Questions that Beg to be Answered: Hopes for Fringe Season 4
by Kelly Kelemen for TV.com
Unfortunately, like JJ Abram's LOST, there are far too many unresolved questions on Fringe and too few answers. Despite this constant frustration, Fringe endures to be the best existing serial mystery on television, whether you like sci-fi or not. It also has one of the most loyal fan bases around, without which, the show would have been canned with other development dumps Arrested Development, Futurama, Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Firefly, to name a few. If it weren't for DVR figures, the plug would have been pulled possibly after its ratings dive in season 2. Now the show dwells on FOX Friday nights, also known as Where Shows Go to Die. If season four can somehow spark a ratings boost and force the network to put it back in a better timeslot while simultaneously picking up steam as far as plot development, perhaps a fifth season is in order. But for now, let's assume upcoming season four will be it.
So with Fringe's impending doom imminent, it's only fitting to take a look at some of the shows most compelling mysteries that beg to be answered. Like in LOST, we know far too many events have been set in motion to get answers for all of them. It is silly to expect a clear-cut answer for each. But I think most fans would agree as long as the big ones are answered, they'll be happy with the show as a whole when all is said and done. We can't examine and speculate on every single one, so here are my top five.
5. Is there a specific person or entity causing The Pattern of events, and if so, what is the ultimate purpose?
Ok, so this is quite a loaded question. Within it are dozens upon dozens of sub-mysteries so-to-speak. In fact, almost every episode has had a pattern-related mystery. This is perhaps the greatest question regarding the show as a whole. It is the first grand question we were ever really presented with. All of the strange events in the show seem to connect in one way or another. Agent Broyles mused, "The Pattern is as if someone out there is experimenting, only the whole world is a lab." So the question remains - why is there a pattern? Is one single person or entity behind it, and if so, what is the ultimate purpose? One could argue it is a means to set events in motion that lead to the desired and ultimately favorable outcome for those affected by it. Sort of like a Final Destination scenario - things beyond our control happening that lead people to their destinies. As far as who or what, it could be The Observers. It could be an alternate version of one of our main characters in a yet un-introduced universe. The simplest explanation is that it is all an overarching scheme to make things the way they are supposed to be between worlds. Nevertheless, there are an awful lot of subplots to look back at in Seasons 1-3 to determine what they all have to do with where we are now.
4. How powerful is Olivia and what is the drug Cortexiphan all about?
It is clear that Cortexiphan can give its lab rats - in this case Olivia Dunham - unique abilities of the mind. Olivia has diffused a bomb, broken down force fields and traveled between universes. Walter has helped her harness her powers, but it seems she has only scratched the surface. Perhaps one of these patients is responsible for The Pattern. But the bigger question is, how powerful is Olivia? How much brainpower and telekinetic ability does she possess? When will she realize the full potential that lives dormant within? It's no doubt Olivia is a special, integral individual and at the center of a lot of freaky stuff. It should be noted that William Bell first administered the drug in 1981 before "the event" of Peter's abduction in 1985. So Cortexiphan wasn't a result, but rather a preparation for things to come implemented by Bellie. I think it's pretty clear that Olivia is above and beyond the others hence her coming to the Fringe Division. I think Olivia's mind will wind up being the most powerful thing of all in the show - it will unite the world, it will bring back Peter and it will solve The Pattern. In the Season 3 finale, we got a glimpse of Olivia unable to use the powers of her mind favorably to protect her, hinting that limitation and opening up the mind will be a strong theme in Season 4.
3. What is the Boom Boom Machine and who is its creator?
Is it a result of the so-called First People? Why is Peter so in tune with it? Perhaps Peter created it with his own mind. Or perhaps it is not a machine at all, but we merely perceive it as such with our minds and it is all Peter's brainpower. This leads us to another question - who is Peter really? Could he be one of the First People somehow? An Observer in disguise? Or is it all part of William Bell's creation? It could very be that Bell created the device specifically for Peter somehow knowing that it would ultimately wind up falling into Peter's fate. So then perhaps Bell is behind more than we think. With every question comes another several questions and possibilities. Frustrating, isn't it?
2. Who are the Observers and why do they appear when they do?
They've been sighted at some of history's most significant events. They've also shown up at an awful lot of these Pattern events. So what is their ultimate purpose in this universe? In both universes? Are they from some alternate dimension sent to oversee that the blue and red universes keep from destroying each other to maintain balance in the cosmos as a whole? Or are they somehow pulling the strings to make sure everything falls apart? I think it is very well possible that the Observers are more of an enemy than a friendly overseer. It is possible they report to a greater entity. Without calling them aliens, it is very well plausible that they are from another universe secretly setting events in motion leading to the destruction of the worlds we know so theirs will reign supreme. Perhaps they were the puppet masters leading to Peter's abduction that set everything we know into motion. They don't age like us and they certainly don't like seasoning like us. So they must be from some other world, right? One thing is clear - they aren't just meaningless in this whole operation. The producers promise to reveal more about them in Season 4.
1. Where in the world is Peter Bishop?
At the end of season three, Peter vanished after the two worlds seemingly merged with no one acknowledging his existence. So did Peter never really exist? Or is he stuck somewhere between worlds? In another universe? Just how many universes exist? How many timelines? Joshua Jackson is still under contract, so we know Peter will be back, but in what capacity? I am sure Walter and Olivia will have their subconscious invaded by Peter - just unsure of who he is. There are two worlds and only one Peter so how does his effect on the device uniting the two sides affect his fate? Did he know this would happen to him? The Observers say Peter served his purpose, so what exactly was it? How can anyone serve a purpose if they never existed? This goes back to #2 - perhaps Peter is a pawn at the hands of the minions that are The Observers. Peter is definitely not a figment of imagination and he most certainly has seen the future and has some important people to warn. Peter must exist in some timeline, one that doesn't directly affect the memories of our central characters. Perhaps Peter was catapulted back in time, perhaps he exists in a separate future timeline, or maybe it is an answer we haven't even begun to conceptualize yet. I suspect some more portals are going to be opened, some in space, some in the mind, in order to bring Peter back to the "present" - whatever that means, anymore.
Feel free to give your own top 5 or speculate what might happen in Season 4. As for me, it's ibuprofen time - I have a headache.

I kinda thought the Pattern was answered at the end of S1 when Olivia realises they all lead to a soft spot to another universe. (I can't remember all the details) So I think Walternate is possibly responsible for this in someway.
ReplyDeleteI think in the end for the world to be saved they will have to form a third proper universe (lots of fans always speculate a Yellow verse).
The main question I have is who is Sam Weiss? I am not buying his story at the end of S3 he seems suspect to me.
A lot of these questions have been answered for some time. The Pattern was indeed done to create a soft enough spot in reality in order to cross between dimensions. Also it was revealed at the end of Season 3 that the First People were actually Walter, Olivia, etc and in the future, Walter had created the machine then sent the pieces back far into the past for them to be discovered at the appropriate time. Thirdly, we saw glimpses of Olivia's true power in the season finale.
ReplyDeleteOddly Questions 3-5 have either been answered on some level already....
ReplyDeleteQ1 and Q2 are big ones..... but of course we all know they will answer Q1 so for me that one is not an issue. We will find out where Peter is in the first quarter of the season.
Q2 is the ongoing mind**** that we will not get answers to until we near the series finale I fear.
Agreed about Sam WEiss.
ReplyDeleteThe explanation we got was too vague and convenient for me.... but welcome to FRINGE I know.....
I disagree with a lot of thing in this article. First, unlike Lost, Fringe has given answers as it has made more questions. Second, I don't feel frustrated by the lack of answers, this is a essential part of the show to keep it interesting. I also think most of this questions that were made aren't the more important to the show currently. For example, I think the Pattern was answered in season 1 as well the purpose of Cortexiphan (creating super soldiers to protect our world), although the producers have already said at Comic Con that in season 4 we'll learn more about Olivia's powers. About Doomsday Machine, part of the answers were given at the end of season 3, we hope they could give us more this season. Also it's well known that season 4 will have an arc about the Observers and we should learn more about them, but I think it's remain one of the greatest mysteries of the show today. Peter's whereabouts should be the first answer that we'll have in season 4.
ReplyDeleteI also wonder about Sam's real identity. I don't believe that is it or it was the worst plot development in the show.
ReplyDeleteVote for Fringe at SpikeTV.com for a Scream Award!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with this. The whole time I'm thinking "speak for yourself"...I'm not frustrated...I'm intrigued by the fair amount of questions being posed as well as answered.
ReplyDeleteFringe answers questions... just not as fast as some viewers want.
ReplyDeleteThat is more that viewer's problem and not the series. I agree. They really answer things fairly fast... albeit sometimes vaguely at first, but they usually provide a more detailed answer as various pieces connect to one another. To me that is great storytelling and TV. They shouldn't need to spell everything out for the viewers immediately. Part of the greatness of Fringe is that it makes the viewer think, analyze and rethink their theories... For me that is the brilliance and charm of FRINGE.
Peter was the bridge to link the two universes so they could coexist. They are no longer tearing each other apart. Now the problem is both Universes have to work together to prevent another ripping from happening.
ReplyDelete-Where is Peter Bishop and who will he be ? is the main question
ReplyDelete-What are the Observers ? We don't know where they come from but we know what they want.
-Will we know more about Nina Sharp, Astrid and Lincoln Lee (our Lincoln Lee and over there Lincoln) ?
-Does Nina Sharp have her own doppleganger in the other universe, what about Peter?
Fringe does give much more answers than Lost and characters are much more interesting!
the answer to q.3 is so lame...
ReplyDeleteWe already knOw the answer tO #3. Re-watch the seasON finale. The answers are there.
ReplyDeleteI don't the Pattern as anything at this point. To me it's just people who want to experiment. I believe some are related to the mythology but others could just be scientists trying stuff out. There's 6 billion people in this world. You cant honestly say not one of them wants to do this stuff and take things to the next level. It's like murders. Random people do it everyday but there is no greater connection between them all (except serial killers).
ReplyDeleteA DEMON'S TWIST RUSTS
ReplyDeleteWow, all the agree to disagrees. I am still upset reading this is possibly the last season. Don't want that!
ReplyDelete- Why AltBrandon was wanting to study Olivia's body ? is Olivia re-engineering body ?
ReplyDelete- Walter said to August : make the girl important , did Walter create Peter and did Bell create Olivia ?
- Nina sharp still we know nothing about her ... she is a mother for one character but who ?
- September said : there are so many future and he can say it all but not sure which one will pass , we saw one future in the day we died ... how possibly that Peter served his purpose and yet there is so many future still happening ? is that mean Peter is only in one future ?
Total agreee!!!!!
ReplyDelete♥
*To me most of the questions here are already answered....
ReplyDelete&
Where the Hell is Peter? I thought he was important?
Serious: my question is the following {a part who never got explained} what and who created those glass discs oa John Scott and a view others were "carrying" and what was there purpose???
♥
The only thing i agree on in this article is that Fronge's 4th is likely/probably its last seeason, i really don't see a season 5 and if it gets a season 5 it will a wrap up 13 episodes one or maybe they keep it a live so it reaches the 100 eps line which is great fort syndication
ReplyDeleteunfortunately this is likely last season
ReplyDeleteSoft Spots that were compounded on by more events around them. Each event made the soft spot weaker and weaker. I believe the other side (Walternate) was behind the pattern. There thinking process being that more weak spots would be the end of our world and the continuation of theirs.
ReplyDeleteTrue. I don`t know who the hell wrote these questions? Has he/she even watched the show?
ReplyDeleteI'm kinda over all the 'reporters' (sarcasm) that keep saying this is the 'last' season for the show. I'm convinced that if the network announced that the show was picked up for another 5 seasons the same people would still deny it and say the network is wrong. Just enjoy the show and keep watching so it stays on for years to come. Stop putting such negative vibes out there already.
ReplyDeleteI have to disagree with a lots of this. I think Q3-5 I been at the very least partially answered.
ReplyDeleteQ1.The pattern was a series of events, that was the rest of the soft spot that was originally one was caused by Walter crossover into the other universe to get Peter and also be Walternate and his agent causing more soft spots.
Q2. Bell and Walter know of the other universe and I think started the Cortexiphan trails was way to cross into the other side (1981), but than Walter child become ill and dieds(1985) and he taken Peter from the other side and he means to bring Peter back. Than the Cortexiphan trail taken on the new meaning, and Walter start to push the Olivia. As for how powerful Olivia is be get idea of that in the season finale.
Q3.We got a lots to answer on this in season finale and season 3 in generally. The first people appear to be Walter in the future.
Q1 Will no doubt be answer in the first half/first quarter of this season 4?
Q2 We will get more answer on the observers, but will not be fully explain until the end of the series.
Personally I dont think Fringe is like lost, I think we get lots of answer to our question, yes sometime the lead of more question but I think the over story an characters are much better the lost. But I never did like Lost.
Totally agree about Sam Weiss, not buying the story either
ReplyDeleteSame here
ReplyDeleteYeah, most of these have been answered. The Pattern is a result of the tearing of the universe that Walter made when he took Peter, and we saw in the finale that Olivia eventually develops telekenetic powers. We were also told pretty conclusively who the first people are and how the machine came to be. This guy really didn't do his research. It's like he stopped watching in the middle of season 3, but managed to hear of Peter's disappearance, and has the nerve to compare Fringe's meager amount of loose ends to those of Lost.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I'm concerned, the only loose ends they need to tie up are what happened to Peter (which will be answered this season) and who or what the Observers are (which I don't mind them delaying on for another season or two, because it's a fun mystery).
awwww man that sucks!
ReplyDelete"Thanks to KELLY Kelemen from TV.COM for this guest article."
ReplyDeleteI would like to add :
ReplyDeletewhy on earth Walter said in s3ep20 Peter's blood is A+ and then in s3ep22 in the future they were giving him O+ ?
Oddly Questions 3-5 have either been answered on some level already....
Disagree. FRINGE is like watching Lost from the perspective of the DI...
ReplyDeletewe get scientific explainations/theories for everything, because their job is to figure everything out...often the fringe epsides explain things, even how the Observers could be created and/or how they could exist (Shapeshifters, Milo, child Observer, ect)
We may never see an original timeline but the pattern and/or equation provides this idea that a timeline can manifest into new timelines and that the red and blue's commonuity may show us this and thus the idea is that alternate realities are being created and therefor pieces of previous realities repeat in some way (course correction) like a prodominant strand of DNA....so you have to pick out what stays the same, even after this reset, in order to come to our own conclusions of origins, but i think it's clear that time traveling terrorists via corrupt individuals whom worked on behalf of the governement are the initial cause as ZFT (and what ever went on with john Mosley) and End of Dayers parallel each other and the 2026 possible temporary time-period shows us how at least the blue universe came to be (J.J. Abrams Star Trek) by taking people and what would be preceived as advanced tech and time travel with those things in a time where they didn't exist (and this is why the reset happens to aviod this outcome from repeating yet again)....but additionally thinking about Peck and concepts layed out with White Tulip (memory resets) --who know how many times these realities have been altered and if all of these soft spots are not all Walter's fault, but rather in the original timeline, corrupt terrorists and so those soft spots, and other events, will keep appearing in a similar way in every alteration until the law of averages kicks in (there are a few Caprica and BSG references as well to support time/reality traveling terrorists) along with some timeline re-arranging (shapeshifter = change shape =change identity = change outcome)
I think the Observers think they can disregard Peter, but I think they are mistaken and I can only think that Peter is going to have to go on a journey to prove he might have been 'created' via Observers and/or an original Walter as why to save life (Frankenstein = life extension), but he is a person too and wants his life back in some way...they didn't take into account his love for Olivia, Walter, and Astrid...for his own life.
In short I think we don't need many answers except "what outcome do the Observers want?" and how will Peter get his life back...we don't need to know too much about the past, just that we can save the future...
I disagree with a lot of thing in this article. First, unlike Lost, Fringe has given answers as it has made more questions. Second, I don't feel frustrated by the lack of answers, this is a essential part of the show to keep it interesting. Peter's whereabouts should be the first answer that we'll have in season 4.
ReplyDeletei don;t agree with a proper universe, as it has already been stated by the creators/writers that there are already an abundance of universes. i think it would just be impossible to meld 2 universes completely. they would all die. i think they have a link and now the trick is how to work together to put their own worlds back together. just my opinion though.
ReplyDeletei do agree there has to be more to Sam, and I also thought the pattern question had already been answered.
