Unfortunately photo shoots cost money. And the show has a tight budget so reusing what they have available is a way to keep costs down. It sucks for fans cause we don't get new pictures very often but at least they do make some attempt to reuse old material in new and interesting ways and visual forms. Kinda keeps it from getting too stale. Except for that damn snake and halo picture from last year. Please stop using that one because even though I'm not as adverse as most fans to the overt symbolism they used on that photo (i actually liked the snake on Sam's shoulder), what I am against is how over painted and fake those images are made to look. The guys look like they were created in 3D Studio Max not photographed from life.
I actually hate the snake thing. And why does Sam wear red shirts in all the promotional photos? He never wears any red in the show. (And if it's a metaphor for hell or something, then Dean should be wearing white, which he isn't, so...).
It's rather vexing because if you have a gorgeous subject to begin with (as they do with Jared and Jensen and Misha) there's absolutely no reason to go crazy with the airbrush. Airbrush and other post production edits are meant to clean up flaws and things perceived as being "ugly" which certainly shouldn't be a problem with SPN actors (or most of the CW's casts for that matter). Let the beauty of the subject shine. Fix up the levels and any issues caused by the camera or lighting but then leave it alone. I swear when I get hired someplace for this type of thing (I'm a graphic design major) if they try to tell me to airbrush crap making it look like plastic dolls I'm outta there. That's not how I was taught to do things at my $50,000 design school.
Oh but we are gettinh into heavy cultural studies right now. What is the obsession of polish people to leave them with no percieved "flaws" what so ever, even if that means drive into the uncanny valley ala Thelma & Louise.
Really I wanna know, because in every part of the world media keeps doing that and I don't know why, and it kinda drives me crazy. See any magazine and add, everyone is photoshoped outside their humanity.
But it must work somehow, they have to do it for some reason.
PS: And yes, the cast of the CW is almost inhumanly pretty, it's like their "thing". At first I was like "really CW? you try to capture an audience trough mere looks? That's low" But with time I have learn to realize that pretty people can be talented too.
Thanks CW for the lesson in tolerance! And I do say this with no sarcasm what so ever.
I think of it as every recycled photo is the chance to maybe hear some classic rock again. Not ideal but the music wins in my book every time. The only time it is really irksome is when every other CW show gets promoted and Supernatural gets the shaft.
Yep. which makes me wonder if TV Guide is subsidizing the Supernatural promotional budget. If the answer is yes, then they have a fan for life. We're bound to get more and better from TV Guide.
Yeah, they reuse pictures. But I can't honestly bring myself to care with this one. I mean, just look at them! I'm glad they didn't airbrush them... I hate that. There's no need for that. Again, look at them! They're gorgeous! How can you improve that?
TV Guide definitely cares way more than just about any other corporation for Supernatural. I think the fan favorite cover really helped to put things into perspective for them and they realize where the readership is and what a large group of people want to read about. I'm subscribed to EW and I'm constantly disappointed at how little coverage they do for SPN. For example in their Fall TV preview issue a couple weeks ago I flipped straight to the section about Fridays this Fall. Got a nice image collage with Fringe, SPN, and Grimm and that got me excited. Flip the page though and they had a mere snippet on SPN while the other shows got rather a bit more coverage. Then take into account their comic-con issue. I thought with SPN getting hall H this year it would be mentioned. Not a single mention in the magazine about anything Supernatural. Lots of Fringe, TVD, and Chuck though. -_-
If it wasn't for the fact that my EW subscription don't run out for quite a while yet I'd switch to TV Guide.
Photoshop (and other design programs) has given the world of media a means to create visions that would have usually otherwise been impossible before the computer age. And I love the things that these programs can do and help bring artists and designers visions to life. But I just don't understand the concept of turning people into plastic dolls that look fake. I've been taught even if it's unrealistic it still has to register in a person's mind as being possible, real. If it looks too "wrong" people's mind will immediately take note and you may come off the wrong way. So even if you're heavily editing something to achieve a specific vision it's still important to keep in mind what looks attractive to the human eye. Plastic dolls is not one of those things.
I was also disappointed about the Com-Con issue mostly but also the Fall TV preview. The last time that EW got Supernatural right was when they did that short article on how Supernatural's ratings rose in a time when most shows, especially those that were on several years, were falling. That was several years ago. My EW ends around Christmas so unless something improves (and not just about Supernatural but the magazine's focus as a whole), it's adios to them.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Yes CW is lazy and keeps reusing old photos but ya know what if they keep using this one I may find I don't care. :3
ReplyDeleteBut I really wanted to see new material. Curses!

ReplyDeleteGee, CW should really cut down on their promotion expenses...Posting the same pics over and over again must cost a lot.

ReplyDeleteBut the heart wants what the heart wants :D.
ReplyDeleteBut I agree about the abuse of the airbrush, like "drop it, bitch!". TV land really overdoes post production in their ads.
I don't care that they use old pictures...those two are gorgeous :)

ReplyDeleteI really don't care if the pics are reused, airbrushed, or anything. Just to see my three men is enough for me. As always happy grin on my face. :o)

I like it!! :D
ReplyDeleteUh, isn't that photo from the TV Guide shoot?
ReplyDeleteOK, I give in. Even I have to let my inner fangirl sigh at this one. Definitely one for the save column.

ReplyDeleteThe CW has been doing it since its inception. Here was my reaction in season 2:

ReplyDeleteThanks! It is relatively new-ish being from the TV guide shoot and thank g-d that they stopped using the picture of Sam with a snake!
