Cougar Town cocreator Bill Lawrence has news for fans of the ABC comedy: “Those that loved the title…. [It's] not around for much longer.”

Lawrence floated that likelihood on Twitter Thursday night, reigniting a dialogue that has dogged the show since Episode 1.

UPDATE: More pragmatically, Lawrence says that ABC research shows there are a “high number of men that will NEVER sample show called [Cougar Town], even those that liked it once they screened an epsiode.” Also problematic is the “incredibly high rate of fans who will not/or can’t get friends to watch due to the title.”

These days, Lawrence seems to be entertaining Sunshine State (previously off-the-table, because Mr. Sunshine aired on ABC), Friends With Beverages and The Drinking Age as possible titles. Use this poll to throw your weight behind any of the oft-mentioned candidates, or propose one of your own.

    I feel like they should have done this last year, if it gets people watching though then I'm fine with the change because its a fun show that needs more love

    i dont understand why the need to change, i know it is not wat the show is about but, changing the name required almost a reboot .. reinvention etc... wats the point at this stage??... change the name kill the show :(

    I agree, it feels too late in the game to change it. Obviously the name hurt the show to some degree but I can't see that changing it for season 3 will do much good -- then again, they're likely doing a lot of research, so who knows.

    I like friends with beberages, but it kinda sounds like it is "friends: with beberages"

    I'm fine with CT, and can't beleive that there are those so closed minded because of a title even though there are plenty of good reviews of the show.... but how about "The show formerly known as CT"?... lol , or Cruisin for a boozin, or "Don't whine to me, just wine me", or Booze bags.... lol

    how so? do u think if they change the name, it will help ratings?
    TV viewer: whats this new show (turns to watch) ..oh its just Cougar Town with a different name.  Yea still not gonna watch.  

    I dont see how changing the name makes a difference.

    Friends Without Boundaries, Friends with Beverages, Sunshine State, The Drinking Age... blah. Jules Rules, Winers, With Friends Like This..., The People You Know.. slightly better but still blah.

    I still am not a huge of of any of the aforementioned titles I guess....As much as Cougar Town may throw some people off. if a name keeps a person away from checking out a series how much of a fan would that person be anyway? It's just silly to avoid a show because of a name.All I know is that if they do not change it this year I NEVER want to hear talk of changing it again! PERIOD. Season 2 was the time to do it... this every year debate is annoying and tiresome. Move on already.

    its not the title of a show its the premise of the show thats needed to draw my attention and no matter what the show's titled it wont effect my enjoyment of the concept enough to get me to watch a show i wasnt already planning to watch

    Hey guys, we have a pretty successful show, people are watching, and we are 3 years in. Gee, how can we keep this popular. Add a really funny story arch? Hmm, no. Add cool guest stars? Nope. Oh, I got it...Let's change the title........No confusion there.
