Fantasy writer George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series of novels, which has sold millions of copies, has been given the HBO treatment: a lavish production featuring lush sets, an unwieldy cast and stunning CGI is the latest hit for the premium US channel that, with other hits in its stable such as True Blood, is now officially on a roll.
Screenwriters David Benioff and Dan Weiss, friends of 16 years and firm Ice and Fire fans, took on the task of adapting the first novel, Game of Thrones, for television. Five years later the show is a hit and they're working with their idol and inventing their own fantasy language.
On a conference call from the United States, the pair enthusiastically explained how they set about adapting Martin's complex stories and fantasy world for television.
