Deadline reports that Bryan Fuller (creator of Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls & Pushing Daisies) and Michael Hirst (creator of The Tudors & Camelot, producer of The Borgias and writer of the Elizabeth & Elizabeth - The Golden Age movies) are developing new series for french film studio Gaumont via Gaumont International Television, a new studio they recently created based in Los Angeles and aiming to produce and sell dramas and comedies to international markets.
- Bryan Fuller is developing Hannibal, a new series (I assume it's a drama) focusing on the early life of Dr. Hannibal Lector, and his patient, Will Graham, an FBI criminal profiler haunted by his ability to empathize with serial killers.
So far, there have been 5 adaptations of Thomas Harris' novels : Manhunter in 1986 (directed by Michael Mann, Brian Cox played Hannibal), The Silence of the Lambs in 1991 (directed by Jonathan Demme, Anthony Hopkins played Hannibal), Hannibal in 2001 (directed by Ridley Scott, Anthony Hopkins reprised his Oscar-winning role), Red Dragon in 2002 (directed by Brett Ratner, Hopkins once again plays Hannibal in this prequel adaptating the Harris novel also used for the screenplay of Manhunters) and Hannibal Rising in 2007 (directed by Peter Webber, Gaspard Ulliel starred as a young Hannibal in this prequel of the prequel Red Dragon).
- Michael Hirst is developing Madame Tussaud, a 6-episode miniseries following the life of Marie Tussaud, a swiss artist, known for her wax sculptures who worked for the king Louis XVI. She escaped guillotine by working for the revolutionnaries to help them make death masks of the royalists and royal figures (and sometimes old friends) such as Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Her masks were held by the people parading in the streets.
Bottom line : there will be blood.

ReplyDeleteI am actually really interested in this...I love the book series, and I was disapponted with the film adaptation of "Hannibal Rising" (which features the young Hannibal Lecter)---It was such a good book --so much pain and such details---because he lived wealthy educated in a Castle until the country became war torn...and the isolation and loss of his sister really did him...I hope they use the material from the book and maybe T. Harris can work with them!???

This could be good, but so much has been done about Lecter already. They would need to keep it fresh without losing the fans of the previous material too. Might be difficult.
So much of his stuff deals with death, but it's usually a lighter humorous twist on death. This would be a darker side... I hope.

ReplyDeleteThe Madame Tussaud mini-series sounds more interesting to me honestly. It could really show me a new side of an historical figure and era. Original projects always pique my interest.
