“Defending Your Life” (TV- 14, LV sptv050769) (HDTV)

DEAN IS PUT ON TRIAL FOR HIS PAST SINS — Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) investigate a string of gruesome murders and discover the Egyptian god Osiris (guest star Faran Tahir) is behind the deaths. The vengeful god is putting people on trial for their past mistakes and killing them if found guilty. Osiris hones in on Dean’s guilt and decides he’s the next to stand trial. Sam steps in as Dean’s lawyer, but both brothers are unprepared when Osiris calls an unexpected witness – Jo (guest star Alona Tal). Robert Singer directed the episode written by Adam Glass (#704).

  1. Sounds fantastic and what a great link to Sam's old wish of becoming a lawyer (way back in S1 he was going to be interviewed for Law School)

  2. Finally! Egyptian Gods! :D

    ReplyDelete
  3. Ah, Sam's the lawyer. That's awesome. I hope Osiris is genuinely frightening, and I hope Dean makes it out ok. :/

    ReplyDelete
  4. That's what I was thinking too. Sounds intriguing to me.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Fantastic! Awesome! Love it! And can't wait! Dean on a trial, Sam as his lawyer and JO! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  6. Is Dean going to be allowed to do anything this year on his own or will Sam always have to save the day.

    ReplyDelete
  7. OMG. LawyerSam - I thought we'll never get to see that, and Dean gets to face and overcome some of his old demons a.k.a. guilt issues. Can't wait. I'm sooooo exited... I might even start humming the song XD

    ReplyDelete
  8. This sounds great - I'll be interested to see what Jo has to say.

And getting an insight into all that guilt about past mistakes should be fascinating.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Where are getting that? I'm assuming that "Jo's testimony" will save the day and not anything directly that Sam will do. The synopsis states that "Jo" is a "Surprise Witness", meaning Sam couldn't "call her" as a witness for the defense because she died.

    ReplyDelete
  10. ^^; that sound a bit weird....I guess we'll see ( I'm wondering if we'll finally know about the Bloody Mary things from S1 :) would be awesome...Eric kept saying how difficult it was to bring that up,maybe that's the time)

  11. Sounds epic. And Alona Tal returns! yay!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Fahran Tahir played the terrorist that held Tony Stark hostage in Iron Man

    ReplyDelete
  13. Sounds awesome. I'm so excited about this season!

    ReplyDelete
  14. LawyerSam for the Win! I suddenly find myself excited for this episode this is excellent news.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Really? That's pretty sweet!! xD I thought he was a little over the top (but then, it's a comic book movie), but I was seriously impressed with his eyes. I mean, I never thought I'd literally *see* someones eyes glitter maliciously. LMAO

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hoping it's as good as it sounds (and that they don't assasinate Jo's character! I want the BaBS and AAH Jo!!!)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Osiris has too much time on his hands.  This must be the sort of thing that happens when old gods lose their worshipers.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Sorry but this just has to be posted

Sam should wear this for Dean's trial!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Sounds really good. It'll be great to see Sam as a lawyer and I'm curious what Jo has to say.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Jo! She always had a fan in me. And Alona Tal is one of the pretiest faces I have ever seen.

    Lawyer Sam! continuity orgasm!

Egiptian Gods! (WIll this Osiris have a wang?)

I have wanted an episode like this for Dean for a while now, the journey to the center of the mind (Deanception? just a tought) But this scenario bodes really well, interesting take on the "reflection of your deeds" theme.

This is going to be awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yep, the episode that is supposed to be Deancentric is now about Sam the lawyer.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I got very excited to see that Sam's gonna be like Dean's lawyer. I missed when Sam had legal aspirations and legal knowledge. I wanna be a lawyer and thats kinda what made me like him right off the bat. It'll def be different to see if any of that comes back. The episode is prob gonna be really emotional for Dean. I'm already ready to cry

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yep, and 7.3, the Sam centric is now about Jensen the director.  They're both in the show.  Sam's not going anywhere. Get over it.

    ReplyDelete
  24. not necessarily, the God may have called her as a witness for the prosecution but Sam can still cross examine her for the defence. The God uses her death against Dean, Sam can use Dean saving her in BUABS to defend Dean. Or something to that affect. Sam could very well be the one who saves the day.

  25. HUGE SPOILERS FROM PREMIER

-Look out for the Impala being used to show the shift in time over the episode
    -Bobby being protective of Sam
-Dean, Cas and Death exchange heated words
-Crowley shows up to join in on the fun
-Sam tries to hide how bad he's really feeling since they have bigger things to worry about
    -Dean noticing Sam acting strange
-the big cliff hanger involves Sam and not Cas as previously assumed

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thank you Chris, for being the voice of reason once again.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Excellent point. Osiris must have had the flu the day Lucifer wiped all the gods out.

    ReplyDelete
  28. That's not the "Barrister Hat" is it?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Read that story too. Interesting note on the Impala. I would think Castiel wouldn't think they would wait anything out.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's funny. All pre season long some were complaining that Dean has nothing else to do than save Sam from peril. It being Sam's plot, since he's in peril with Dean having nothing to do on his own but assist Sam. Now it's the other way around and it's still Sam who get's the plot???? (Am I the only one confused?)

    ReplyDelete
  31. So Sam finally gets to be a lawyer.  Good for him.  I find I have mixed feelings about this episode as it's been written but I have great hopes that Dean will be able to get some of the burdens of hunting off his shoulders and heal a bit.  I hope Sam also gets that opportunity.  They both carry around far more guilt than they deserve.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I've been wondering about them too ever since Hammer of the Gods.  Stargate did Egyptian gods very well.  I can't wait to see how Supernatural handles them.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Bwah!!!  He does sound bored.  Perhaps he should take up underworld golf or perhaps go on vacation in Purgatory.  What is a former god supposed to do with the rest of eternity?

    ReplyDelete
  34. This one has apparently decided to spend his time annoying people who have better things to do.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Okay, I'll try to get over your opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I thought the argument was that Dean would always have to be there to save the day while Sam got "all the attention?" This episode has the problem reversed and somehow it's still not right for you? For ****'s sake, get a damn life.

    ReplyDelete
  37.  How is it reversed?  If Sam's the lawyer doesn't that mean he's the one that up questioning Jo while Dean sits at the witness table and angsts, which seems to be his primary role  How exactly does that make Dean participant and save the day.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Considering the first three episodes revolve around Sam, how is that exciting if your a Dean fan?   I'd like to see Dean save himself.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Since Osiris isn't targeting Sam, does that mean he's not carrying around any guilt?

    ReplyDelete
  40. I wouldn't cut the chance of Dean saving himself out of the picture. We all know how crafty he is when dealing with an entity that thinks itself safe around lesser beings (Eve, for instance).

    ReplyDelete
  41. ...That was my point exactly. Someone posted recently that Dean's only place in the show is to keep up with Sam as Sam gets into trouble, and Dean has to bail him out or save him in the end. It's reversed, because Dean's the one in the hot seat. Also, I'd argue that both of the brothers have a fair amount of angsting between them.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Of course not.  :-)  They wouldn't be Winchesters without it.  Perhaps Osiris did eeny meeny miney moe to decide which Winchester to put on trial.  We all know they both carry more guilt than spoiled sixteen year old shopping for a birthday.  Actually, Dean probably runs into Osiris first and that triggers the whole thing.  Maybe Sam is off researching at the time.  Anyway, I like the idea of Sam as the lawyer better than if Dean had to fill that role.  Plus, we get Jo back which is not a big thing to me but is for a lot of fans.  If Sam was on trial, we would get Jessica again and I feel like we've already had 2 years of Sam's guilt over her.

    ReplyDelete
  43. That's what I meant by Jo's testimony "saving the day (helping Dean)". I'm assuming that Osiris is Judge, Prosecuting Attorney and Jury in one package. I'm trying to think of how Osiris could question Jo to be harmful to Dean. Yes, she has to admit her association with the Winchesters/Team Free Will cost her her life, BUT she gave up her life to save Dean from the hellhounds. That's what Sam can get from her.

Sam can cross examine her to allow her to explain why she was willing to die for Dean and TFW because it was so important to "get a shot at the killing the Devil and saving the world". I think a defense lawyer is permitted to ask a prosecution witness's own motivations that drove their actions.

Dean didn't throw away her life like cannon fodder; it's more than okay for Dean to grieve her death but he shouldn't be consumed with guilt. I'm leaning toward Jo's testimony helping to absolve him of some of the guilt he's weighed down with. I admit that I have no idea how the episode will "play out" but there was an earlier spoiler that read "Dean and Jo will share a tender moment" or something to that effect. It doesn't sound like Jo's angry that Dean got her killed.

We'll see in the episode if there are other witnesses for the prosecution and if the boys are able to "call" their own witnesses or if as lawyer Sam is permitted to serve as Dean's character witness. I don't know if Bobby is going to be in this ep or not (JB said he was "in" 5/6 episodes by this point of filming) ; if Bobby is Sam could "call on him" as a character witness and as having a close connection to the circumstances of Jo's death.

  44. AWESOME! + SAMMY LAWYER!!!!!!!! WiaWSNB love it

    ReplyDelete
  45. lol this debate is so ridiculous though (and yeah i have no idea how to write that word..)
It's like if you ask two deferent spn fans one will say its all about Sam and the other will say its all about Dean. We r crazy love it :P

    ReplyDelete
  46. LOL Dean being Sam lawyer would have been hilarious though :D

    ReplyDelete
  47. First of all, what @Cyana said... I think it will be Jo the one who will save the day and not Sam (unfortunately...)
Second, you Sam haters really don't know what you want (well one thing for sure, for Sam to stop existing at all). You keep complaining about how only Dean cares for Sam and Sam only cares about himself and when we have a hint about Sam helping Dean, we get the "Dean doesn't get to anything on his own" whining from you...Geez...
The show is about two brothers you know! Dean has helped Sam many times, isn't Sam allowed to do the same???

    ReplyDelete
  48. How exactly Sam being Dean's lawyer makes him getting the plot??? You said it yourself, some people wee complaining that all Dean does is saving Sam, now if Sam gets to save Dean you still don't like it??? Like Chris said (not to you, but it also fits), get over it! Dean is one half of the show and Sam is the other!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I know-- I love it when they refer back to something that happened in an earlier season

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yep, it does seem like it will be emotional for Dean and probably also Sam

    ReplyDelete
  51. I had read that there was to be an episode with Dean on trial but it had never occurred to me that they would give Sam the job of being his lawyer!  I love it.

I have always been a fan of those "on trial" eps. in shows, as it usually brings out hitherto unknown things about the person on the stand, so when it happens to my favourite duo, I can't be happier.

Sam is going to get a chance to show off his potential as a once wannabe lawyer, and will probably surprise us, as he did with his famous poker game against Patrick, the witch.

Dean will give us his range of emotions and guilt feelings which I hope he will have managed to feel better about by the end of the episode, when he sees what a good guy he really is!

I wonder if Jo will be the witness for or against, although I don't know what she can accuse Dean of as he has never personally hurt her.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I hope they do better job than in the Hammer of the Gods episode. Kali was pretty awesome but the rest was meh....

    ReplyDelete
  53. Exactly what I meant. Sorry if it didn't come across like this. English isn't my maternal language so sometimes sarcasm might be lost. The rabit fans are always seeing the things they want. If they'd  switch the brother's role in a sypnosys for a try, they'd still not be happy, I guess.  If it were Sam accused and Dean the lawyer, for example.

But then again. It's passion of fans that kept our 'little show that could' on air so long and you can't blame lack of that on those fans, right? I'd just hoped they'd tried to see things from a different side sometimes, (Like pretend to be a fan of the other character and recaping mentally the series)they'd realised that both sides have been neglected and abused in certain aspects of their character. You can show only so much in an hour show with limited budget and a plot that needs to be told as well.

    *kuddos to all*

    ReplyDelete
  54. Oops, sorry! I didn't get the sarcasm, I thought you were just another whiner!
    Sorry!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Dean on trial? Lawyer!Sammy? Excellent! Sounds really good! Jo isn't a big deal for me, I was never wild about her, but I guess I liker her alright, so it'll be pretty cool to see her again.

    ReplyDelete
  56. WOOHOO!!!! Jo returns!!! Always loved her character.

    ReplyDelete
  57. No problem. I'm a Sam girl, BTW. (Even though my curiosity was awaken by Jensen when a friend told my that one of the actors has almost the same last name than me, which is a very rare name around here) But I adore both brothers and their bond is what makes the show what it it. There wouldn't be a bond without one and I regret that some people don't see it that way.

    *hugz*

    ReplyDelete
  58. Lawyer Sammy... sounds really cool! Maybe we'll see his LSAT skills @ work!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Hey, I'm also a Sam girl but also a big bi-bro fan. Just like you said, the brotherly bond is the heart of the show for me!
So the name you have is the your real one??? LOL! I thought you just used it as a Jensen fan!!! Cool!!!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Sound like a great episode, can't wait to see lawyer Sam

    ReplyDelete
  61. Im not a big Jo fan either but you have to admit if you wanted a witness that would help Dean and it couldn't be Sam, Bobby or John who would you pick?

    ReplyDelete
  62. That's a very good point. There really aren't that many options. Jo and Ellen are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head! And Ellen was in My Heart Will Go On...so Jo it is! I just hope they don't shove in moments and try and make Dean and Jo out to be a couple or something...

    ReplyDelete
  63. You are right that they both carry a lot of guilt, I think that Dean's is more prominent, it's something he's had trouble with every season. so maybe Osiris hones on him more because Dean carries his guilt on his sleeve more than Sam ever will.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I agree Jo is the little sister, not a romantic interest... though she might like to be. It's not that I don't like the character I just don't think she fits with Dean.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Maybe he just wasn't VIP enough to get invited to the party? There weren't any egyptian gods there at all of you look at the nametags!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Oh that is sooooooo cool! Thanks for the quick fun fact!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Why Dean's eyes bled when Mary got loose form her mirror is really big in some parts of the fandom. I wrote it off when Dean admitted that he pulled Sam from Stanford because he was lonely and couldn't hunt alone anymore. In Supernatural that makes him just as guilty in Jess's death as Sam considered himself to be!

    ReplyDelete
  68. Guests who are here to bash a brother need to get lost! These boards have rules and people need to learn them or just not post at all.

    ReplyDelete
  69. i just  hate jo and really hope they bring in some other dead witnesses, i mean seriously what about gwen  you know their actual relative and much more recent and honestly do not see how they were so much closer to the harvelles
i so hate if they will ret con this but the wholeseaosn looks great im so happy there is a new season so i shouldn t complain

    ReplyDelete
  70. it's not just the fandom who decided there was something behind, Eric admitted there was a secret behind it but it was really hard to bring it up in the story, the answer was there and waiting for the right moment

    ReplyDelete
  71. mary, gwen, ash,any random victim of the week that died, and maybe not years ago.then again it s just my jo hate clouding my judgement

    ReplyDelete
  72. I think Jo had a thing for Dean, but I don't think Dean returned the feelings, he just thought of her like he would a little sister. They wouldn't work together I don't think anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  73. oh right I did hear about that! I just figured that since she was out of the mirror her powers were more powerful

    ReplyDelete
  74. But we still don't know Dean,s secret^^; The writers couldn't find a logical way to explain it.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Yes.  I'm laughing just thinking about it.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Maybe Osiris was just smart enough not to cross parts with an Upstart like Lucifer?

Some of the old Gods must have done something right, they are still remembered even if some  pretty young religion did their best and tried to wipe them from the collective memories of humanity.
    Didn't work. Hehe.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I can't find the post from last night but to whomever I was discussing Purgatory with:  I stand corrected. I was using the literal version. I re-read the show description and saw I was wrong.  And it makes perfect sense now.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Exactly. And this probably not what you meant, but Sam CAN "call" Dean as an active participant in his defense. I don't know if happen coz  it leaves the defendant open to hard questioning from the "DA" (Osiris?) but with a line of relevant questions, Sam may be able to get Dean to evaluate his actions (that make him feel the guilt that Osiris homed into) in a positive light.

Take for example (I don't know that this will come) Dean's feeling guilty for wiping out all L&B's memories of him; I'm fairly certain Sam can get Dean to say why he did it (answer - to keep them safe - and I know forgetting about Dean wouldn't keep them IRL but SPN is not really DOOL and I think it unlikely that we will see L&B again). I'm sure there are other examples of deeds  Dean's feel guilt about that either he or Sam or Jo can turn into "life affirming actions" rather than feelings of profound guilt.

"Trials" are fairly common in Scifi/Fantasy shows and I cannot think of one trial that resulted in the defendant not being/feeling vindicated.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I tried to figure out the guest list but got nowhere.  For instance, Odin and Loki but no Thor?  Mercury but no Mars, Jupiter, Neptune, etc? Makes for good discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  80. What about Charmed? The only way they got out of it was to go behind the backs of the judges (those huge floating heads lol) through Leo, to find out how Barbas (the Demon of Fear) was able to bring his case up to the authority. It turned out he orchestrated the opening scene to get the Cop friend of the Halliwells to incidentally murder someone and that led to his death sentence and would've been an admissible reason to start the trial against them.

Sorry, I just enjoyed that episode a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  81. LOL, Charmed was an frequent exception to the rules probably because the Charmed Ones had supernatural powers of their own. Perhaps one difference was an enemy to the Halliwells (Barbas) manipulated the events to prove his own case, rather than the "Judges"bringing up the charges" (like Osiris is doing to Dean) themselves because the Charmed Ones  they violated a major good wiccan rule to not intentionally cause harm to an "innocent". IIRC Phoebe was abusing her empath powers  to peak in and see how how her lover and others? really thought about her and that's why she was punished by losing and having her powers back. But Dean has no powers to lose unlike TCO.

There was another trial in the first few seasons I vaguely recall that in that some time "in the future" Phoebe killed a man with her powers and was arrested, tried and sentenced to death for both the killing and using witchcraft. Her sisters led  their separate lives with attendant pressures, but Prue and Piper got together to break Phoebe out of jail. Phoebe decided that what she did was wrong and told her sisters that the needed to let her die to save the future of witchcraft. Phoebe died and was returned the present and they all learned a lesson to not abuse their powers.

So Osiris trying Dean, a normal human, is more comparable to other scifi/fantasy shows in which the defendants are also fully human.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Yeah, you're right about that, I was just pointing out my favorite "trial" episode. Although the other one where Phoebe burns at the stake was literally damn good television.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Very true.  I think part of the problem is that they through them all in with no build up and then killed them off so easily.  I would hope Osiris lives to create havoc another day.  I think Stargate did the best job of getting mythology right of any TV show.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I agree... both were great episodes and the one where Phoebe allowed herself to burned to save future witches. rather than being magic-ed  out was very intense. I used to watch Charmed reruns regularly but now I mostly catch SPN reruns.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I really don't think that the guilt scales lean in either direction. Both brothers have a ton on their shoulders. Lets recap shall we: Sam knew about Jessica's death, Dean took Sam Jessica, Sam has demon blood in him, Dean was told he'd have to kill his brother if he went darkside, Dean sold his soul to bring Sam back, Sam sided with and didn't kill Ruby when Dean told him he should have, Dean broke the first seal and started the apocalypse, Sam drank demon blood, Dean and Sam fought each other resulting in Sam freeing Lucifer by killing Lilith (something that Dean would advocated had he not found out at the last possible moment that killing her would free him), Dean AND Sam got Ellen and Jo a hell of a lot of other people killed, Dean choose freewill instead of the angels which in turn resulted in him having to let Sam say yes to Lucifer in order to stop the apocalypse which resulted in Sam's time in the cage which is affecting him now, and Sam thought he'd redeem himself by jumping in the cage with Lucifer but then he spent a whole year+ as soulless Sam killing innocent victims and generally being a heartless ass to Dean, meanwhile Dean went to Lisa and Ben got them involved in the mess that is his life AND had to wipe their memories of him, then add on that Adam is still in the cage and Dean consciously made the decision to leave the youngest Winchester done there in order to save Sam in his deal with Death.

And all of that, is really only cracking the surface of all the angst and guilt those guys have gone through. And if I didn't keep my examples above even like I intended to, the point of the matter still remains that they both have done a lot to feel guilty over. Dean may have a few more examples but Sam has demon blood and USED his powers and nearly went darkside by choosing Ruby over his brother, his family. And Dean has made mistakes in the name of family (his deal for Sam which sent him to hell, his time with Lisa and Ben, his attempt to get Cas to stop his plan but was too late).
