The Sookie and Alcide scene makes me wonder if it's Debbie that is going to die. The good news is we will all know in a couple of days. Can't wait. Please writers don't make me cry!
Of course Debbie is going to bite it on Sunday. There is no way crazy Debbie back on V is going to do any less than the last time she broke into Sookie's house with the intention to kill her, so leaving alive this time is highly unlikely. I have a feeling Alcide and Sookie are going to be together next season (or possibly a different suitor of the striped and purring variety for those of you acquainted with the books) because Eric and Sookie aren't ready to be together yet and Bill is not a real viable option (no matter what dream Sookie thinks). This girl seems to have too many really tough really handsome choices to make.
It's interesting...I was SO looking forward to Sookie and Eric getting together this season. Then when they did...it just didn't live up to my expectations. The sexual tension was great between the characters but it was too sugary sweet. I didn't feel the heat, the passion. I felt more heat and passion from Bill/Sookie in Season 1. So...I'm kind of over Eric/Sookie. I like the IDEA of them but the way it played out on screen. I was wondering if Alex felt odd because Anna's husband, Stephen, is a coworker and on set. I just got this awkwardness from the sex scenes. (I know that they are professionals but the chemistry wasn't there this season.) Not to belabor the point, but I am fine with Sookie moving on...whether back to Bill or on to Alcide, with a sexually tense relationship with Eric.
as much as i like alcide, i like eric better and i mean the real eric. yes i was happy when sookie/eric got together, but i just wish it was the eric who was mean and full of sex appeal. i hope they show that relationship in season 5 but if they have to go through sookie/alcide first that's fine. i just don't want her with bill and i don't wanna hear any ish about how she is in love with all three of them.
I'll tell you this much - I'm a Sookie/Alcide shipper insofar as it a) keeps her away from Eric and Bill - because they both seem to suffer in proximity to her, but rule when they're away from her - and b) they do seem to suit each other in ways that the vamps and Sookie just don't.
Alcide shares in common with Jason Stackhouse that his presence tends to bring out the better traits in Sookie. Just as I'm frequently charmed by her interactions with her brother, I always enjoy Sookie's scenes with Alcide. On the other hand, I'm often annoyed by Sookie's scenes with Eric or Bill, both of whom should be far too old for this adolescent, myopic puppy love foolishness they seem to get into with Sookie. (I used to like Sookie and Eric interaction when he treated her like an amusing diversion, but I was far from shipping the two of them - and, judging by how they turned out, rightfully so).
Perhaps I might have shipped Sookie with one of the vamps if they actually treated those relationships in a grown-up fashion, but as they're written, they just gross me out. Sookie always seems like a real, relatable person with Alcide, though - very toned down, and more like the season 1 Sookie... So, yeah. If I do have to ship Sookie with someone, it'd be Alcide. You're not alone!
I think Eric and Sookie have great interactions when they're on the lighter side - the two of them flirting, Eric being cocky and insufferable, amused by Sookie and untouched by her indignation, and Sookie huffy, and stamping her feet, and trying not to be charmed, but secretly loving every minute of it. Executed seriously though, their scenes do, as you noted, fall flat - these two characters just aren't meant for heaviness, and that was basically all this season had to offer for them... And all I could think watching said schmoopfest was, "Why so serious?"
That kind of relationship is a Bill and Sookie thing, with her starry-eyed First!Love! and his inherent Drama Queen/Southern Gentleman/Hero Complex deal. But Eric is not a self-loathing vampire seeking redemption through the love of a good woman. And I don't want to see him contorted that way just to fit into what we're supposed to think Sookie's relationships have to look like - I disliked Bill and Sookie because of that dynamic, why do I want to see Bill and Sookie 2.0, Viking Edition?
That's where Eric/Sookie ultimately failed for me. They didn't really explore what a real Eric and Sookie relationship would look like, choosing instead to recycle the most obnoxious parts of the Bill and Sookie melodrama. Worse, they took Eric away to do it, first leaving us with a very cute but ultimately facile pod-Eric, and then returning a watered-down Eric to us, irrevocably changed by his new found devotion to Sookie. Cue the Blah-blah-myopic-I'd-die-for-you-Theme-Music-True-Love-Blah - more of the same.
I never shipped Sookie and Eric, but I wasn't opposed to them - thought it might be fun. But, now I'm very opposed to them and just want them far away from each other. At the end of the day, I feel like I've been through this arc for Sookie already and, more importantly, I really miss Eric.
I agree with everything you said. Sookie isn't ready for real Eric yet anyway, evident by her discomfort even sitting next to him on the couch while Nan spoke to Bill. They need to get their flirty dynamic back and Alcide is a good stepping stone for that. Eric will be jealous and Sookie will be longing. It's perfect and has a Quinn overtone to it for those of you who know the canon plot.
People are disappointed because they set their expectations too high and things were not developed enough. Eric wasn't himself and there was no way to carve a HEA from an amnesiac Viking vampire and a confused time-jumping fairy. I also think they did a poor job developing all of the endearing things (besides sex) that should have coupled up Eric and Sookie appropriately. I know it's different in so many ways, but in the books, there were moments of normalcy between them while he was staying with her- long talks, playful fun while watching Buffy, etc. With that lacking, we are left with an underwhelming romance which needed to be integral to the overall storyline not unconvincing to the audience, cheapening the entire thing.
I think Season 5 will get things to level out a bit more. Maybe Alcide and Sookie do get together and then Alcide finds out that Sookie killed Debbie. We'll see, but either way I still love the show and will appreciate whatever happens tonight as a stepping stone to a hopefully HEA future for Eric and Sookie. I can be patient.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Great stuff, can't wait. Not looking forward to having to wait for season 5 though.
ReplyDeletei think i'm the only shipper for Alcide and Sookie.
