family in their time of need.
Probably a few more examples like this I forgot or missed....

Everything  each character says or does comes back on them in a tragic or ironic "twist". I can see why some people enjoy it or find it entertaining despite its flaws or quirks. I just don't personally find it that entertaining.

I hope it keeps getting better for you and the others that keep watching!

  2. I think the reason it is too obvious for you is because you keep trying to answer questions that the show is bring up now.

-Constance makes the cupcake to hurt Violet and in the end it saves her life.
*That's too obvious of a conclusion to make. Constance was too eager to NOT let Vivien and Ben eat the cupcakes. She knew that the home invasion would happen and set up the cupcake for one of the intruders to eat. That's why when he daughter came and told her there was a bad man next door, she did nothing, and in the end she, Tate, and Moira (the maid) were all working together.
*Also, I have a theory that Tate is Constance's son. She was saying earlier in the episode that she had one child who didn't have Down Syndrome. In the end, Tate is working with the other two. There's something there, and that's just my theory on it.
-Violet is done with Tate because of his overzealous scaring of the
bully... but then she turns to him for more ghostly shenanigans.
*She didn't actually turn to him, he was just there, and she didn't really want him there. But it was an emergency situation and he was trying to help. So wtf else was she supposed to do?
-Violet is a bitch to her mom because she is "weak", and then Vivian's strength saves everyone.
*The family is obviously broken, and Violet does not respect her mother for various reasons. Basically, I think that the goings on of this house are meant to make the characters become closer and stronger as a family and as individuals.
-Ben tries to be there for the patient he had an affair with in her time
of need and in return he is not there for his family in their time of
    need.
*She was a student, not patient. But regardless, she called him (and he tried to ignore her) and told him she was pregnant. He really had no choice but to go back and deal with it. I don't think he was necessarily trying to be there for her and comfort her so much as trying to rid her of his life for good. But this will be his struggle on the show, being present for his family and resisting temptations that he obviously has (as proven by the maid appearing youthful and beautiful to him only.)

And one thing I have to dispute from the review itself:
"There were still moments where characters just decide to change moods at
the drop of a hat, like Ben's mistress who goes from talking about
abortion to exclaiming "Yay, Pizza!!!" to almost screaming bloody murder
when she sees him using his phone to then crying."
*This is how it is supposed to be. This is showing how crazy her character may turn out to be; It's not bad writing or bad acting. I would think it's a fair observation to say she is obsessed with Ben and wants to be with him and is jealous of his family. She wants him to herself. It's very Fatal Attraction basically. So I don't see what is so weird about that.

I could honestly see how maybe the first episode put some people off (even though I loved it), but this episode sealed it for me that I LOVE this show. It's more than just a horror show, and if you watch it, you have to go into it expecting more than just a scare.

  3. I'm wondering if we just shut our brains down if it will be enjoyable in the same way that RINGER is! But I don't know.

  4. I guess, but the coke-addict did that in episode one (where she went from talking to honestly hurting my ears with how loud she yelled to eat the cigarette) and I just don't care for it.

  5. Well, it's all a matter of opinion obviously; I mean, Ringer wasn't THAT enjoyable for me, I got bored with it.
