The 2011 STV Character Competition - The Winner Announced & Final Words - Updated With Tweet From Misha Collins!

2011 Character Cup Cancelled Shows Castle Game of Thrones Grey's Anatomy SpoilerTV Article Supernatural Vampire DiariesUpdate: Rather awesomely, Castiel's portrayer Misha Collins has tweeted out about his winning the competition, jokingly stating he feels sad for Castiel's opponents as they stand no chance:
Always nice to see your voting makes a little difference to the people that are involved in the shows. Great work SPN fans...
Hey Guys,
Another year of SpoilerTV Show and Character competitions is over, and as a result of yesterdays huge turnout for the final of the 2011 Character Competition, I am delighted to announce that the winner is:
It was a clean sweep for Supernatural this year, taking both the Show and the Character Competitions. Whilst Castiel was perhaps not the expected winner, he is a deserving one after his fans found their way through a very tough run that included Malcolm Reynolds of Firefly, last year’s champion Jack Shephard of LOST, as well as Kate Beckett of Castle, Peter Bishop of Fringe and his own co-star in Dean Winchester. It was an impressive show, and therefore a worthy winner.
It was a huge day, with the Final being the most viewed page on the entire website (excluding the homepage... but only just :P) both yesterday (13th) and today (14th) up until the point of me posting this. Add to that almost 18,000 votes, over 1,000 tweets, almost 1,000 facebook likes as well as almost 400 comments and The Final was easily the biggest day of the competition. Supernatural though, emerges as the king once more...
However, other fans should have hope, as Supernatural has been given a run for its money on every occasion this year. Who can forget how close Fringe was to winning the show competition in a fight that swayed to and fro at every turn. The Vampire Diaries through Damon Salvatore have proven that their fanbase has grown following their huge defeat in the 2010 show final, giving their CW rivals an almighty run for their money. There is no denying that whilst Supernatural’s hold on the top prizes remains strong, it will face an even tougher challenge next year.
For now though, it is a day for Supernatural fans to be proud, they have completed the first whitewash of the STV competitions in only its second year of running.

It's been great fun and a pleasure to host the STV Competitions for the second year running, it's a feature that is continuing to grow and I hope to be able to improve it even further for next years 2012 Summer Season. With very rare exception every person I interact with is a fan of television, and a fan of certain shows and characters. It is a great world to be involved so heavily in, and I thoroughly enjoy being able to bring you a competition that often brings a lot of these communities together in one place to discuss and interact and spread the word about the shows they love.
There are many questions I have as I put these competitions to the back of my mind for a few months. Is it possible to find a better way to give both old and new shows a way to show their voice? Will Supernatural ever stop winning? Will any new shows from the 2011-12 season become big enough to create a force that could challenge the front runners next season?
There is still a lot of time left for all these queries to be answered, a good indicator will come in the STV End Of Year Awards which site owner DarkUFO is likely to run during the winter break over the new year. Make sure to tune in for those as well as potentially another competition that may run during January.
Look out also for Adam's TV Teasers, my own column where STV brings its own original TV content, teasers and spoilers as well as exclusive episode titles and synopsis'. This feature will be back tomorrow, and you can find it HERE once it is live.
I'm also a part of the STV Podcast, with my good friends and colleagues from the website TheODI, CJ & Heather. Check that out HERE as well...
All that is left for me to say is a huge thank you for playing. I hope you enjoyed it, regardless of how well your favourite character did. I know my picks all suffered early(ish) exits but I still enjoyed seeing the passion and determination of other fans fighting their corner.
Most of all, enjoy the 2011-12 TV Season, keep supporting your shows, keep your voices heard by the people who run the industry. If your voice can be big enough, then you can keep a show alive, whether it is on the screens or in its memory.
TV plays an important part in life. If gives you the chance to live in another world, sometimes only for a year, sometimes for much, much longer
TV is all about the experience. Here at STV, we help you experience those worlds every single day of the year.
I look forward to experiencing the rest of this year with you all, here.

Thanks to everyone who joined in the competition!
ReplyDeleteI hope you all enjoyed it... :)
Supernatural wins. I just hope this can pull more fans into the show. We need all the support.
ReplyDeleteAwesome stuff as always Adam, thanks so much for putting this altogether so well as always.
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff and it's great to see so many new faces in the comments and on SpoilerTV.
Already looking forward to next year!
yay to castiel!!!! he totally deserved to win with the amount of support he's had throughout this competition
ReplyDeletethanks so much for putting this all together :D, it's been so much fun
Thanks Adam, it was a lot of fun as always.
ReplyDeleteAt one point my bracket was in with then a chance!
In Cas We Trust :)
ReplyDelete"Will Supernatural ever stop winning?" NO! :-p
ReplyDeleteSo happy for Cas!I would have been happy for every SPN character, but I'm glad it's him!
Thanks for putting this together,it was really fun! : )
In Cas We Trust indeed! A much deserved win for the little angel who never gave up! Here is hoping that Cas will make his triumphant return to SPN very very soon!
ReplyDeleteYay Cas!
ReplyDeletei hope we never stop winning. i like winning, its so much fun seeing something i love so much do so well here. that i can share that love with other people
ReplyDelete:) Are you going to post the complete list? I mean, the rest of the characters rank... :) I'd like to see it!! :D
ReplyDeleteI could do... :P Let me see how long it's going to take :P
ReplyDeleteHe may be off the show (for now!) but I hope people and the CW appreciate how much we adore that nerdy little dude with wings, as well as the slightly insane Misha Collins, who plays him.
ReplyDeleteI'd watch him ANYWHERE. Doing ANYTHING. Thanks for giving us the chance to vote!
ok!! it would be great, but no hurry at all! :D
ReplyDeleteIn all honesty,I believe that the fandom is one of the reasons we still enjoy the show after 7 years. The main reason is because it's still awesome,of course, but when you can share it with someone, that makes the whole thing even greater!
ReplyDeleteGreat fun. Thanks again, Adam! Now, as you are pondering, "...is it possible to find a better way to give both old and new shows a better way to show their voice," some day I'd like to see a Classic Character Competition, which would be characters from finished shows. Just a suggestion.
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed that Dean doesn't win this time O________o I guess everybody misses Cas!!!
ReplyDeleteCas.. \\(*o*)// thanks Adam D Harris for hosting this, it's been exciting.. :D
ReplyDeleteI'll be sleeping now.. excuse me..
It was really very fun, although I've only voted in the last rounds. But, man... the excitment of these two last days was awesome!
ReplyDeleteYaaaay! IN CAS WE TRUST! So happy that he won! I would be happy for any Supernatural character, but Cas winning this mean so much, specially because of what happened to him lately on the show. And I'm glad Supernatural won the major competitions this year, this show is really awesome! Hope it never stops winning XD
ReplyDeleteIt's a great idea!
ReplyDeleteIt's done :)
ReplyDeleteWell Castiel is well deserving of the top place. Adam thanks for hosting :)
ReplyDeletewow! thanks a lot!! :D round 1 was really tough! we lost a lot of great characters there!!
ReplyDeleteFantastic poll, I followed it from the semifinal til now with increasing excitement (no fingernails left ;-)
ReplyDeleteThank you for these competitions , it`s always so much fun ;) Even with my favorite Dean not winning, I really enjoyed it and I´m also happy for Cas ;)
ReplyDeleteI have been around a while and in a number of different fandoms and I have *never* seen a character grip a fandom's imagination the way Castiel does. The untold story of this poll is the story of how a character became so beloved that fans pulled together a movement that would rival any political protest, how a character became such an archetype that he brings forth blood, sweat and tears in the quest to just get some recognition for him in a world where the critics don't look unless you're an AMC historical drama or a version of NCIS/CSI/OMGBBQ, and the very writers who created him don't seem to see his potential beyond as a deus ex machina (in Castiel's case, literally).
ReplyDeleteAre there characters that are deeper, more developed, given more riveting storylines? Undoubtedly. But I have never seen a character who is more *loved.*
I'm so happy Cas won! I love him a lot, but I honestly didn't expect that he would beat Dean. When he did, I had a lot of hope he could win the pool, but I know TVD fandom is a big and passionate one. But Cas actually won! And I'm really happy, because he is a amazing character played by an amazing actor in a amazing TV show! I'm this happy because this victory shows that people care a lot about Cas. We're worried about his fate and I know that this was an important factor in the big amount of votes he got, but if he wasn't an amazing character in the first place, people wouldn't care about his fate. I'm happy we could show our love for our nerd/BAMF/selfless/amazing/hot/cute/smart/clueless/lovely angel!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Cas! although Dean will always be my favorite :)
ReplyDeleteexactly. i would still love this show even if i hadn't found this mass of fellow fans here at spoiler tv but being able to talk about it and share the awesomeness with other devoted fans has made the experience of these last few seasons so much more enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteThanks for that write up. Couldn't agree more, TV is kind of fantastic. Also, these tournament/competition things are always a ton of fun, keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteOMG I'm just in tears... CAS I love you forever
ReplyDeleteHuge thanks for the great work here! I was totally enjoyed, despite I expected and wanted much higher places for Lost & Fringe. But still, Castiel was really cool :)
ReplyDeleteThis makes me miss CAS more...CAS forever!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad Castiel won! Supernatural was already a great show, but the introduction of Castiel took it to 11. :)
ReplyDeleteAnother awesome contest Adam. Thanks so much for entertaining us through the summer and into fall. I always look forward to these contests and its been a blast both defending my picks and hearing why other people picked theirs. As always, I find new shows to sample and others to give a second chance during these contests. Let's just say that my winter hiatus TV schedule is already filled up, so thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks Adam!! Wow,these last few days were very exciting, and i look forward to next year. For awhile i
ReplyDeletethought Fringe was going to win but that was not to be.Congrats to Supernatural and its fans(you are loyal, and passionate),But lets see what next year brings!!!!! :)
--as well as the slightly insane Misha Collins, who plays him--
ReplyDeleteSlightly insane? For what I saw from Misha Collins during conventions etc. up to now, the term 'slightly' is an understatement ;-)
Cheers for running this Adam :)
ReplyDeleteThis is the best coment I've ever read in these polls. And I've read many. Thanks for putting it into such well written words.
ReplyDeleteTHANK you. (this is me, just a different profile) :)
ReplyDeleteYay so happy that Supernatural in general took the crown this year :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Castiel and all Supernatural fans. Hope word reaches TPTB on how popular the character they recently eliminated is. We have to see him back on the show again. For now, I'm basking in the idea of him holding the title of favorite character for a year. Castiel, the little angel who could. :)
ReplyDeleteWell said. I never thought of it that way. But considering how Castiel was originally planned to appear in only 6 episodes and how his story grew to cover 3 seasons because of fandom love, I fully agree.
ReplyDeleteYes, I did. Castiel won and even though he wasn't really my choice I like him so it's ok. Plus I'm really glad that my favourites like Dean, Damon and Peter Bishop are very high;)
ReplyDeleteAlso I'm actually suprised that everyone from LOST lost;) so soon. Hope they ended up higher. But again, so should many of characters;)
Agreed.
ReplyDeleteMy bracket was ruined back in round 1..this was worst then my March Madness Bracket ugh. Maybe i should stick to predicting sporting events haha
ReplyDeleteYou should've mentioned how Dean and Castiel won most romantic couple award with over 7000 votes! That was all kinds of awesome.
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting this! I know it can't have been easy with the rabidness of some fandoms, one of which I'm a proud member of myself (SPN), but about this "Is it possible to find a better way to give both old and new shows a way to show their voice? Will Supernatural ever stop winning? Will any new shows from the 2011-12 season become big enough to create a force that could challenge the front runners next season?"
ReplyDeleteI've been chatting with a friend of mine about this, who loves SPN but is sort of annoyed how we squash new shows and how they don't get a chance and so on and so forth.
You could do a sub-competition or sub-poll/other division WHATEVER with new shows, like "Favorite New Character/Show on screen" or some such, where it has to have less than or around 2 or 3 seasons and no older. Could perhaps give new shows a chance to shine?
Thanks for doing it!
ReplyDeleteThank you :) (this is me, just a different profile)
ReplyDeleteLol, Misha tweeted about it xD
ReplyDelete@mishacollins
ReplyDeleteMisha Collins
I feel bad for the people in these competitions. It's not fair. It's like racing roller skaters against a Lamborghini. spoilertv.com/2011/10/2011-s…
I feel so much pride for my fandom right now. We really pull it together, and we get shit done, even when it gets tough. Cas deserved this win, especially since the writers really messed up in killing him. I hope they see this and realize they need to bring him back ASAP.
ReplyDeleteMisha tweeted aboutthis. How he's a fast car, and everyone else is a pair of roller skates :D
ReplyDeleteRe: Your comment about whether Supernatural will ever stop winning...if it ever does, whoever wins will really deserve it.
ReplyDeleteDon't know if this made the rounds to other fan sites that you visit, but it's not just winning polls that we're good at! When Jared and Gen announced they're expecting a baby and fans wanted to send gifts, they requested that gifts be sent to St. Jude's Children's Hospital instead -- and in about 24 hours, SN fans raised $8000. It's now nearing $10,000 and thats only what's been donated through wincherbros . com charity fundraising site (just in case anyone is interested).
ReplyDeleteOh Cas, why are you gone? this feels so much like an epitaph given the circumstances. I just wish he pulls a Lazarus on the show.
ReplyDelete9581 votes, our love letter to Cas.
Really liked this competition, also really glad Castiel won. His character can use all the positive references it can get :)
ReplyDeleteOh, Ans Scully, how long has she been out of the air? Yet she still is in the top ten. Awesome
ReplyDeleteWell it's already been confirmed that Misha will be back so Cas probably will too :)
ReplyDeletean understatement of an understatement, even.
ReplyDeleteWow, did you guys have any idea that Misha Collins (who plays Castiel) just tweeted about this :O
ReplyDeleteHe wrote on twitter:
" I feel bad for the people in these competitions. It's not fair. It's like racing roller skaters against a Lamborghini. http://www.spoilertv.com/2011/10/2011-stv-character-competition-winner.html "How awesome! :D
awesome!
ReplyDeleteLove that Misha tweeted about this a few hours ago. Castiel deserves to win. We miss him so much on SPN. It's just not the same without him. PS: Dear Misha, if you ever read this: MARRY ME! <3333 (*even if its in another lifetime*)
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting this, Adam! It'd be cool if your site made some kind of certificates to give the celebs like E! does with their awards.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Cas. You really deserve it. I miss you like whoa. :(
ReplyDeleteI wish! We'll start off with getting access to the celebs, then we can award them accordingly... :P
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Castiel.
ReplyDeleteYay go Cas!
ReplyDeleteEven if this man's tweet is supposed to have been a joke, it is an insult to see him compare this angel character to a Lamborghini and others such as Jack Shephard, Locke, Walter Bishop, and all other memorable characters to roller skaters. It is just arrogant. Just because a show has a lot of fans that are very present online and have the free time to organize mass votings does not mean that the writing and acting of said show is the best.
ReplyDeleteLet's see if this character will be remembered in 20 years by anyone that is not a big fan of the show. Jack Shephard, for instance, will.
BTW, before the haters attack: I have nothing personal against the character or this actor, I just found the tweet tasteless, disrespectful and obnoxious.
Damn, I got more out of reading this post than watching the Emmys this year. O_o
ReplyDeleteAnd now I'm anxiously awaiting Andy's End of the Year awards because I cannot for the life of me recall what that is!? (Is that new?)
Incredible job, Adam! I hope the higher-ups of STV know how much your influence has had on this website, and its expansion of community in the last two years!
OMGBBQ!
ReplyDeleteHe didn't equate the characters themselves to rollerskates. He pretty much just stated the part about "[the] show has a lot of fans that are very present online and have free time to organize mass votings"... and that was his way of saying thanks for all the votes.
ReplyDeleteI think you're making a mountain out of a molehill with that one, but that's just me.I would argue that the only reason characters are "memorable" 20 years after they've finished their run on television is because certain people in the media like EW or Rollingstone or something post their "Greatest characters of television" lists which tend to be filled with the most overrated of their time, instead of the actual best characters. (I would argue though that Jack is probably the latter)
The same argument about Castiel could be made about several other characters in television, some truly incredibly written, and amazingly acted: Who else besides big-time fans of the show "Breaking Bad" will know about the plight of Walter White?
Who outside of the cult-like fandom of "Veronica Mars" or "Dexter"/"Six Feet Under" will know about the lively Kristen Bell or the devious Michael C. Hall?
That point is moot in my humble opinion because a lot of great things are forgotten in 20 years.
My last point is that I don't hate you. Misha's comment is a bit obnoxious, but your comment is no less fraught with venom than his tweet was with backhanded humor, even if you placed a disclaimer at the end.
While I'm not a huge fan of Cas, I find Misha to have an amazingly sense of humor and a sharp wit. I love that he took the time to acknowledge the win in his usual 'unusual' way.
ReplyDeleteThis was great! Thanks for organizing! Any yeay for Castiel!! ;D
ReplyDeleteLOL Cathy! It means you don't really know Misha at all! He's the nicest person & his twits are hilarious. He just tweeted Jared's baby as half human & half moose.
ReplyDeleteLol I’m guessing you don’t know anything about him, but that’s
ReplyDeletejust the way he tweets, just go to his account. This is just his way of
thanking the fandom, you’re not supposed to take him seriously.
i love misha is so honest with how expres emotion is like a child discover new things and learnig about it making fun with it.thats why we the fans love ,respect and admire him is pure {inocense} in a childish way (mistchivius}
ReplyDeleteIf characters like Jack are remembered in 20 years by anyone who's not a big fan of the show, it will only be because LOST is probably the most overrated show I've ever seen. Face it, only the fans remember their characters after 20 years unless someone reminds the others. With all the LOST hype, I believe I will have people reminding me Jack in 20 years, but what does that matter anyway? It won't make him a better character in my eyes.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, Misha was only referring to how strong the SPN online fanbase is.
lol Misha. Gotta love this guy. Regardless of what the SPN fans think about Castiel, it's been a blast having Misha around for all these years.
ReplyDeleteIKR? XD
ReplyDeletethat tweet makes my day!! over the rooftop Happy!! :D
ReplyDeleteSo glad that Misha won this, maybe SPN will bring him back sooner rather than later. Great poll Adam, looking forward to next year, but I do think it may have caused me to get an ulcer. lol Since Damon & Castiel are 2 of my favorite characters it was rough and I did a lot of talking to myself. I would like to know which TV brothers would win, it would be the Winchesters for me every time.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen the movie Finding Home, he is awesome in it. I have loved Misha as Castiel, Jimmy, Hippie Cas, God and vessel..so they can bring him back in any form and I will be happy, but do love the helpful Cas best.
ReplyDeleteOkay Misha nice of you to ak
ReplyDeleteLets try that again,It was really nice that Misha acknowledged the win,but he better watch out for those
ReplyDelete"ROLLER SKATES',and it seems cats who love walking over, and lying atop my laptop! :)
It was a joke. That's just how Misha is. He makes everything into a joke. One of the characters he won against is played by one of his close friends. It's not as if he is actually insulting his acting skills. Give me a break.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea who Jack Shephard even is. I only know he was a Lost character because of this website. That show has never interested me and I watch A LOT of television besides just Supernatural. But I will always remember Castiel. If you knew anything about the fandom you would know he has really changed peoples lives. I'm not joking, that is literally how special he is to some people and how much they connect with them. He really gave something new to the show and to fans. I will remember Castiel in 20 years. I will remember Castiel until I die and I know that for a fact. Not just because of the character but because of the actor who plays him who you call "arrogant" who has made me want to be a better person because of his passion for charity work and incredible life experiences.
It's not that our fandom just has the "free time" to organize mass voting. Most of us are working or students (I'm a mom and studying to be a teacher) and don't have all the time in the world to play online. We are just incredible passionate about our show and our characters and they win because they deserve it. You just reinforce that belief with your post because it reminds me how underrated Supernatural really is. People have no idea how great it is because they only pay attention to the shows that networks don't completely neglect. But they deserve the recognition and the attention and the awards and we fans will try hard to give them that because they certainly aren't getting noticed because of their promotion or budget.
hey- well done, great comp.
ReplyDeletejust wondering, how is it decided who is pitted against whom? because early on some really strong characters were against each other and it seemed kinda unfair given their appeal - what im saying is, that it appeared as tho some slightly weaker candidates got thro by chance/luck??
im not trying to be negative, really im just curious of how they are paired off?
Thanks for the competition, look forward to the next :) cheers
It's the SpoilerTV awards they did at the end of last year - December-ish during the winter hellatus. Supernatural did very well in that one too.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.spoilertv.com/2010/12/spoilertv-awards-2010-voting-open-day-1.html
OH YEAH I remember those trophies... o.o
ReplyDeletelol
It was great Adam, thanks!
ReplyDeleteTee hee! Love Misha's quote.....
ReplyDeleteThat´s
ReplyDeleteMisha Collins for you! He has this rare talent that with every tweet 99% of the
people love it and take it as a joke. And always 1% wants to crucify him. We
all remember his jokes about the riot in Great-Britain or about this little
church group, who called him the Antichrist. For me, these were amusing jokingly
tweets from a rather freakish person who gives interviews wearing a monkey-hat
and spreading pictures of himself, wearing an orange and unbelievable ugly
combination of skirt and blouse. For others the end of the world was
near.
Clueless Cas always brings me back to The Pizza Man. lol
ReplyDeleteDean saved the coat and I feel sure Misha will be back in some form to reclaim it...PLEASE
ReplyDeleteSO GREAT CASTIEL IS GOD!!!!
ReplyDeleteYes, that is a brilliant idea!
ReplyDeleteit was amazing! thanks to you :)
ReplyDeleteYou're taking it too seriously.
ReplyDeleteI find your entire post to be tasteless, disrespectful, and obnoxious. You clearly know NOTHING about Misha Collins or how he tweets so why don't you go actually learn something before you decide to go rant. This is how Misha always tweets about things, he is a jokester with a sharp wit and unique sense of humor. You throwing a hissy fit over his tweet is just ridiculous. People only know Jack and the LOST character because the show had all the hype and promotion, not because they are memorable or people even like them.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, if you can't even take a joke, then it's sad. Misha did nothing wrong and he said nothing wrong, but it's people like you who are oversensitive to everything that makes it all a big deal.
Ok, you obviously don't know anything about Misha and his humour AT ALL.
ReplyDeletehaha, Misha's tweet made me laugh, love his sense of humour XD
ReplyDeletemisha won everything...
ReplyDeleteit prove that misha is AMAZING....
more than other...
even DAMON salvator..
dont misunderstand coz im your fan 2,,,
but misha always the 1
Hopefully this will send a bit of a message to the SPN writers as to how beloved Cas truly is and treat him better in the future as a character instead of just a plot vehicle
ReplyDeleteWhoa I won :D How do I get the Dvd Boxset now??
ReplyDeleteYay! Castiel wins! :D

ReplyDeletewow ! i kind of agree with the top of the list =}
