2012 FOX pilots : aliens, spies, cop show 'real TV' style, buddies in high school and mexican housekeepers

FOX is developing 5 new pilots (3 dramas, 2 sitcoms) for 2012. It is likely that if they get a pilot order and then a season pickup, they won't air until September 2012 but it is also possible that one of these shows hit the air this Spring - if I remember correctly, Breaking In (launched in April 2011) was picked up in November 2010.

1 - Stranger Planet, created by Matt Miller (writer on Chuck and showrunner on Human Target season 2) :

It's an action/comedy/sci-fi drama revolving around an LAPD officer who discovers that aliens are living among humans and he teams up with two of them to solve extraterritorial-related cases. Sounds like a keeper to me.

2 - The Asset, created by Josh Friedman (creator/showrunner of The Sarah Connor Chronicles) :

It's a spy/action drama about a CIA agent in the New-York City agency. And like in Alias and Covert Affairs, this spy is a young woman. Hopefully they'll find a way to make this original and fresh.

3 - An untitled drama project created by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Secret Life of Bees and Love & Basketball) :

It's a copshow set in one of the toughest Los Angeles districts, it will follow two women working for the LAPD and they happen to be followed by a camera crew on a daily basis. Detroit 1-8-7 (cancelled after a single season a few months ago) had the same 'documentary' premise when the show was just a pilot but it was eventually dropped out.

4 - El Jefe, created by Moses Port and David Guarascio (creators/showrunners of Aliens in America) :

It's a sitcom about a 30-year old guy who lived happily in his father and mother-in-law's mansion, but they wanted their space so they kicked him out and he ends up living at his housekeepers' (Lupe ?).

5 - Guidance, created by Tim Dowling (writer on feature movies like Role Models and Just Go With It) :

It's a single-camera sitcom described as an "adult buddy comedy set in high school". Ryan Reynolds will execute produce (he's been very involved in the project, pitching it himself to FOX (the first network they had been to) which ultimately decided to commit to it by ordering a script). Tyler Labine (Reaper, Sons of Tucson, Mad Love) will star.

Regarding FOX pilots, Family Album is no longer in contention to be a part of the 2-hour comedy block on Tuesdays for 2 months next Spring. During Glee's hiatus, FOX will program 4 live-action sitcoms in one night for 8-9 weeks. It is likely that New Girl (if it's successful) and Raising Hope won't be a part of it, FOX will want to keep new episodes of these 2 sitcoms to air after new episodes of Glee (it would be pretty stupid to have reruns of Raising Hope in April and May), or else one of them is going to have a 27-28 episode season order, which is unlikely.

All that's left for this block is I Hate my Teenage Daughter (premieres on Nov 23), the pilot in development Little in Common (created by Rob Thomas, not officially ordered yet) and season 2 of Breaking In, which seems more and more likely since Family Album is out of the race. Maybe FOX will 'sacrifice' either of their fall sitcoms (Raising Hope and New Girl) with 4-5 new episodes (+ 2-3 reruns) at 9pm to attract people who usually watch FOX on Tuesdays and give some structure to this new block.

  7. Not a one sounds promising....

I love spy genre series, but saying it's yet another La Femme Nikita/Alias/Covert Affairs rip-off and by anything connected to TSCC.... bleh.

  8. Stranger Planet appeals to me, but I think it will def depend on the cast...

  9. Stranger Planet is the only one that appeals to me out of the bunch. Kinda like Alphas, right? But with aliens, of course. It does sound like a keeper - just like Alphas is ^^,

  10. It feels like I've seen most of these already.  The sci fi one might be interesting although it sounds like MiB.  el Jefe sounds original but not good.  There's a reason I don't watch much on Fox.

  11. Eh, I'm a big fan of Tyler Labine so, although the premise is pretty generic, I'm always down with Buddy comedies and him. Also, the Alien could be fun or terrible. The rest are mad lame.

  12. Hmm, depending on how The Asset gets fleshed out and is promoted, it could be something I'd watch. Love me some lady spies.  And Stranger planet sounds so interesting, mixing cop and comedy with sci-fi. Sci fi is my favorite. If it was done right, it could really be something unique.

  13. Honestly, I like Tyler Labine too. However.... I am beginning to think it is NOT a coincidence that every series he is on is rather short lived.....

Even the comedy timing genius that is Ray Wise couldn't save Reaper.

  14. Stranger Planet seems like a show I would watch. (and would be quickly canceled)

The Asset looks intriguing to me only because I really like Josh Friedman's stuff.  Let's face it, it's not really an original premise in any way.

  15. The asset is only interesting to me because of Josh Friedman.  The guy does great work.  I agree with you about the show in all other respects.

  16. Stranger Planet sounds like it could be really good. El Jefe might be decent if done right. I'm not excited by any of the others but who knows.
