You’ve no doubt read here about the showdown looming in Season 3 of NBC’s Community, between Dean Pelton (played by Jim Rash) and Vice Dean Laybourne, the imperious head of Greendale’s apparently renowned air conditioning repair school. But perhaps no one sums up the gents’ adversarial dynamic better than incoming guest star John Goodman himself.
“He’s got [the dean's] privates in a vice,” Goodman shared during a Wednesday conference call. “Dean Pelton was feeling his oats, and now he’s having his oats fed to him.”
If Laybourne — whom Goodman touts as “an unseen, unknown force” — starts bearing down too hard on Pelton, might the chrome-domed, freshly goateed dean find himself backed up by the unluckiest of allies, in Jeff Winger?
“That’s a good question, because Jeff is always pretty wigged out by Dean Pelton,” Joel McHale told us. “In every scene, if you watch, the Dean finds a way to touch Jeff…. But my guess is that at some point he will be forced to help the dean.”
“I haven’t seen that yet in the scripts,” McHale points out, “because all of the stuff John has been doing thus far is setting up the Darth Vader-like empire that is the air conditioning repair school. My guess is it’s going to get really hairy in a couple episodes.”
The light at the end of the tunnel for Dean Pelton: Goodman says that at this point he is locked in for only six episodes of the NBC comedy — “unless they can get rid of me more cheaply!”
