The lovely Heather Graham (Scrubs season 4, Austin Powers) has just signed to star alongside Rob Corddry (The Daily Show, Childrens Hospital) in Little in Common, a new show created by Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars, Party Down) for FOX. Graham is replacing Paula Marshall who played the part in the pilot shown at the upfronts last May.
Gabrielle Union (FlashForward) & Kevin Hart (Kröd Mändoon) are also part of the main cast of this single-camera comedy about a group of adults who become unlikely friends because of the bonds their respective children have with one another (sport, school buddies). Union and Hart are Brooke & Ty Burleson, a couple who takes sport very seriously.
Alana Ubach (Hung) also star as Maya Pacheco, a single latina mom who dislike the way the Wellers raise their children (Ellie and Dennis Weller are the characters played by Heather Graham and Rob Corddry who just moved from California to Texas, where this show is set).
All these different homes have children :
- The Wellers have a daughter, Minnie (Izabela Vidovic) and a son, Donovan (Skyler Gisondo, young Shawn in Psych).
- The Burlesons have one daughter, Nicole (Campbell Williams), and one son, CJ (Curtis Harris).
- Maya Pacheco has two daughters, Gaby (Jamie White) and Raquel (Rowan Blanchard - she starred in Spy Kid 4D).
Little in Common is not greenlighted yet, so far it's just a pilot being retooled for a possible mid-season lauch as a part of FOX's 2-hour comedy block this Spring on Tuesdays during Glee's hiatus for 8-9 weeks. For now, only one show in this comedy block is known : season 2 of Breaking In season 2, renewed for 13 new episodes (woohoo !).
FOX doesn't have any other comedy pilot in development, Family Album having been dropped a week ago. All they have left to complete this comedy block is I Hate my Teenage Daughter (premiering after The X Factor on November 23), New Girl (if the show is successful and gets a back 9 order, at least) and Raising Hope season 2 (but that would mean less new episodes when Glee comes back in April, unless they get a special extra order of 5-6 episodes).
Botton line, it is very likely that Little in Common will get picked up, and I have to say I am curious : Rob Thomas is a talented writer for both comedy (Party Down was hilarious) and drama (Veronica Mars has a pretty good first season, I haven't seen the rest yet), and even the characters seem a little sterotyped and even if the pitch reminds me somehow of Modern Family with the focus on 3 different families (although here they don't have any blood relatives to tie them up, and there's no gay couple - but there's a black couple), I'm all for it (plus it is set in Texas, that's quite rare for a sitcom, hopefully they'll take adventage of that), I love Modern Family and this cast is great, I hope it will get greenlighted for a 10-13 episode season premiering this February.
