Supernatural - Episode 7.06 - Slash Fiction

20 Aug 2011

Episode 7.06 of Supernatural will be called "Slash Fiction" and will feature a new recurring character called Frank who is a bit of a mad computer genius.

100 comments:

  1. Okay.. that sounds weird.. but Ash was the computer genius...why do they need another one?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Perhaps because Ash has gone to a better place and can't be used as a consultant for Sam and Dean......! regards..

    ReplyDelete
  3. Ash was a cool computer genius, not a mad computer genius. :D

    ReplyDelete
  4. Interesting title. Not a slash fiction fan myself so I'm hoping the title means something else.
Wonder who they've cast as Frank? Supernatural casting is so great at bringing in the right people, so I bet it's someone awesome. And who 'recurs' for more than 2 episodes. 'Mad computer genius' - seems like a great new character.

    ReplyDelete
  5. OK....Now they real question is if Frank is Becky's new boyfriend... LOL
OMG seriously that title...are they gonna update 'The monster at the end of the book' and introduce the audience to other kinds of slash...

    ReplyDelete
  6. thanks sounds interesting

  7.  Not so sure about the title; can't say it inspires me but In Supernatural nothing is ever what it seems.
I just hope it is not a  "meta" episode as I really dislike them, although I know that they are a great favourite with the majority of fans.

However  I'm glad that they don't seem to have taken their usual path of bringing dead people back to life, as they could have done with Ash.

It's great to get a new character and a recurring one too.
    Way to go!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Interesting. A recurring character. Extra help to fight the big bad that none of their usual tools and tricks work on? Maybe slash is like slasher not like slash....if you know what I mean! Really...is it September yet?

    ReplyDelete
  9. FRANK? Nice dig at LiveJournal there guys.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Acute observation.
Slash as in slasher or knife -wielding  killer/monster.
I think you've got it right.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Urgh!  I had hoped we were done with all this annoying "meta".

    ReplyDelete
  12. I don't mind geeks--and now that Castiel is pretty much past tense, "Supernatural" could use a strong nerd character to play off all the cool people. If they're doing that, though, I would've liked to've seen Ash come back. No doubt Heaven is more fun than hunting monsters on Earth again, but he was a good character they never did enough with.

  13.  read sweetondeans post.........

    ReplyDelete
  14.  He was a great unused-enough character but I really don't want to see anyone else brought back from the dead as it just takes away the drama  and tension of death in the show.,
                                                                                   regards

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ugh. This better not be a meta episode catering to the depraved Wincest fanatics. Normal people still watch this show, I hope the producers know that.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I read the title of this and all I can think of is "Sam/Dean together."  I doubt that is what's going on, but still... Gives me a bit of a giggle.  Glad there is a new character being introduced,

    ReplyDelete
  17. I guess I'm not awake enough yet to think of any NC-17-stuff when reading the title, 'cause the first thing I thought of when reading "Slash" was actually "amazing rock guitarist" ... XDD

And why does everyone think about it being a "meta" episode when reading the title? Because it says "fiction"? Hmmmm. I don't think so.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The episode titles are rarely what they appear to be as we know from past experience

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well that's... ominous.

I don't know if I should be scared or excited, or both.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Have to say, I immediately thought of slash as in slash (fan)fiction. But I suppose the title is just to mess with us a bit. right now, I agree with sweetondean, and they mean slash as in... blood/killing-slash.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The title does recommend itself.  I knew they were going to have some new characters this season.  The one I had heard the most about a conspiracy nut.  I wonder the this mad computer genius is one and the same with the one I heard about?

    ReplyDelete
  22. aww, I read "slash" and it reminded me of Chuck... I miss Chuck. Maybe the new character will replace him for me. A mad computer genius called Frank sounds promising, I can already imagine his interaction with Dean and the jokes xD
but i don't think the episode has anything to do with meta and the Sam/Dean slash. They've already been there and I don't think they're going there again.

    ReplyDelete
  23. ITA, no more bringing people back from the dead. I'm ready for some new, entirely ALIVE characters. The show does need some fresh blood instead of going back to same ones over and over again.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It hardly suggests it's gonna be meta. It's just a title. they're probably just playing mind games with us... again ;)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ash is gone and I'm sick of characters coming back from the dead every five minutes it's predictable and old.

I'm looking forward to there being some new characters this season, hopefully they'll be more interesting than the ones in season 6 regardless of how long the writers intend to keep them around for.

    ReplyDelete
  26. my thoughts were that it'll be like the Tulpa in season 1 and the pages/horrors of what is being written is coming to life?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ash was a naked computer genius.  :-P

    ReplyDelete
  28. I like the sound of this idea the best.  That could be a really awesome episode.  I hope you are right.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I concur.  I like the idea of new recurring characters who DON'T die by season's end even better.

    ReplyDelete
  30. As long as Axl doesn't come as part of the deal, I'm in.  The episode could take place at a concert and the Winchesters get on as roadies.  Similar to the PA job.  I could really get into an episode like this too.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Slash Fiction? Oh god yes, please give us wincest again!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh! Perfect oportunity for a Gilmore Girls reunion: Cast Sean Gunnin the role!!!! ;D
Wishful thinking, I know but it would be fun...

Maybe it's a buffy of Ash's... and he contacts the boys because Ash left him some clues....?

I don't know. Maybe they shouldn't have killed Ash off in the first place, but I gusee woulda, shoulda, coulda...

    ReplyDelete
  33. They've never given us Wincest... Becky wrote it and they did that to make fun of Wincest fans, but Wincest is not canon, regardless of how much you or anybody else want it to be.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I highly doubt this title has anything to do with slash fanfiction. What I'm guessing is that this title has to do with a slasher, knife, something that cuts, something bloody.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Interesting theory, SammyWsGirl. I like reading fanfiction just about anyday and I read Supernatural fanfiction from time to time. Slash fiction makes me feel a little uneasy depending on who is involved. There can be good storylines and there can be bad ones. I guess we will find out when the episode gets closer.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Great idea! I highly doubt it either. The show is making a "funny" with a provocative title, and the episode will likely pay homage to the "slasher horror movies" (that both of the Js have been "in" as well as having having lead roles in their most recent).

    ReplyDelete
  37. I *assume* that if "Frank" is going to recurring character, he's going to be sort of like Ash was, only he will be concentrating more on law evasion (hacking into police/FBI databases) for the Winchesters (and Bobby) than "YED detection".

If *this* ^^^ is true, this gives a little more credence to the theory that Bobby's house will either be entirely destroyed in the first few episodes or made "uninhabitable" short term at least.

I wonder how the boys run into Frank - is he a friend from either of their High School days? (I would say "college friend of Sam's" but we already had some of those on the show - Rebecca/Zach and demon!Brady - it's Dean's turn to run into an old friend or acquaintance IF Frank is someone from the boys' past).

Or just someone the boys (or Bobby) encounter on a "case"?  I'm assuming for the moment that Frank isn't the same character as Bobby's "conspiracy theorist" friend, but that may not be true and "they're" same character.

    ReplyDelete
  38. OMG, now you really got me thinking about this XDD ... Supernatural definitely need an episode that somehow includes some kick-ass rock concert XDD ... I'd absolutely love that *g*

    ReplyDelete
  39. It seems like alot of people are against the whole "meta" thing, but I hope it is "meta" :D I love meta episodes, and this seems like a funny kind of episode, so I'm looking forward to it x]

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'd be happier if everyone on the Supernatural set forgot that Wincest was even in the fandom.  Even putting it suggestively in the title is too much for me.  Let's bury this thing on the show for good.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm pretty sure Frank is not from their high school experience.  They've already done that in the episode Jensen directs.  I doubt if he will be like Ash either although I understand that some people want Ash back.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm guessing (hoping) that the title is misleading, much like "The French Mistake."

    ReplyDelete
  43. I'm not categorically against meta episodes.  I take every episode individually and judge it on its own merit.  Some of Supernatural's meta stuff was done much better than others.  It's hit and miss, basically.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Mark your calendar because this is a milestone.  We are in complete agreement.  I'm talking simpatico, 100% rock-solid agreement.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I don't want Ash back - let Ash stay in Heaven and you're right, Daphne, I wasn't thinking about 7.03 TGND; I doubt the show would have another HS chum introduced so soon after bringing Sammy's HS "friend" back. Still this would be a opportunity to have a Teen!Dean flashback.

    ReplyDelete
  46. considering that we have no such thing for supernatural, i'm totally shocked by this title!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I noticed that too and with LJ having a very large community of slash writers the references keep on coming. I totally think the title is meant to be a reference only and misleading as to the episode's actual content. I already posted over on FB earlier that the slash probably means the gory kind of slash em up not actual slash romance. But I still love and fully appreciate that TPTB on SPN acknowledge the fandom and indulge us, all of us even those that enjoy and write slash (unlike some series where TPTB openly deny and look down on slash). I mean come on they've been indulging the slash community since season 1 it's entirely their own fault that wincest and destiel exists at all. Might as well continue to indulge the slash community with fun little bits that can be called canon (DSotM: "...soul mates" PoNR: "...erotically codependent" and other fun if you read it that way moments) but that don't fully cross the line for those who don't get into slash. There are both sides of the fence and I really don't like those that look down on the slash fans as if they are lesser fans or they are corrupting the show or something. The show is inviting to all types of fans, so why can't fans be as understanding of each other? If you want to ignore the little slashy shoutouts then you're free to do so, but don't bum us out by going on at slash fans for being insane or just seeing what we want to see. We see what everyone else sees just in a different perspective because the writers give us that option.

And sorry for getting into a short rant as a reply to you but I saw some comments up above blasting slash fans and just decided to combine an all inclusive post.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Something strange was posted. Over at IMDB these are the titles
that are being given for the episodes and IMDB was pretty on the ball
all last season... what do you guys think?

    The list is:

    1. Meet the New Boss

    2. Hello Cruel World

    3. Girl Next Door

    4. Brother's Keeper instead of Defending Your Life

    5. First Hunt instead of Shut Up Dr Phil

    6. Little Green Men instead of Slash Fiction

    ReplyDelete
  49.  They probably have more than one option on episode titles.
I think that Jared Padalecki mentioned in an interview that "Houses of the Holy" had had three different on-going titles and then they settled on that one.
So I suppose this is the same thing.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'm 100% with you on this. I want to hurl every time I come across that word - I don't understand how people can think that incest (even fictional) can be a good thing. It's just wrong, wrong, wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Amen to all of this. I couldn't agree more with you. It IS wrong. When I go onto DeviantArt (because I'm an artist and love to draw) and I see that stuff in the groups I'm in, I just gag because I can't even fathom it it's so wrong... people DRAW that stuff really detailed and just... omg. I don't even click on it. A thumbnail of it is just enough to make one feel nauseated...

    ReplyDelete
  52. We should consider this a national holiday.  A parade at minimum.

    ReplyDelete
  53. If I can get Ridge Canipe as teen Dean I'm all on board.  Less thrilled about a Brock redoux.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I'm trying to see how Little Green Men and Slash Fiction could relate to the same episode.  I wouldn't take anything as ins tone right now.  They change title names like crazy and IMDB was the one with the fake information that JDM was going to be back last season.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Me, too, as to both. I'm willing to give Brock a second chance because Dabb/Lolfin (in After School... ) were still struggling with writing "Dean" - (I think they've mostly done a very good job writing Sam and young Sam). They wrote Adult!Dean (in A S S) a little OOC and Teen!Dean more OOC. This is nothing to do with D/L but I didn't care for Teen!Dean's "accent" either; he and Teen!Sam (Colin Ford) sounded like they lived in different parts of the country.

Every time something like this comes along I just know someone is going to assume I am one of those fans.

(Not that there's anything wrong with it. I, too, can see the appeal of man on man action.)

    ReplyDelete
  57. I aware. I'm just saying IMDB wasn't wrong about episode titles last season.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Oh believe me, I do too. I write it as well as read it. I do NOT like slash fanfics when it completely takes away from the dynamic of the character or what he's been made to be this entire time and that's NOT gay for another man, an angel OR his brother... Wincest makes me feel ill...

    ReplyDelete
  59. No, there is nothing wrong with man on man action. There's a difference between wanting to pair a male character up with another male, but when you pair him up with his brother and it turns into incest, that's when it's wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I like this too! I think it'd be awesome to see them play homage to the slashers that both Js have been in. Wonderful theory!

    ReplyDelete
  61. bigtrickedoutnametag21 August 2011 at 07:20

Oh, my comment was a little nonexclusive, wasn't it? I guess I figured Dean and Castiel were the new thing. That pair I understand.

I definitely agree about Sam and Dean, I would've been happy being unaware of that fantasy.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Not particularly. I mean if people want to believe it, then let them. There has never been any indication given that Dean and Castiel are gay lovers. There are jokes made off and on, but Dean isn't gay. After 6 years, I can't see them making him gay now. If people want to pair him up in fanon, fine with me, but it's not canon. It never has been, and at this rate, it never will be.

I'm glad you do... and I'm sorry you had to find out about it. Welcome to the Supernatural fandom and the creepy, disturbing side of it.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Ok but I still don't know who Frank is.

    ReplyDelete
  64. If we start writing now, maybe we'll have enough to get the wog and the howler after the Winchesters. :P

    ReplyDelete
  65. That's the first thing I thought of when I read this title. "they did it again... we'll be speculating for WEEKS on this one..."

    ReplyDelete
  66. bigtrickedoutnametag21 August 2011 at 07:59

    Thanks. :)

You know, I've always figured Dean as someone who sees himself as straight, but hasn't had that moment or person to change his mind... and really, outward appearance and all the heterosexual, penis-in-vagina sex in the world doesn't mean he's strictly heterosexual. Cause we don't know what goes on in their heads on a day-to-day basis unless it's shown to us. Or he tells us.

Not to say, since Castiel has come along, he's going to start having one night stands with men and hanging out in gay bars. But... yeah...

    ReplyDelete
  67. I'm wondering where the idea came from in the first place. How can you even come up with the idea that brothers would make a good couple? I swear some people are just sick in the head.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Ridge is now 17 so I think if they ever wanna present teen Dean again, they should go for him. I believe he was just still too young when they filmed ASS. He must have been around 14 at the time.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Sounds like something the slash fans are gonna get happy over....

    ReplyDelete
  70. "Frank is the LiveJournal.com mascot. He helps us with random programming
when we get behind, and occasionally he answers tech support requests. Frank's really quite versatile.... he even does the yardwork sometimes. When the lawn gets overgrown we go, "Hey Frank! It's lunch time.... go eat the lawn!". It's really a win-win situation."

    ReplyDelete
  71. The show really instigated the wincest thing. Think back to season 1 and all the times Sam and Dean were mistaken for a gay couple. The way those two act around each other and the things they do isn't strictly normal brotherly behavior from the viewpoint of normal people. But of course the Winchesters aren't quite normal either but that doesn't stop people from reading into things a little bit further. I think the episode Playthings sums it up quite well "The most troubling thing is why do these people assume we're gay." "Well you are pretty butch maybe they thing you're over compensating." Also there are way too many times that Dean picks on Sam for being gay or being a girl which could easily be construed as Dean knows more than we do. It's all about how you want to view the perspective and read between the lines which SPN gives plenty of opportunities for. Of course in real life incest is terrible and nasty but SPN is not real and there are situations in the show that could explain that sort of taboo relationship. Again it's all about view and I wish everyone would respect others views. The show will never fully give slash on the show because they won't alienate the rest of the fans but they respect that side of the fandom enough to give fun lines and hints every so often.

    ReplyDelete
  72. PWHAHAHHAHAHAHHAA - 12 hours later - PWAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Well, we could be way wrong and the episode does have something to do with "slash fiction" but I don't see how the show would realistically pull it off, except if one of the lead characters (Dean, Sam, Bobby, Castiel) "suddenly" admits to being or having bi or gay inclinations, even if he hasn't acted on them yet.

It might be *somewhat possible* since 7.05 is titled "Shut up, Dr. Phil" (or First Hunt? - probably at least one of the first 6 episodes will have title changes before they air) ... the B storyline of the episode might be the brothers having serious talks about their "hellish life experiences and their unresolved insecurities" which could lead  to various admissions, including sexual confusion (not of having sexual feelings about the other brother) and be carried over to the next episode. It's still more logical to me that the title would have to more to do with killer MOTWs than slash pairings. The alternate title on IMDB (that may not be correct either) has nothing to do with "slash fiction".

    ReplyDelete
  74. ...what? Shut Up, Dr. Phil is the episode that Charisma Carpenter and James Marsters are playing in as a husband who married a witch (Charisma) and he pissed her off, now the witch is terrorizing the whole town. I highly doubt the brothers talks are going to consist of some big sexual confessions or confusion... Especially since Jensen just told us that Dean hit on a girl in a bar and she responded back with an offer and Dean's all "ooooh forgot what that felt like!"

    ReplyDelete
  75. Sounds really intriguing and I'm sure they have something completely different in mind with the title "Slash Fiction" & I bet it's not what come to mind first heheh

    ReplyDelete
  76. I know what the A storyline of 7.05 concerns; I was speculating about a B storyline tied to the title that could have carryover to 7.06 IF *that title* concerns "slash" as in fiction and not as a verb "to slash" (cut)".

As I said it's more likely the title "Slash Fiction" has to more to do with murderous MOTW's (in homage to the Slasher Horror Genre) than taxicab confessions that any of the leading characters would have.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Let's get on that then.  Perhaps they can each attack one of the Winchesters.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Dean has told us over and over again that he is heterosexual.  However, slash fans always downplay that or say he is overcompensating.  Sometimes people just mean what they say.

    ReplyDelete
  79. bigtrickedoutnametag22 August 2011 at 02:22

Sometimes they think they mean what they say as well. Which goes with what I was saying... about a certain person or moment. I'm willing to admit that I can be completely wrong about that. No one knows a character, except the writer of the character. And even then, nothing is concrete, cause people aren't just something you can label and categorize. We're too complicated for that.

Why do I have the feeling I'd make an excellent slash fan?

    ReplyDelete
  80. I think that's a very good call indeed. Definitely a tongue-in-cheek reference and a wink at us fans, while utilizing a different plot. Smarty pants writers!

    ReplyDelete
  81.  I agree with you completely.

I liked the way R Canipe portrayed young Dean.
I felt his emotions were expressed better in the young Dean-Sam dynamic than with  B Kelly as Dean.

I'm sure that the make-up artists could adjust the ageing problems if there were any

It would be wonderful to see an episode on Sam and Deans' first hunt together.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Well, you know that they always want to keep us viewers as confused as possible and I, for one, love that.

It's great to be kept in the dark and get a completely different read on the title when you see the episode......

    ReplyDelete
  83. I'd rather have Cas back or Ash. He was kind of a mad computer genius.. Also, that is VEEERY original with a geek.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Think slasher movies, not the other thing. That's what I'm doing. Makes way more sense.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Couldn't agree more, Dahne.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Ash was a naked, cool computer genius who went up in flames. Hence - new guy needed. :)

    ReplyDelete
  87. I like the old recurring characters.  Meh.  And computer geeks are so cliche.  Every procedural has them.  Maybe they are trying to turn this show into a thinly veiled procedural rather than an more episodic drama it became the last two to three season.  In which case, yawn.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Yes please more Wincest and Destiel.
