Supernatural - Season 7 theories

Sep 12, 2011

The quietness of these boards is killing me, so I decided to start a thread for speculating about season 7. We know a new big bad is coming, but we don’t have much info yet. The season 7 synopsis posted about a week ago said it is “more canny and adaptable than any they've ever fought.” It goes on to say, “as the landscape around them becomes increasingly treacherous, the tools they've come to rely upon will be stripped away.”

So here are some questions to start:

- What form do you think the big bad will take? Someone posted a theory last week that it could come in the form of an illness. I’ve also seen theories that it will be one or many of the souls that Cas has taken in. Any other ideas, or anyone want to expand on these further?

- What do they mean by the landscape becoming increasingly treacherous? Is that literal – actually talking about their physical environment – or do they just mean they’re surrounded by enemies everywhere? Or could it be something like hallucinations? When I first heard a description like that (back in the spring) I guessed that they might get sucked into purgatory. I no longer think that, but it would explain the changing landscape.

- There have been spoilers about them losing their resources, including their former methods for getting cash. So how will they get cash and get around? Forgo the motels and camp in the car? Join the circus? Become exotic dancers? Assume someone else’s identity?

Finally, what are you hoping to see this season?

  1. I hope to be the best of all! Because anxiety is killing me!

  2. I keep coming back to the whole being on the run ans not being able to use the tools they've been used to in the past-credit card scams, stashing the Impala, avoiding their usual haunts ie Bobby's and the one thing that comes to mind is FBI/Cops/some sort of government agency. The fact that the big bad is introduced in episode 2 when Sheriff Mills will be present and according to spoilers heavily involved sort of aids in backing up my theory. The only thing I cant do is link this all to Cas. Unless there are 2 major threats to the boys this season (being on the run from both Cas and FBI) than I'm completely lost as to how anything Cas could have swallowed could pose a threat in the way being described-well unless he took in the soul of some kind of super alien computer monster (and now I'm picturing the monster from Buffy season 1 that went after Willow).

I'm going to stick with my theory of the FBI being the 'big bad' well at least one of them mainly because I think being on the run from the supernatural and a human threat would prove a hefty threat. I don't think Cas or something he swallowed will be interesting enough to carry a whole season-how much will the boys really be able to do? How much and how often will the writers be able to show this threat before it gets old? If the boys are having to fight an attack on two fronts it'll be more interesting for the audience or maybe just me?!

  3. I agree-I hope it is the  best season yet. The promos look fantastic so far and I am very anxious for a new season to get here!

  4. I am going to be perfectly honest.  I really don't have a clue.

  5. That is a secret i would like! I think Jensen would kill an addiction storyline!  But unfortunately I don't know if it would happen as it doesn't involve Sam.
And no, that's not a bash on Sam, just my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I highly doubt it's about addiction...this kinda things never get any story in spn unless it some addiction involve supernatural stuff like Sam's addiction to demon blood. Even about Dean's too much drinking Sera mentioned somewhere that he's a hero, that he's 1,000 times stronger than a regular person. we won't even see him drunk!

    ReplyDelete
  7. I don't think they do addiction for addiction's sake. Rather, something like that would be the trigger to something bigger and supernatural. Sam's addiction was what got him to the place where he released Lucifer. I do think that they've been painting Dean this past season as getting close to hitting rock bottom, and substance abuse is part of that. What hitting rock bottom would trigger, I don't know. My best guess is something related to the natural order.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Sera talked about Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.  The videos and pictures we saw last week showed the filming of the exterior of a bank and that they were robbing it.  It also said someone killed in the robbery.  The sheriff arrests them.  If Sera is serious and boys have no means of support and being hunted by this big bad, they will do whatever is necessary to survive.  It's just a larger crime then what they have done.  We all know people have died because of what they do.  Dean has dealt with the guilt of those they've killed who maybe weren't evil, and the bodies of the demons they have destroyed still having the hosts in them.

Sam is dealing with hallucinations.  Dean is struggling with bringing down Castiel and his worries over Sam.  I read somewhere that Death gets over this and blames Dean.  The normal going from place to place is no longer feasible  in the way it used to be.  Someone in an interview said that driving the Impala would be dangerous because the car is so visible.

I think those are probably the major  things I'm seeing that could change the landscape for them.  Other than Bobby, who do they have they can trust.  Castiel is part of the enemy now .  Balthazar is dead.  Rufus, Ellen, and Jo are dead.  Gabriel is dead.  Nothing works against the new bad, so Bobby can not help them.  They have no one but themselves to rely on, and for Dean, Sam's going in and out of hallucinations and visions and not know what is reality and what is in his mind could be poor back up.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Oh, that is good.  Real good.  I like it.

    ReplyDelete
  10. the things about the landscape and resources is because the enemy they have now can track them if they used it... that is why the enemy is canny and adaptable...

    ReplyDelete
  11. I had been avoiding those posts with the set pictures, figuring I was going to start weaning myself off spoilers, so I didn't know about the bank robbery. That will teach me for posting on a site called spoiler tv. lol. Well, if the robbery is only six episodes in, and they're continuing to have money problems, maybe it's not what it seems, or not sucessful.

  12. Because this show is what it is, it makes it so hard to speculate whats gonna happen. Ever since I started watching the show, I have tried to figure out whats gonna happen next and only on a couple of occasions I have been right. Thats what I love about this show...you can speculate all you want and come up with your own ideas, but they surprise you and go in a direction you never thought was possible

    ReplyDelete
  13. I get why that would cut off their resources, but I keep thinking there's more to the landscape part. Their landscape has been towns and cities throughout the US. I can't remember now how they phrased the first description, but I thought it said the landscape was changing.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Castiel absorbed so many souls from Purgatory, that he absorbed the souls of the Old Ones from Purgatory, so-called "guardians" of the gates of Purgatory that find themselves a way out of Castiel and starts to take form in powerful figures in this world, such as cops, agents, corporation CEOs, and et cetera.  They decide to take over the world with their own rules, but by posing as these powerful figures, they quickly become a step ahead of the hunters and that's how the hunters are slowly decreasing by huge amounts of numbers.

Why do I say the Old Ones?  Jensen Ackles has mentioned that there will be more than one big baddie this season, so I assume that we may be getting a cult of some sort from Purgatory, and the Old Ones fit perfectly in that and trying to take over the world, and are one step ahead from how the demons and Lucifer had thought; they use technology and the like to do such.

The Old Ones could be doing their best in "making" a new Earth in their vision before bringing out their own version of the Anti-Christ; the Cthulhu.

And Castiel?  I suspect with souls leaking and leaving his body/vessel, I could think he may leave for an amount of time to try to "fix" himself; possibly to search for God once more behind the scenes for his own story of redemption?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ooh. I like this theory.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yep exactly.  No just kidding. If I could I truly would say something.  I did read the other ideas.  To be honest, Sam, Dean, and Castiel could stand there for a whole hour and I would be happy.

    ReplyDelete
  17. it will have something to do with cas...i dont wont to see none of them leave the show....cant wait to see season 7 ...

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think some overarching government agency will be after them too and for me, it's about time.  They haven't seen the human consequences of hunting since Hendrickson but they keep leaving their DNA all over crime scenes.  It makes no sense that some one somewhere hasn't connected the dots.

Man, I Robot....You Jane brings back great memories.  Yes, the monster was super cheesy but it was such an interesting premise.  I would love that although there would need to be a bodily threat too.  There's only so long you can run from the big, bad scary computer before things get a bit ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I hope they don't go this route.  The brothers will already have enough on their plate.  I actually am hoping for a bit of the doom and gloom lifting at least periodically.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I would lay bets that the bank robbery is not what it appears to be.  Think of Nightshifter.  I doubt the brothers kill an innocent while robbing a bank.  That would start a spiral of guilt that would never end.

    ReplyDelete
  21. How would it not involve Sam? Anything that involves Dean involves Sam even if just peripherally (like the angel arc in Season 4).

    ReplyDelete
  22. This would be awesome.  I found it strange that in the earliest trailer they cut to a picture on Ben reading the Cthulhu comic.  It always stuck with me.  I don't think they can use this particular monster due to copyright but they could make something very similar.  I always liked it when powerful demons/monsters/whatever take the best that the current world has to offer instead of just sticking doggedly to the past.  It makes more sense to me.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well, the only thing I'm sure of (well,as sure as anyone can ever be with this show) is that the new big bad will come from Purgatory. We've heard on multiple interviews that Cas swallowed some pretty nasty, ancient things.Maybe one of them is strong enough to possess an angel.I still think that the scene we saw in the first promo, where Cas is lying in a pool of blood,is happening in his mind.Maybe something trapped him there..
That could also explain why the can't use old weapons or tricks. If the big bad possesses Cas,it's also safe to assume that he has all his memories. And Cas is like an encyclopedia for the Winchesters. As for money..Well,it's about time someone noticed all these credit cards and fake IDs.Henriksen couldn't be the only good agent in the entire US..!

I don't have a clue about the whole "the landscape becomes increasingly treacherous".I don't even know if we should look into it so much.Let's assume that they don't mean the landscape,as in the trees and roads, because that would be weird.Even metaphorically,I still don't have a clue.I mean it's not like the had so many people to rely on and all of them suddenly turn against them. Two people to rely on.That's it..And one of them has lost his mind.Doesn't leave many possibilities.

I'm really curious about Dean's secret though. My opinion,it has something to do with Cas.

Something a little irrelevant, but still interesting.IMDb has a lot of actors listed up until episode 7.In one episode they have Osiris. Also, they have Misha listed for episode 7.I know the site in not the most reliable source, but most information fits with what we've heard so far.Plus, episode 7 is called "All In The Family",so it's probably something personal.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It would be cool if they've been gathering evidence in the long run for the last few years but have decided to make their move at a certain time...namely Now.

    ReplyDelete
  25. :-)  Love it.  What if the conspiracy theorist found the Winchesters' DNA trail and blogged about it, keeping track of all the shady crime scenes.  Someone in the government takes a closer look and viola, lots of incriminating evidence and power to enforce a country-wide search.

I'd love for a Homeland Security type agency.  I mean someone had to be worried about Grandpa Creepy's militia/cult compound.  No way the government wasn't trying to keep track of who was going in and out of there.

    ReplyDelete
  26. "Henriksen couldn't be the only good agent in the entire US.".!

So very. very true.  If this is the route they are going, I am more excited about than an all-powerful monster.  They've managed escape a lot of "can't be stopped" demons, angels, and monsters.  I'd love to see what they do against a sheer numbers game.  The entire government vs the Winchesters is quite daunting.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I like that theory, that the flashes of bloody Cas we saw in the promo were from within his mind. My bets are on the new bad being from Purgatory too.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm hoping none of them leave the show too. :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. It does seem out of character, but I also can't believe they would do something so close to Nightshifter again. Guess we'll find out soon.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Interesting theory. This gets me so much more psyched for season seven! :D

    ReplyDelete
  31. This seems very plausible to me. Especially the Cthulhu bits. Maybe those Cthulhu references in "Let It Bleed" weren't for nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Although I think the more probable scenario is that the big bad is from Purgatory, one of the thoughts that occurred to me is that it could have been something shaken loose when Cas went down to the cage to rescue Sam. We still have a lot of unanswered questions about that. Why the secrets, Cas? Did something go wrong? Of course this would mean that it's been around for over a year, but that could be explained. It would also tie Sam's Hell memories directly to the season 7 plot.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think Cas will be more like an arrogant man than the EVIL itself! He doesnt care about the boys no longer, like he used to do!! He's just doing what he thinks is righteous and better for the world! Jensen said Dean and Sam will have to "Save The World once more" but I dont think its about the apocalypse, but what about Cas is going to do!! Death is the only scape they've got! The idea around Crowley not being a demon makes you think! But I really dont know what its going to happen on this situation! 2 options in my head: Or he will help the boys at the end, or he still working with Cas on the "backstage"!! Death said on season 5 "At the end, Ill reap God too"!! But i dont think he will kill Castiel!! Im more kinda tend to believe he will become human!! I HOPE!!
Well thats my point of view of Season 7!! In fact I have many thoughts on my head Id like to share but, lets just see what the future (and Sera) holds :)))

    ReplyDelete
  34. Maybe what I should have said was I would like the secret not to be about Sam or revolved around him.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think it was a  set up some kind they were trying to do and it went wrong.  Misha just let cat out of the bag about the big bads.  It'll be interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  36. What I read from Misha on Kristen, it would work.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Newest information says very old big bads, leviathans - I'm crossing my fingers for H.P. Lovecraft's old gods. In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming.

    ReplyDelete
  38.  It's difficult to understand exactly where season 7 is going and that can only be a good thing as it notches up the excitement for the first episode, although I am sure more information will filter  before then.

Based on the fact that Castiel has swallowed the purgatory souls, it could be that one of the most ancient and powerful of them actually takes over Castiel and uses him as a vessel, keeping Castiel's appearance but being  someone else completely.

Having all of Castiel's memories, the being knows all the details about Sam and Dean and so they find it very difficult to move around the USA, use credit cards, motels, the impala etc because the faux-Castiel is uber-powerful.
He could obviously also infiltrate into the police/authorites etc., and activate  those resources  too, against the boys.

The question that comes to my mind is this though,  why would an all-powerful being, more powerful, more worldy-wise, probably more intelligent and much less naive that Castiel was, even bother about Sam and Dean who are, after all, only  puny humans?
Perhaps they have something that the being needs, or are, once more, the key to an unknown mystery,  ( Dean's secret? )

As for Sam, they will, of course have to find some thing that can in some way control his "slipping in and out of various realities," perhaps meditation , or Sam himself who eventually manages to control his mind,  keeping the  other realities at bay.

  39. I've been trying not to put too much stock in the official descriptions of the new villain being the toughest thing the bros have ever faced.  I felt so disappointed by the promised other half of their family lineage (I have forgotten their names.)  The only thing I have been paying any attention to is the idea that they can't depend on their standards of credit card fraud.  Unless there's some spell on playing cards of scamming someone at pool...I don't see how they won't be able to get cash.

I think I'll be happiest if we stay away from Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory.  I know I'm likely in the minority but I'm not thrilled Crowley is back.  (Hopefully, they'll find a fresh way to use the character.)

Wow, that sounds negative.  I don't mean for it to.  I'm really looking forward to the new season.  The only theory I've had is that I keep thinking the big bad is going to be tied into Cass and his new powers.

We'll see.  I am looking forward to it.  Honestly.  :-)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Have you read any of the books?  I picked up one a while ago that expounded on the fact that hunters have cops all over the country...and among them the Winchesters have a good rep.

Your comment reminded me so I hought i'd toss it out there.

    ReplyDelete
  41. What if the problem isn't so much that the guys are hunting but that they're stepping on jurisdictional toes.

    ReplyDelete
  42. My only problem with a Dean addiction story is that they've done an addiction story with Sam and the demon blood.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I would love it too, if  they stayed away from Heaven, Hell and Purgatory and found some more down -to-earth enemies to throw at the boys, but from the bits of news that are released I believe  that, at least in the first episodes, an "all-powerful" monster will still be around.

It seems very difficult, however to invent a monster even more dangerous than the forces of Heaven and Hell combined...........I suppose we'll get to see just how creative the writers can get!

Whatever happens, it looks to be a great season anyway:)

    ReplyDelete
  44. what about if it's the frist the very frist evil on earth like in buffy would be kl

    ReplyDelete
  45. oooh yes. I'm actually pretty thrilled Crowley is back but I'd rather see him as a 'demon', just a demon, than someone who is somehow linked to the heaven & hell storyline. Seriously, I'm done with it.  Supernatural isn't "scary" anymore! And this is what i need. Season 1's Bloddy mary... Maan, I couldnt be in my room at night cus there's mirrors everywhere...

Just hoping Supernatural is really going back to the Monster -of- the- week- episodes.

    I am soooo excited!!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I know that this isn't a prediction but I think that a great episode that would fit into this season would be a Twin Peaks themed Episode... Yes I know Psych did that but wouldn't it be great to see Sam and Dean take down a Bob like demon character?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Leviathans, huh?  I really don't have the imagination I need to be able to visualize this.  lol.

    ReplyDelete
  48. The thread is not just for predictions. Thanks for sharing.  I never saw Twin Peaks so I can't comment on that, but I'm sure we'll be getting more fun parodies of things from pop culture.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I've been wondering too why the new big bad would bother with Sam and Dean.  I hope there's a believable reason.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Here's to hoping that Dean doesn't return to the land of the fairies.  Lot of good theories here.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Thanks! I also hope Dean doesn't return to the fairies, but should the capture Sam Dean would follow no matter what.

    ReplyDelete
  52. doesnt the bank robery happen in the episode SLASH FICTION? If so then I wouldnt neccessarily take it to mean the boys are robbing banks just because they need cash-there could be something else at play here

    ReplyDelete
  53. Wow.  I thought I was the only one who wasn't thrilled that he's back.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I like the idea of it being FBI/law enforcement of some sort. I really like it when the boys are in trouble with the law.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I have to agree... I'll stick with this show no matter what, even if they just stand there!

At least we would have extremely gorgeous men to look at. An hour of staring at the boys for me is better than half the stuff that's on tv right now!

    ReplyDelete
  56. For sure! You never know what to expect! The season six finale sure did shock me...anything could happen...

    ReplyDelete
  57. that is the truth!  You made me feel good that I am not alone.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Don't worry you're not. :) I'm ridiculously obsessed with this show. They've got me as a fan no matter what!

    ReplyDelete
  59. could it be that Cas did bring Sam back from hell without his soul on purpose? I can see how Dean would not tell Sam and how a secret like that could threaten to tear the boys apart-though it is a bit season 2

    ReplyDelete
  60. Yeah, that's what we were saying.  It has to be some kind of set  up they had that went wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  61. No he is not addicted and they already shot this "rumor" down. The instance in question was him handing Sam a small bottle of pills. The fans make molehills into mountains this is what is wrong with SPN Fandom unfortunately.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Sound theory but I am guessing that the battered image of Castiel in the promo was possibly from the "real world" after he has used up the souls and or those ancient beings force their way out of him.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I really like some of your theories. I do not agree on all of them but they are well thought out and concise. I am guessing here but I would say that the way SPN will spin the story is that these beings are more than likely SPN's version of the Leviathan since there are more than one of them.

It was mentioned that Purgatory is not only where the souls of deceased monsters go but also that there are creatures that are naturally native to that realm. Such as Dr. Visyak. I like reading your theories, thank you for your input!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I really hope Castiel doesn't die, I would prefer him to be trapped or something.. idk it would feel like losing sam and dean. It also gives motive to rescue him by killing the "leviathans" or whatever.. maybe he does something good before he goes bye bye. I enjoyed trouble with the law story lines of past seasons its something that they cant kill, also I reckon they will piss off death one way or another. Im also looking forward to things they left open in the previous season, the fairies for one, Crowley, Alphas, Angels.. I wouldn't mind seeing god.. especially a scene with god, death and Castiel ('Ju got some 'splainin to do Cas)

    ReplyDelete
  65. Wouldn't it be great if in their journey to kill the Big bads of this season, at the end they show up and the Big Bads are like "who are you? Why should I care?"

It would make sense to have them hunting in an increasingly darker place as weird things start popping up all over, and the cops are after them, but they are still not even a blip on the radar of the "leviathans."

    ReplyDelete
  66. I don't know where it is going but I read somewhere that Dean has a secret that he doesn't want to share.  I think that secret is addiction to pills.  There were 2 references in last season to him possibly being addicted so...does anyone else think this is the case?

    ReplyDelete
  67. A lot of us don't. It can be fun though to come up with crazy, off-the-wall theories. The good part about knowing nothing is that no one can tell you you're wrong. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  68. A technology link - I like it!  A monster that can control computers?  It could send out bulletins on them to law enforcement, and it would explain why they're introducing a computer genius and conspiracy theorist this season too.
