A Tom Fontana/Barry Levinson series on the CW ?

3 Sept 2011

Tom Fontana, the creator of Oz and the upcoming Borgia series, is developing a crime-procedural for the CW with his fellow producer Barry Levinson.

As Deadline reports, Musketeers 3.0 will revolve around 3 outstanding and out-of-control NYPD detectives who see their daily life shaken when a young rookie as good as them is assigned to their team.

It sounds like CBS, it smells like USA Network but it's a potential pilot for the CW. Tom Fontana on this network is quite a surprising move (now, what's next ? David Simon developing a show for ABC Family ?). Good job, Mark Pedowitz.

Pedowitz recently announced he has a few priorities for the CW : developing comedies (there are none on the air on this network) and having more 'repeatable' series (the reruns of the CW's scripted dramas don't perform extremely well). Having a non-serialized copshow would certainly help on that matter and also reaching a broader audience.

  2. Yes, that one put me off, too.

And I have to say it sounds like a whole new era at the CW. I think in some ways I still see the CW as the WB, which (to my not so informed mind) had a rather young target demographic that doesn't work with shows like M3.0. But I'm hopeful that the new direction will work out.

  4. I actually think that this sounds really interesting and I am not a great fan of Cop shows.

The title obviously refers back to tthe original The Three Musketeers who find themselves with the "rookie" D'Artagnan;  this is trying to do a kind of modern version of that story/ idea.

  5. No, the OZ show about a prison full of violence and adult themes on HBO

  6. I like the idea of the CW trying to skew older.  Just from the premise the 3 cops have to be older than the majority of CW actors although I am sure the show will push everything from a younger perspective.  The title can be easily changed and I like that the CW is taking some risks.  Maybe someday it won't be embarrassing to say my favorite show is on the CW.

  7. The new president is working now. In the Ostroff era, the show have been about three fashion models and the rookie...

  8. I agree with you. The CW could continue skewing young audiences, but hopefully targeting males too

  9. I have to say I'm kinda really liking the new CW president and his willingness to breach out the network.
And I also have to say I'm liking the idea for this show of a new age Musketeers. I think that with the right cast and crew behind it (and the producers front seems pretty solid) it could be great!

  10. This is great but....do we really need more comedies.  CW can skip that part.
