SPY COMEDY INSECURITY RETURNS TO CBC TELEVISION WITH NEW SEASON, NEW DIRECTION, NEW TIME SLOT
Season Premiere airs Monday, October 3 at 8:30 p.m. (9 p.m. NT) immediately following BATTLE OF THE BLADES; New Spy Training Game and online videos launch as well
The nation’s most unconventional secret agents are back, as INSECURITY returns to CBC Television in a new time slot, Monday nights at 8:30 p.m. (9 p.m. NT), beginning October 3. The CBC original comedy now follows Monday night results shows for the mega-hit BATTLE OF THE BLADES.
Set in Ottawa, at the fictional National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), Season 2 of INSECURITY follows secret agent Alex Cranston, played by series star Natalie Lisinska (TOTAL RECALL, YOUNG PEOPLE F**KING, CHLOE), and her team of spies as they juggle dates, terrorists, pets, ex-boyfriends and the safety of the nation. The only thing harder than protecting the country is protecting themselves from their own insecurity. The 10-episode half-hour series was shot in Regina this summer, with second unit photography shot in Ottawa.
Along with the new time slot, INSECURITY takes a new direction in Season 2, evolving from an action comedy into a classic sitcom.
“Season 1 was a parody of the procedural and spy genre,” says creator and executive producer Kevin White. “It was a send up of series like CSI and 24. The focus was on the plot – the mission – getting the bad guy and saving the day. This season, we flipped the pyramid and focused on the characters and their relationships. Season 2 is more of a classic workplace comedy, where the funny lies in the characters, their relationships and how their lives are complicated because they’re spies.’”
Starring alongside Lisinska are: Emmy-nominee William deVry (THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, ALL MY CHILDREN) as NISA’s politically-savvy director Peter McNeil; multiple Genie and Gemini Award-winner Rémy Girard (INCENDIES, LES BOYS, LES INVASIONS BARBARES, LE DÉCLIN DE L’EMPIRE AMÉRICAIN, JÉSUS DE MONTRÉAL) as the veteran agent on the team Claude Lesage; Matthew MacFadzean (OWNING MAHOWNY, THE BIG HEIST) as the loyal team player Burt Wilson; Grace Lynn Kung, recently nominated for a Gemini for her role on INSECURITY (BEING ERICA, AWAY FROM HER), as the forensic specialist JoJo Kwan; and Richard Yearwood (THE PLAN) as unpredictable agent Benjamin N’udu.
In the Season 2 premiere on October 3, Claude comes to the office in a retro 70s get-up a la STARSKY AND HUTCH and the team makes a few digs at his expense. Harmless private jokes become international news when NISA is WikiLeaked. Alex scrambles to repair the personal damage with Claude. Meanwhile, Burt’s dealing with relationship problems of his own after a lie detector test threatens to reveal his secret office affair.
Also launching in conjunction with the broadcast premiere of INSECURITY on October 3 is the NISA Spy Training online game and contest. Designed around the six key characters in the series, aspiring NISA agents (and fans) can test their powers of observation, reflexes, memory and hand eye co-ordination. Top scores will be posted to the INSECURITY website and Facebook page. Top scorers will have an opportunity to win a MacBook Air. The contest closes October 15.
Also new for Season 2 and launching with the broadcast premiere of INSECURITY is a series of 10 NISA training videos available exclusively online. The videos, to be released weekly throughout the season, feature the INSECURITY characters offering advice to NISA recruits. Tips include stakeout etiquette, psychological support, undercover strategies and more. See them online at www.cbc.ca/insecurity.
Season 1 of INSECURITY premiered to over 800,000 viewers on January 4, 2011. It was one of the most-watched premieres of any scripted Canadian comedy series on CBC last season was nominated for 2 Gemini Awards. The Season 1 DVD will be released in November.
