Hey all,
Just to let you know we've added a couple of little new features to the comments system that we use here at SpoilerTV.
Notifications
The first new feature is that of Notifications that allow you to see easily when someone has replied to you.
At the top of the comments box there is a new little box. In the screenshot on the left it shows 0. If you had a notification it would show how many and would be Red
If you click this it will display a dropdown of the recent activity that you can monitor.
Comment Badges and Reputation
The 2nd feature is that of "Reputation" for commentators. Next to a persons name you might need a little button/badge which shows their level/reputation. Moving your mouse over the button will reveal their comment "points" and rank.
Points are gained for things such as commenting, the number of replies your comments etc, the number of "likes" your comments get. There are several different buttons available which you can see depending on the user.
Note: These points are different to our standard Badgeville points and are just used to rank commentators. Also note that some of these values may change as we tweak and improve the rankings.
We hope you enjoy these little additions and we'll be adding to these over time. If you have any problems/comments and/or questions please don't hesitate in asking below.

ReplyDeleteI love this little button. :D
ReplyDeleteThe nofications are awesome as well.
Cool new features!
ReplyDeleteoh awesome :) sounds great!
ReplyDeleteI 'like'.
ReplyDeleteThanks for always trying to improve the site. You all work so very hard to make this a special place. :)
Thanks, that's very kind :)
ReplyDeleteRanked 5th... impressive! any ideas who's first? I guess Dahne...
ReplyDeleteWe don't currently know. The system is still going through the 170,000+ comments on the system and calculating :)
ReplyDeleteI think it said Dahne is #2...which baffles me.
ReplyDeleteNice feature. I usually don't connect with twitter or facebook and dont get any badgeville points :( Now, I don't feel left out. ;) :P
ReplyDeleteOh, nice. I wonder if there's a way to change with which service to connect. I made this twitter to comment here, but it has connecting problems all the time.
ReplyDeleteI like the notifications box. Even though all replies get sent to my e-mail via Disqus, I sometimes don't check my e-mail that frequently.
ReplyDeleteNever boring and always evolving.... that's SpoilerTV.
The best way is to create a free Disqus Account and then connect your Twitter account to it so that your existing comments are kept
ReplyDeleteyou guys have been busy behind the scenes. These updates are great! Thanks so much for all your hard work
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. Especially love the notification system.
ReplyDeleteGlad you like them ;)
ReplyDeletelove these updatess! im always interested to see if someone responded to my comments and now this is an easy way to check! thankss!
ReplyDeleteGlad you like it :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Ryan, glad you find it useful
ReplyDeleteThis is really cool especially the notifications. I really used to dislike having to remember which pages I'd commented on and go back and look through to see if I'd gotten any responses or not. And usually I won't even check unless I figured my comment might stir up someone enough to respond to me. So being able to tell when there's responses is great. I'll probably contribute more because of it.
ReplyDeleteThat's Awesome Kayleigh, that's exactly why we thought it would be useful ;)
ReplyDeleteOk, I think I got it. Thanks a lot.
ReplyDeleteFunny thing, I had a Disquis account that I didn't remember of XD
Ha lol :)
ReplyDeleteThis is really awesome! You guys have been doing an awesome job :)
ReplyDeleteMaybe one day I'll be in the Top 100 and have a button next to my name too xD
Ha, thanks Tania :)
ReplyDeleteWoooo hoooo I am liking this! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI really like these, Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteYay cool new update :D!
ReplyDeleteI'm interested to know how the system calculates stuff! Also, really great update. One of my favourites in recent weeks. I usually get notified by e-mail, but it will be nice to have an on site updating system.
ReplyDeleteNaw, Dahne is actually in 4th now :O. Things seem to be updating, but I'm not quite sure how. You are now 12th and Dark himself is only 6th. I too am curious as to who might be in positions 1-4. I'm 20th, Darqumode is 23rd, Wilson is 8th, and even Bruce_F is only 5th.
ReplyDeleteJust call me Debbie Downer. I love, love the notification thing. Sometimes it's hard to know what comments people have replied to so you can reply in a timely fashion. I think this will definitely help have more productive conversations on the site and that's one of the things I love best about it.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I do not like the comment badges and reputation thing. I think Badgeville has done a disservice to the discussion here and I wish that commenting would not be worth points. It has lead to a rash of people saying "thanks" and "can't wait" just to get points toward badges. I love to see comments on a thread I am interested in because I'm excited to join the conversation. To then get a whole page of comments that aren't really comments dampens my enthusiasm for the site, especially if it has taken a while for the page to load. Since the comments do not add to page hits and therefore revenue for the site, I would be happy if comments were left out of the rewards and recognitions as a whole because I think that leads to much better TV discussions. Plus, I already know that I comment far too often. No need for a glaring "Please shut up" badge :-P
Thanks for the honest feedback Dahne, much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteWe're constantly looking at the things you have mentioned to try and tweak and improve the experience here at SpoilerTV for everyone.
Just to let you know the "Disqus" bagde/points are based on more than just leaving a comment. They are based on a whole heap of things such as does your comment get a reply, are people "liking" your comment, the length/quality of a comment.
It's very new for use so we're looking at tweaking the algorithm to better surface the key contributors in terms of comments.
Appreciate the feedback.
Nice one! :)
ReplyDeleteAhhhh Cool, cool, cool, cool!
ReplyDeleteCool, it'll be hard to crack any of the top lists.
ReplyDeleteHard yes, impossible no :)
ReplyDeleteSome great points. I definitely agree with regards to a rash of new commenters, but I think that it has been a pleasant "reward" for those of us who tend to have interesting things to say anyway. Other than that, sometimes, I feel a little overwhelmed (like, if I don't comment, I'm wasting my time, which kind of isn't the point).
ReplyDeleteI feel like whenever I respond to someone now it should be in "The Prisoner" style. Number 2...
ReplyDeleteReally like the idea of the notification, should really help the comment section, not sure what I think of the Comment Badges and Reputation thing to be honest,
ReplyDeleteVery cool features. Although I too was a little put off by the raft of short dull comments coming just to score points. Now that I know that points get awarded for quality of comment and whether it gets a reply I will pay more attention to the good comments especially when I post an article. Thanks DarkUFO!
ReplyDeleteCool, glad you like it.
ReplyDeleteYep, quality comments and those with replies get a lot more valued in our internal calculations.
1 Good comments with lots of replies and likes is worth more than 100 "Looks Great" comments :)
Cadence
ReplyDeleteBasically we look at a number of factors such as comment quality, number of comments, number of replies you make, number of replies your comments get, number of likes your comments get. Each of these a factored with different weightings to give your a "score". This score is then placed into a table and users ranked etc.
Silly me-- should have read through the comments because I didn't fully understand the ranking. Yeah, I think that there should be a ranking for really excellent comments. Sometimes, there are fantastic discussions going on :)
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to let you know that I just got a notification for a reply to one of my comments from over a year ago. :) It was mildly entertaining, but I'd think you'd want to know that happened!
ReplyDeleteHa, awesome :) Hopefully we'll get some of the kinks out :)
ReplyDeleteJust noticed the points for comments and I like it because I use my facebook to log in and don't get any badges/points through that.
ReplyDeleteThanks, although you could create a free twitter account that you just use for us here at SpoilerTV
