-Ratings Breakdown:
A night of repeats led CBS to overnight Tuesday victory, but it will not be good enough to win the evening among adults 18-49, which should fall in NBC’s corner. Second overall in the metered markets was ABC, which trailed CBS by just five percent, followed by NBC, The CW and an all encore night on Fox.
In series-premiere news, Sarah Michelle Gellar drama Ringer on The CW was clearly sampled with a 2.5 rating/4 share at 9 p.m. Comparably, that built by 60 percent from the season-premiere of 90210 (#5: 2.5/ 4 at 8 p.m.). It finished fourth in the time period (67 percent above two repeat episodes of Raising Hope on Fox – avg. 1.5/ 2 at 9 p.m.). And it more than doubled the overnight performance of year-ago occupant Life Unexpected (1.2/ 2 on 9/14/10). Another positive worth noting was overnight growth in the second half-hour of four percent (2.4/ 4 to 2.5/ 4). Keeping in mind that Ringer faced America’s Got Talent on NBC (#1 for the evening: 8.8/14), consider this a “winning” start for Ringer.
90210, unfortunately, dipped by 12 percent from the season-premiere of year-ago time period occupant One Tree Hill (1.7/ 3 on 9/14/10), which will be back for its final 13 episodes in midseason.
In season-premiere news, family drama Parenthood on NBC finished third at 10 p.m., with a disappointing 4.6/ 8 in the overnights at 10 p.m. Comparably, that dipped by 18 percent from the year-ago second-season opener (5.6/10 on 9/14/10). Although Parenthood is unlikely to rank last in the hour among adults 18-49, overnight retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of America’s Got Talent (8.8/14) was just 52 percent. Considering Parenthood faced a repeat of NCIS: Los Angeles on CBS (#3: 5.6/ 9), the competitive stakes will be higher next week when all the programming is original.
Earlier in the evening on NBC was the season (or series) finale of game show It’s Worth What? at a third place 3.2/ 5 at 8 p.m.
In the specials department, ABC News: Jacqueline Kennedy: In Her Own Words was on the map with a solid 6.6/11 in the overnights from 9-11 p.m., and the half-hour breakdown as follows:
ABC News: Jacqueline Kennedy: In Her Own Words
9:00 p.m.: 6.2/10 (#2)
9:30 p.m.: 6.5/10 (#2)
10:00 p.m.: 6.9/11 (#1)
10:30 p.m.: 6.7/12 (#1)
Growth out of Wipeout at 8 p.m. (#2: 3.9/ 7) was a significant 69 percent.
Elsewhere, aforementioned CBS filled the evening with repeats of NCIS (#1: 6.8/12) and two episodes of spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles (9 p.m.: #3: 5.6/ 9; 10 p.m.: #2: 5.6/10). And Fox opened with a repeat of Glee (#4: 2.3/ 4), which never plays well in non-originals.
Next Tuesday will feature the series premieres of drama Unforgettable on CBS and sitcom New Girl on Fox; and the season-opening episodes of Body of Proof (ABC), NCIS (CBS), NCIS: Los Angeles (CBS), The Biggest Loser (NBC), Glee (Fox) and Raising Hope (ABC). The start of the new TV season is now just five days away!
