What are the 10 most Tivo'ed shows over the past 4 years ?

Sep 2, 2011

TiVo started compiling data in October 2007, so these numbers cover 4 seasons of TV. The live ratings are not included, this is entirely based on the TiVO recordings.

Here's the list :

1 - Grey's Anatomy (seasons 4, 5, 6 and 7).
2 - American Idol (seasons 7, 8, 9 and 10).
3 - Desperate Housewives (seasons 4, 5, 6 and 7).
4 - House (seasons 4, 5, 6 and 7).
5 - Lost (seasons 4, 5 and 6).
6 - CSI (seasons 8, 9, 10 and 11).
7 - 24 (seasons 7 and 8).
8 - Heroes (seasons 2, 3 and 4).
9 - The Office (seasons 4, 5, 6 and 7).
10 - Glee (seasons 1 and 2).

Source : EW.

A few observations :

- 24 managing to be in the top 10 is impressive : first because the show was off the air from May 2007 to January 2009, and also because it ended in May 2010 : 24 made it at the 7th place with only 2 seasons.

- Same for Glee, the numbers of only 2 seasons are enough for it to be #10. Heroes and Lost both have the data of 3 seasons in there, while the other 6 shows all have had the numbers of 4 seasons weighing in this ranking.

- It's no surprise that the series airing in the busiest timeslots are here, especially Mondays at 9pm (Heroes/24) and Thursdays at 9pm (Grey's Anatomy/CSI/The Office).

- FOX is leading with 4 shows among the top 10 (24, House, American Idol, Glee), then it's ABC with 3 shows (Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, Lost), NBC comes next with 2 shows (Heroes, The Office) while CBS ("the most watched network") only has a single show in the top 10 (CSI) — which perhaps means people just don't care if they miss an episode of a CBS (cop)show.

- This top 10 echoes some rankings that have been made on the most downloaded shows, and we can find pretty much the same shows (with cable series such as Dexter making it in the top 10, I recall Smallville was in some of them too). And all these 10 shows were/are (very) strong on the 18-49 demo (except the post-season 1 Heroes, they all gather(ed) at least 3.0% of this key demographic on the first airing). 3 angles and pretty much the same results.

  5. One again I am out of sync with American TV watchers.  I turn off all of these shows when they come on my TV.   One quibble - perhaps CBS doesn't have as many on the list because their viewers make them appointment TV not because people don't care about them.

  6. Huh, at our house it's Supernatural, Vampire Diaries, Smallville, Leverage, and Hawaii Five-O

  7. They also tend to cancel the ones who really have avid fans.  CBS suffered for quite awhile when told the Moonlight fans you aren't strong enough to hurt and went ahead took the show off .  It was holding it's on Friday night.  They tend to do that.  It did hurt them for a while.  That's until they finally decided that Alex O'Loughlin was  a commodity for them.  He brings the fans.  Hawaii Five-O is a hit.

  8. Like Cold Case, which had a very strong fan following. The network put it on a 10pm, plus this network can never understand that putting on the show after the game as run into overtime is the cause of why there is lower ratings.

I still won't watch anything on CBS.

  13. Didn't doesn't matter what I Ti vo because I am over 49 years old.  Wish they would do a study to see what us old folks are watching.  They might be surprised.  I am very willing to be a subject of this study.

  19. The network seriously doesn't care if the fans start petitions. We did for Cold Case and it didn't do any good.

  20. Aw damn! *hits herself* ahhaha. And yes he was perfect

  21. I too was disappointed when CBS cancelled Cold Case.  It was regularly in the top 20 shows.  I'd sit through the end of games I didn't care about just so I would be sure not to miss anything in the Cold Case episode.  It was a pain.  I know Cold Case cost a lot of money (mostly for the music rights), but there was a lot I would have canceled on CBS before this show.

  22. The biggest problem with fan petitions is that they are signed by people who already watch the show.  Therefore, they don't affect future ratings and there is no financial incentive to consider them.  Better bet is to show advertisers that you are grateful for their support of your favorite show.  It's the advertising money that keeps a show on the air.

  26. Man, I'm loving your analyses and summaries of different sets of ratings related data. Keep it up :D!

  27. Yeah, Supernatural took them all on in Changing Channels.  I can not look at David Caruso after that episode.    it was perfection.

  28. Well, hon, I'm 58 and you can look up there and see what I watch.  I do like NCIS but it's not Tivoed.  I watch it when I can or pic up the DVD's on Netflix.  Easier for me.  With my work schedule and having to do online schoolwork at night, it's just easier.
