How I Met Your Mother - Season 7 - Katie Holmes cast as Slutty Pumpkin

Katie Holmes is a Slutty Pumpkin. Or, to be precise, Vulture has learned exclusively that Mrs. Cruise has agreed to play a promiscuous Jack-O-Lantern next month on a special Halloween episode of How I Met Your Mother. In case you're not up to speed on your HIMYM lore, the Slutty Pumpkin is a character first referenced early on during the show's freshman season — a potential love interest Ted met at a Halloween party one year but then lost touch with.

Earlier this month, creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays revealed to us that the character would finally be unmasked this season but couldn't yet say who would be playing the part. Now that said pumpkin has been found, Thomas is psyched: "Katie is a lovely and talented actress, which is why we've saved for her perhaps the most classily named character in our show’s history," he says, adding that the role was "literally six seasons in the making."

  1. Oh, come on, really? They are wasting Slutty Pumpkin on Tom Cruise's Stepford Wife?

  2. At least she's cute. She should be decent enough, even if I wished Joey Potter to die a slow, agonizing death.

Yes, I know the literal and obvious reference is to the slutty pumpkin, but I can't help but think it's a veiled reference to the titular mother, too. That's also been six seasons in the making, and if they simply pass her off as the slutty pumpkin, the audience gets to connect with her a little before they drop the bombshell later on that she was also in Ted's wrong class on his first teaching day, that she left an umbrella, etc, making her the mother.

I just can't see them introducing the mother in the final episode and be able to have the audience connect on any level whatsoever, which'd make the finale seem somewhat empty, y'know?

But this way, it could totally work.

  5. In fact, I could see them bringing loads of old exes back into the mix in the finale, and promoing the event with "Which one turns out to be the mother?" (the second to last ep could end with Ted saying something like "I've told mostly the truth to you kids, but I did lie outright over one thing - none of the names of who I hooked up with, except Robin, are their real names. One of them turned out to be your mother...", rendering the whole "The kids would know their mother's name, duhhh!" issue moot and totally sounds like something Old Ted would do to screw with his kids a little), but it'd be nice if it WAS the slutty pumpkin that had the rest of the history tied up with Ted, too.

  7. Ok I'm disappointed that Katie is going to be the slutty pumpkin.  This makes me worried about how I will react if I don't like the casting choice for the mother.

  8. You have a point there: slutty pumpkin could be the mother. And, darn, based on her looks she could be the mother (brunette, blue eyes). And it would make sense for the show to try to get someone that generates even more publicity.

I was just hoping the mother was someone with charisma and personality like Victoria, which was a very likeable character even while keeping Ted and Robin apart (and the actress who played the part has that certain je ne sais quoi).

Katie Holmes just seems like a bland and blah fembot and the fact that she was on Dawson' Creek just grants her some extra annoyance points.

I am really rooting that she ends up not being the mother and that it is just a manoeuver to keep the fans guessing.

  11. Oh, I just read this:

"TVLINE | You guys are also bringing back the slutty pumpkin girl. That’s in the works, as well, yeah. There’s a thematic undercurrent that’s been slowly emerging on this season about exploring our past and exploring our history. … [The characters are] all in a place where they’re ready to be grown-ups now, but there’s just so much baggage that they’re carrying around. We’re going to see some faces from the past. Victoria’s one of them. The Slutty Pumpkin [is another]. There may be more down the road. It’s [Ted] exorcising some of his demons."

So, the girls from Ted's past are coming back in order for him to get over them or of the "what could have been" element. After reading this, I asume that Slutty Pumpkin is not the mother. YAY. No Katie Holmes as the mother!

  12. I suppose this is okay.  She definitely wouldn't be my first choice though.
