The 2011 STV Character Competition - R2 - Day 18 - Jack Shephard (LOST) vs Castiel (Supernatural) & Chuck Bartowski (Chuck) vs. Kate Beckett (Castle)

Sep 21, 2011

Hey Guys,

Yesterday once again demonstrated the strength that The Vampire Diaries has on STV by having Katherine Pierce defeat Benjamin Linus of LOST in a result that suggest the Vampire's may have something to say in this competition before it ends. Also, Peter Bishop of Fringe enjoyed a comfortable win over Meredith Grey of Grey's Anatomy, but has a tougher test next time around.

Today sees last years victor Jack Shephard challenging Castiel of Supernatural in a poll that is likely to test the reigning champion's resolve to the limit against a secondary character from Supernatural who has won over a large amount of the shows large online fan-base. Also Chuck Bartowski of the popular Chuck challenges Castle's joint lead Kate Beckett for the place in round three. It's a tough day, let the voting begin!

Currently leading the prediction competition is Dahne, who has jumped ahead of Todd German & Sergey into first place following a 100% start to round two. To see your score head HERE

For anyone new to the competition the rules are simple. Every day there will be a new set of polls between characters who are bidding to become the winner of the second STV Character Competition.

All you have to do is to vote for whichever characters are your favourite and at the end of the 24 hours whichever character has more votes will be the winner and will progress into the next round. There are three rounds before the quarter finals, semi finals and then the final...

Don't forget to tweet, facebook, google+ and spread the word about the characters and shows you love to try and boost your chances of winning.

All that is left to say, is let the battles commence...

  1. An easy day for me, Jack & Chuck.

Jack is just brilliant, I'd vote for him over every other character in the competition. What a character, what a story arc!

Chuck is great fun, great acting by Levi as well...

    ReplyDelete
  2. Voted for Jack and Kate ! just like old times in Lost he hehe

    ReplyDelete
  3. Cas and Chuck for me.  Can take or leave Kate Beckett, but loath Jack completely :P

    ReplyDelete
  4. Easy today. Jack and chuck.

Jack Shepherd and Chuck Bartowski are 2 of the better characters of the decade on 2 of the most original series of the decade.

I like Castle, but I don't think of Beckett as groundbreaking or even all that original honestly.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Dang that the first one was really downright hard for me to pick.  The second one easy.  I knew Jack would win but I had to pick Castiel.  I knew Kate would win but I had to go w/my heart!  Chuck was my pic.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Jack is awesome and Beckett is better than Bartowski.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I voted for Jack and Chuck, though I am pretty sure the supernatural guy will win as always. I really tried watching supernatural (because of all the hype around the rabid fans), but found it incredibly annoying (sorry, fans) and Lost is one of the best series of all times, so I really wanted Jack Shephard to win.

Chosing between Chuck and Beckett was really hard. I am loving Castle right now and Chuck hasn't been that good in a while, but I really love the character Chuck Bartwowski and was really invested in the show for a long time, so go Chuck!

  8. wow it is a tough battle between Castiel and Jack-- I'm surprised that Jack has taken the lead so far

    ReplyDelete
  9. In the 3 seasons of Lost I've seen Jack was definitely one of the best characters.Unfortunately, that's still not enough...Castiel will always be my choice!
But I know that it's gonna be a long day!

Chuck in the second one,I guess.I kinda grew tired of the show a couple of years ago,but the character was fun and I really like Zachary Levi.

  10. I chose Cas 'cause, you know, he's God now and all...Don't wanna get smitten.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Really? Beckett is in the lead?

    ReplyDelete
  12. My vote goes to Jack Shephard and to Lost.

I got a such a lot of enjoyment from the show, the characters were appealing and you cared what happened to them.
Jack became a capable leader and the fact of being a doctor added to his people skills and  protective attitude. He was true to himself right to the end, something that Castiel was not.

I only ever watched the pilot episode of Castle and the mother/daughter thing put me off and I have never watched Chuck as I'm not a fan of  mixed action/comedy shows

  13. Castiel and Beckett for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

  14. I voted for Castiel, of course, and Chuck.

    ReplyDelete
  15. God help us if the Supernatural boys ever have to face each other...

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh God, this is hard. How am I supposed to choose between any of them?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Cas all the way! I really enjoyed Lost, and although Jack wasn't my favourite character (that spot is filled by Charlie for me) I would have voted for him over most of the other characters in this competition. But Supernatural is my favourite show and I love Castiel so he gets my vote :D

Also voted for Beckett as I watch Castle but I've never seen Chuck.

    ReplyDelete
  18. If Dean and Sam both win their Round 2 polls then they will face each other in Round 3 :(

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well,I'm not exactly sure how it works but I think that if both Sam and Dean win tomorrow they'll face each other. And that would be a good time for the world to end...  :p

    ReplyDelete
  20. Jack SHOULD win, but if he has to lose, I'm glad it's Castiel that took him out.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Jack and Chuck. Love Cas, but Lost is Lost.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Just Jack today. Not my favorite Lost character, but I find that most of the Lost cast is better than pretty much any other show.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Easy - Castiel and Kate Beckett.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't think it is as clear who will win as you think.  This is a tough round for all characters.  My guess though is that Castiel and Chuck will win.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Jack and Chuck for me...two of my favourite characters...unfortunately neither of them will go to the next round.

    ReplyDelete
  26. easy today
as much as i loved lost, i hated jack. and this is not the best show competition (even though i would still never vote for lost over supernatural) and i love castiel so a very easy vote for my castiel - although i'm now realising that not picking cas in my bracket in round one is going to make my bracket suffer greatly :(

second poll, i voted chuck. i've never seen castle and i've seen the first few of chuck and he seemed pretty cool so yeah. not a very complex point. lol

    ReplyDelete
  27. Never followed any of the shows except for Supernatural. So my only vote goes to Castiel.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Jack and Chuck. Jack is one of the best developed character in all of TV history. Castiel is pretty compelling too, but doesn't hold a candle to Jack. Chuck is a fun show and Zachary Levi is excellent.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Castiel (though I had a problem since I've always liked Jack very much) and Chuck

    ReplyDelete
  30. I voted Castiel and Chuck. I don't think I could ever vote against Castiel, especially seeing as I have convinced myself that he is dying in 702.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Jack (live together, die alone) Shepard & Kate

    ReplyDelete
  32. In the first poll I went with Castiel as I have not watch Lost. In the second poll I went with Chuck for my bracket but I don't thing he going to win it

    ReplyDelete
  33. My only vote goes to Castiel! <33

    ReplyDelete
  34. Castiel of course and Beckett for me ;)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Cas definitely wins over Jack for me! One of the most awesome ever-changing character arcs ever written, nothing even Jack can compare to 'cause he sure as hell wasn't an angel who was a soldier then broke the rules to rebel for humanity, lost his family, his home, his powers to become near mortal, fight against an apocalypse and died again, and then spent another year trying to stop an angelic civil war only to loose himself to the darkness, take in souls from purgatory, severe his ties to Earth and become a God-like figure! Talk about one heck of an arc for just one little angel to take in just about three seasons of a show! That's more arcs that Jack (as much as I love him and Lost) will ever have!

And my other vote goes to Chuck, gotta vote for a fellow nerd!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Jack and Chuck. Sorry Kate but Mr. Bartowski owns my heart.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I had just about the same reaction.  Jack was probably my favorite character on Lost, but I hadn't imagined that I would be voting against Cas.  *whispers - I voted for Jack*

On the second one I voted for Chuck.  Both are great characters, but Chuck is more fun.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Castiel all the way. I'm not sure what the show is planning to do with his character this season but I have faith in Ben Edlund if not the rest of them and hopefully he will protect our dorky angel.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Castiel has a strong lead right now.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Wow all the SPN fans are out in force, 1500 plus, interesting next round when Sam and Dean are up against each other

    ReplyDelete
  41. Pitting two of my future husbands against each other? Cruel.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I've never seen either of the shows for the second poll, so I didn't vote, but the choice for me for the first one was obvious.Cas, of course. I love Supernatural, even if he isn't my favorite character from it.

Oh man, what am I going to do if Sam and Dean go against each other? Who will I choose?

    ReplyDelete
  43. The boys are going against each other? Oh man... I wonder which will win...

    ReplyDelete
  44. I was a huge Lost fan in the early three years of the show, loved it, but then the plot became so convoluted that I just got really lost, missing one episode was like missing a huge chunk, it was just too much, as much as I still adore the characters, the show was just too confusing and no longer satisfying for me anymore. Supernatural was always a decent show to me, never that rabid until the character of Castiel stepped into the show for me, it's why my vote is with Castiel, because I've never fallen in love with a character more, because he was the angel who gave up everything to fight for humanity, bled and died for humanity, and there is something so intriguing in seeing an angel struggle in the journey to learn about freedom and free-will. Supernatural is a show often dismissed for being a simple genre show on teen network, it's not big production or big named like Lost, but quite frankly, I find it just as fascinating and strong as Lost ever was, and the writers and cast especially deserves more credit than the show has ever been given.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I actually don't find Jack or Chuck or Beckett (all great characters) to be terribly original. Jack and Beckett, I could find plenty of characters like them, build from the same mold, and for Chuck, it was more of a rehash of Jake 2.0, the idea is not very original. Quite honestly, SPN's portrayal of angels was probably one of the most original things I've seen in this decade and longer, media has so long portrayed angels as cute little chubby babies or kind guardians like Touched By An Angel that it's great to see SPN take the same old concept and turn it into something different, that angels are warriors, they aren't hand-holding saints, that they will smite towns and crumble cities just to enact God's orders.

    ReplyDelete
  46. In first I voted Jack. Although he is not my favorite charater in Lost, at the end he earned it.
The second was the tougher pool that I've had in this entire competition. Without no pain, my vote was to Kate.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Maybe fans will refuse to vote and it will be a tie hehe

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ha, I wish. That would be awesome. I hope one of them wins (it better not be Castiel!) I'm sure that, even if a character from SPN doesn't win the entire competition there will be at least one in the finals. :P

    ReplyDelete
  49. Thank you for taking your time and explaining one of the reasons for the fan's fascination with supernatural and this character. It is just not my genre of show... too "fantastic" for my taste because of the angels-demons-creatures theme (I also can't watch anything with vampires, werewolves, etc).

(Well, it surely lies on my taste for TV shows and not on the quality of the show itself:
**Love(d): Seinfeld, Friends, HIMYM, Lost, Pushing Daisies, Castle, Chuck, Curb your Enthusiasm, The Larry Sanders Show, Arrested Development, 30 Rock, Community, The Office (UK & US), Lost, Monty Python's Flying Circus (YAY), Firefly, Freaks and Geeks, Modern Family, Doctor Who, Monk, Psych, TBBT, The Avengers (Emma Peel years)
**Hate(d): 90210, Melrose Place, Dawson's Creek, The OC, anything with non realistic creatures, Buffy, Angel, Charmed, Felicity, Married with Children ,Primeval, My so Called Life, Glee (!!!), Gossip Girl.)

  50. As a huge LOSTie, still voting for Castiel. Though I fear for his character in s7...

    ReplyDelete
  51. I voted for Cas - I've enjoyed his oblivious, naive inadvertent humor. (even though I'm not a fan of the angel storyline) Now I'm looking forward to seeing the would be god Cas.

In the second poll I voted for Kate. I enjoy female characters who are strong without being ballbreakers, and funny without the use of put downs.

    ReplyDelete
  52. They're all part of the SPN family, so it's all good.  If a character who isn't one of the leads wins, it doesn't change anything about the show.  It just means the character has something lovable about him.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Oh, I know that. I wouldn't mind too much if Cas did win. I'd be glad that an SPN character won. I would just prefer it to be one of the Winchesters, since they're my favorites. X3

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'm not even sure who I want to win yet.  My opinion changes daily.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I don't think that Chuck is a rehash of Jake 2.0, as he doesn't have superpowers or "communicates" with machines. That's just a fallacy: "Jake was somehow enhanced by technology. Chuck was somehow enhanced by technology. Ergo, they are basically the same."  Well, so was the six million dollar man.
And from your description, the castiel character is nothing more than what the bible says angels are...not original at all from that point of view since the bible has been around for a long long time.
If one wants one can always find some other character to compare and say it's not original - we are in 2011... pretty much everything has already been written somehow.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Mine does too. But finals aren't here yet, so there's time to decide, I guess. And you never know which character will advance or lose.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I like Jake 2.0 and I see some similarity to Chuck, but the concept is still different to me. The series overall is very original in mt eyes. Even if I think Chuck the agent is similar to Jake 2.0 ( which I only agree on up to a limited point) Chuck is far different than other spy agents I have seen. .. and I love spy genre series or movies..

Jack I do agree with you on partly. He is pretty much the average protaganist stereotype, but the show he was on was anything but stereotypical or average. LOST was one of the most original series ever on TV and Jack was one of its best characters.

Don;t agree about Supernatural though. MANY movies have had angels as warrior types... often feuding with one another and/or God like on SPN.  Constantine, Dogma, Legion, The Prophecy I, II and III, The Seventh Sign to name a few off the top of my head. I usually avoid "angel" movies since I tend to not enjoy them so there could be many more for all I know.. Supernatural put their twist on it to make their own, but the concept has been around for decades in media ... if not centuries...

My not voting for Castiel was more about not liking Supernatural as much since the angels were introduced. I think Cas has lasted way too long and the angel plots have been too drawn out... with more to come.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Easy day for me, even though it looks like my characters won't advance - Jack & Chuck.

The amount of Supernatural fans voting on here is ridiculous :p  I'm a huge fan of all 4 shows and my favorite characters from those for are:

    Lost - Jack Shephard
    Supernatural - Dean Winchester
    Chuck - Chuck Bartowski
    Castle - Richard Castle

So yeah, Jack over Cas & Chuck over Beckett.  Now if it was Jack vs. Dean or Chuck vs. Castle, that would be hard.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Well if there is one thing SPN fans know how to do is rally together votes in record time, after all, we wouldn't have won the last few competitions for Best Romantic Couple (Dean/Cas) and Best Show (SPN) or the TV Guide Fan Fave Cover without that support. :)

    ReplyDelete
  60. And quite honestly, I was not expecting Cas to gain such a huge lead over Jack considering Jack was last year's reigning champion, I was actually expecting that Jack would win or it'd be really tight and Cas would give it a good run, but it would seem that even despite the storyline change for Cas in Season 7, the character still has not lost momentum in fan love, one of the reasons he won TV Guide's Favorite Non-Human Character I suppose. :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. This Supernatural fan voted for Jack & Chuck, too. Not all SPN fans are Cas fans, not that your post suggested that they are.

    ReplyDelete
  62. But we are talking about originality in TV, as much as I love Chuck and the show and have been a fan since its first episode, it doesn't mean I look at Chuck and think it's the most original character or show. And as I clearly mentioned with Castiel, the originality comes not from whatever stuff in the Bible (or more accurately the book of revelations), but rather on TV, there hasn't been any serious portrayals of angels. Yes movies have done angels and end of world battles, but on TV, angels have been given mostly the whole Touched By An Angel routine, when was the last time a show explored an angel rebelling against his family, against Heaven to stop the apocalypse, lose his powers, and then having to figure out how to stop an angelic civil war and learn freedom and free-will? Those are not things that TV these days take the time to cover or write about, and that is why I see it as different and original.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Oh, Chuck vs. Castle would have been a cruel decision to make...

    ReplyDelete
  64. We are talking about TV once again, not movies, and as I said, I find SPN's portrayal still more original despite angel warrior type movies because I have not seen another show tackle the angel issue the way SPN has, nor an angelic civil war due to an absent God, or what happens when an angel loses his way in trying to do the right thing and end up becoming a God-like figure himself. Sure maybe the concepts are there for centuries, but when did anyone on TV last done something like it and be able to introduce each angel as characters in their own right and watch them journey through this.

    ReplyDelete
  65. It's okay, you like Doctor Who, we can be best friends then! LOL! ;)

Whovians gotta stick together right? Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I agree with DarqueMode (below). I can see that you are really passionate about the show, but I really don't understand why Chuck wouldn't be original (and I can be very critic towards the show). The guy downloaded a computer program on his brain... I really don't seem to find anything exactly like it and I am just referring to one of the character's characteristics.
And if using an very precise character idea from a book is being original, then all the first adaptations from a book for TV are suddenly super original, which I don't think is really the case.
Lost was original not because it had never been done on TV before. It was original because something like it had never been done before that way. Period.
Curb your enthusiasm is original, just as Seinfeld was original.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Hahaha! I like to see time as a big ball of wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff too!! :) Oh, how I would love to have my own TARDIS!

    ReplyDelete
  68. We are talking about TV characters but with the media cross-over the lines between television and movies themes (and originality) are too blurred to ignore one or the other. Who thinks of Firefly separately from Serenity? The X-Files is the series and its movies together.... not just one or the other. Movies spawn series and series spawn movies. For me the cross-over is too big to ignore thematically.

I agree that Supernatural made it a bit different with personal tweaks... like  I wrote before. Having seen a few of the movies I listed, I never felt the angel arc was overly original since the civil war thing is covered in more than a couple of them. However the characters are unique to Supernatural. Well some of them, Archangel Michael and others turn up in every angel series or movie.

Moreover in relation to Cas specifically, his story is only unique because he is an angel. Many series have dealt with "good guys" trying to achieve a benevolent goal by doing bad things and being corrupted by power along the way. So again it's a spin on a very old story... not a new story.

That is not to say it is not entertaining or good (for most people) because it's been done before. I don't like it for the theme in general, not because I've seen it before. That's a personal thing. You and many others may love the angel storylines and Castiel too... that's good. For me his introduction was the beginning of the backslide of Supernatural.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Not to start an argument here, but Jack also stalked his ex-wife, had a temper, became addicted to pills and alcohol and was verbally abusive to Kate when he was high, and shot John in cold blood (he didn't know the gun wasn't loaded).  Jack had a dark side too.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Got to be Cas!! He is the coolest, hottest Angel ever.. and the story arc was such an awesome addition to the best show ever on TV. Chuck is too cute to be denied. As for Jack and Beckett, while I like the shows, neither character has me to invested.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I'd agree with the comment that Jack was the average protaganist stereotype if Jack was a stable, dependable doctor, but angry, controlling Jack, or crazy Jack trying to set off a hydrogen bomb on the island in an act of faith, was far from that.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I voted the same way and I seem to be on the losing end of both matches.

    ReplyDelete
  73. The two "most voted" polls tomorrow are going to be Castiel vs. Malcolm Reynolds and Castiel vs. Jack Shephard.  The minions are mobilized.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Can't choose between Chuck and Kate, but the first one's fairly easy: Castiel! Hands down....

    ReplyDelete
  75. I voted for Cas and Kate, as I have never Seen Chuck or Lost. ^_^

    ReplyDelete
  76. Castiel and Beckett for me. Without a doubt. :D

-strolls off to write more of her SPN/Castle headcanon-

    ReplyDelete
  77. I expected him to win by 60%.  I am surprised that it is by 70% at this stage.  However, I am more shocked that Chuck fans haven't taken down Kate Beckett.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Nah, it will be a good time to vote and then studiously avoid the comments.  There will be plenty to talk about in the other threads since we will have had new episodes by that time!    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  79. all you supernatural fans are beyond insane to me.  i truly enjoyed the show the first tow seasons, but after that.....i can't believe people really put it above lost in any sense.  lameos.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Castiel.
A character that that seems goes to the dark side but still lovable and adorable. Just can't hate him no matter what. ^_^

    ReplyDelete
  81. CASTIEL all the way...

I've never been attracted to a character so much in my life!!!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Yeah, and due to the fact that he is one of TV characters who really keep "growing" and developing along with the show (except SPN stupid writers decided to ruin this awesome character in the 6th season).

    ReplyDelete
  83. It may be partly because we Kate fans have just had the delight of her return...

    ReplyDelete
  84. tried to watch Supernatural a long long time ago, but couldn't bring myself to like it no matter what. But yeah, consider that I HAD watched it, 1 vote for Castiel just seems right. (the same goes with Lost, but then I hate Lost even more, so it's a big no-go for Jack)

One vote for Beckett. Not that the character is original or anything,  no, but I can find myself in her, and that is what really matters to me.

Chuck seems to be a great guy. I don't know. Just have a feeling that may be if someday I watch Chuck, I will like this adorable character. But that is another story for another day. So no vote for Chuck as of now.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Everyone has their opinions, doesn't make yours any better than someone else's. Just because you like Lost and enjoy it more doesn't make it superior.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I'd say it will be a Spn and Fringe Final again, I never really got in to Supernatural saw a few episodes season 1 and haven't watched since.
So I'll be voting Fringe all the way

    ReplyDelete
  87. I'm the exact opposite, I saw an episode or two of Fringe, I dunno what season and didn't find it all that interesting. I'll naturally be rooting for Supernatural all the way. Good luck to your show!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Don't get me wrong.  I am delighted that Kate won, blown bracket notwithstanding.  I find Castle vastly superior to Chuck and Kate is a big part of that.  I was disappointed in the premiere though.  I hope it finds its fun footing again soon.

    ReplyDelete
  89. What is missing in Biblical stories regarding angels is character development in angels, if we regard the Bible from the perspective of one doing a literary analysis.  With Castiel, we see his character slowly develop empathy for humans, among many other things. With recent stories taking him into territory that is assuredly NOT in the Bible (SPN fans would know what I mean here), it would be incredibly difficult to argue Castiel is not a truly original character played by an actor with an amazing range of skills.  I speak as both a devoted fan of the TV show and an Ph.D. who has taught World Literature.  Meanwhile, I do agree with Chuck is also an original character. However, like many SPN fans, I have been completely wooed by Misha Collins' brilliant acting and this well-written character.
