Outtakes Online: Wahine fans cheer for ‘Five-0′

Too bad there isn’t an Emmy for extras because the University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball fans may just be the loudest, most enthusiastic extras on television.

When “Hawaii Five-0” asked them to stick around Saturday night so camera crews could shoot them cheering for a fictional volleyball match, none of the show’s executive producers were quite sure how many would stay.

Then, everyone stayed. An entire sell-out crowd of 10,000 fans stayed in their seats at the Stan Sheriff Center so they could cheer while a fictional UH-Manoa team played against another fictional team called Rio Rancho State College.

In fact, the fans cheered harder than they did during the Wahine’s thrilling victory over Pepperdine University.

“The crowd was absolutely phenomenal,” said Steve Boyum, one of the show’s executive producers and the honcho whose favorite words are definitely “one more time.”

“I’ve done movies and television around the world and I’ve never seen anything like this,” Boyum said. “These guys were fabulous and they were all here. They stayed for us. Tonight was beyond the call of duty and they should be proud.”

None of the show’s stars were involved in the shooting, but series regular and UH sports fan Daniel Dae Kim was in the stands with his family. He threw “Five-0” T-shirts to the crowd during breaks in the real volleyball match, which the Wahine won. He’s got a pretty good arm, too.

“Thank you for being here,” Kim told the crowd during the real match. “Please hang around because I want to see each and every one of you on ‘Hawaii Five-0.’”

One of the two primary camera operators working hard was former UH men’s volleyball star Torry Tukuafu, who criss-crossed the arena during the fictional match with a Stedicam strapped to his body.

“These people were so into it,” Tukuafu said after filming was completed. “We didn’t expect this many people to show up. It made the shots that much more real.”

Tukuafu, who played for UH from 1998-2001, said the energy in the arena reminded him of big games.

“For me, it was cool to feel that energy again,” he said.

No shots of active UH players are allowed, per NCAA rules, but everyone else was fair game. (Perhaps even hard-working reporters at the press table?)

During the match with Pepperdine, Tukuafu and fellow “Five-0” cameraman Mark Gerasimenko, shot the crowd, the university pep bands as it played the show’s famous theme and fans, as they waved signs, ti leaves and generally hammed it up.

“Five-0” will be allowed to use the university’s name and its “H” logo. Even the uniforms on the fictional team were real, although they were last used in 2009. The volleyball match was the second of three separate “Five-0” episodes that will feature the university. Earlier this month, the show shot at the school’s Snug Harbor and on Monday it will be at the medical school.

“This will bring millions of dollars in positive exposure for the University of Hawaii on the national and international level,” said Tracy Orillo-Donovan, who serves as the university’s broadcast media manager. “Five-0” and the university first began talking about this relationship in April, she said.

The scenes will be used in an episode about a volleyball coach who gets murdered but the victim won’t be Wahine head coach Dave Shoji, who was among those who stayed to watch the filming of former players, including Aneli Cubi-Otineru, Sarah Mason and Kanoe Kamanao, who played for Rio Rancho.

During his match, Shoji tried not to think about the presence of a film crew but watching afterward was a unique experience, he said. The sell-out crowd was larger than a typical Wahine match and the coach said the extra lung-power in the seats was a boost.

“I just appreciate them coming out to see us play,” Shoji said. “I think it helped us play better.”

The storyline and air date are fluid but the episode is currently slated to air Oct. 17.

The second season of “Five-0” will start Monday at 9 p.m. on KGMB.
