POLL : What is your favourite season of 30 Rock ?

19 Aug 2011

Hi. I didn't know how to introduce today's poll, donc j'ai décidé de le faire en français.

  1. I'm gonna go with season 1, followed by seasons 2 and 5. 30 Rock is only my #4 favorite comedy on NBC (Community, Parks and Rec and The Office are above imo) but it doesn't mean I don't like the show, quite the opposite, I love it.

I like its very fast-paced humor, it reminds me a little bit of Arrested Development (btw, Will Arnett's character in 30 Rock, with the sexual tension between him and Jack, is just awesome every time). There are tons of jokes, sometimes very subtle, and they don't stop, they never stop, they don't care about character development, shipper couples and such, and I like that. I love the references to TV or to NBC's situation, I love the illustration of some bizarre sequences popping up out of the mind of Liz or Jack (Scrubs style), I love how half of what Tracy says doesn't make any sense, I love Frank's hats. Sure, Jenna can be extremely annoying sometimes (a character with as selfish and self-centered as hers is bound to be on the edge of being just plain irritating) but despite her, I manage to always have a laugh on each episode.

Seasons 3 and 4 were a bit disappointing, I have to say. The prestigious guest stars became more and more useless, the supporting cast was wiped out in half of the episodes (sometimes it was basically Liz + Jack + guest-star of the week and 1-2 scenes with Jenna/Tracy). But I never thought about stopping watching, 30 Rock was still above many sitcoms. Granted, I don't think the show deserves all its Emmy wins and nominations, it might be too much compared to other deserving comedies (comedies right there on NBC, too, for instance) which never got anything and probably never will. But it's far from a travesty to say that Tina Fey is a talented actress and writer, that Alec Baldwin kicks ass and that most episodes deliver awesome lines.

And season 5 came back pretty close to the level of awesomeness of the first two seasons. Some highlights of the season were the brilliant live show and the 100th episode, of course, but there was much more than that. It may just be an impression but I think they tried not to be smothered by a big amount of guest stars, they tried to focus more on some plotlines involving the main characters, like Jack's fatherhood (loved his relationship between Avery/Jack, and I love how it ended - her being abducted by communists was pretty ironic considering they're both Reagan hardcore fans, I hope she'll come back someday), Liz's relation with Matt Damon (the first time she's ever had a long-lasting relationship on the show) or Tracy's trip to Africa (way to dodge the fact they couldn't get Tracy Jordan because of his surgery).

It saddens me that we have to wait until January 2012 to have 30 Rock back (instead we have reruns of The Office.... after Whitney's cancellation after 2 eps I mean), and it worries me that Alec Baldwin said he thinks the show will end next May, the show has proven last season it still have what it takes to be an outstanding comedy.

  2. I don't know if I have a favorite. O.o
    Maybe season 1,2, 3, 4, 5?

  3. S1 was my favorite.

I stopped really liking the show when it became a parade of ridiculous guest stars. They didn't need gimmicks to make me tune in but they shoved them in my face every week anyway. No thanks.

  4. Season 2 is my favorite.  Why?  For many reasons:

     - Ludachristmas
     - MILF Island  (I love it when they make fun of the TV industry)
     - Tracy's porno video game
     - lots of Dennis Duffy "the beeper king"

  5. Tough deciding between the first 2 seasons, but I'll go with S1.

  6. Probably a toss-up between S1 and S2 for me. Though because Black Tie is my favorite episode, and that's in S1, S1 gets the slight edge.

  7. I picked season 3 but with this show, there is something that you missed the first time around. It's so hard to choose. The quick wit and non-stop humor - a lot very inside - is so fantastic. I'm in mourning that this isn't coming back till January. It was the topper to my Thursday night viewing.
