Damages - Glenn Close on Season 4 and Mastering Patty Hewes

She's ruthless, cunning, manipulative ... and a doting grandma? What has become of Patty Hewes since viewers last saw her?

I took that question directly to series star Glenn Close at the premiere of 'Damages' Season 4 (Wed., July 13 at 10PM on DirecTV's Audience Network).

"She's at the top of her game, she has this huge suit against an international pharmaceutical company and she's going to win it -- and she knows she's going to win it," Close told me.

'Damages' begins three years after viewers last saw Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) and Patty together, and boy, how things have changed. Ellen has been picking Patty's brain about a huge case against Howard Erickson (John Goodman), the head of a private military defense organization.

"She and Ellen have been having these coffees and one thing leads to another," Close said. "She's kind of moved on."

You play such intense and sometimes terrifying characters at times -- personally '101 Dalmatians' scared the crap out of me ...

When you were 5 years old!? [Laughs]

Yeah! So, how do you get in the Patty Hewes mindset?
I never think of them as terrifying. There have been certain characters in my career that I've personally been intimidated by, and I was intimidated by Patty as an actress. So, I went to my wonderful coach who I go to in moments like that, Harold Guskin, and I worked with him through what I thought was a seminal scene and found how to kind of get into her and that kind of cured me of getting intimidated by it. Yeah, I'm not like that, so --

Clearly!
[Laughs] Characters like that are fascinating and challenging.

It's three years later. She has Catherine now.
She has her granddaughter, which is new.

It's a new side of Patty.
It is a new side -- it makes you realize what a bad mother she was! [Laughs]

What's Patty's relationship like with Ellen now?
It's careful. They have a lot of history. I think Patty would like Ellen to be her No. 2 and I think Patty would like to work with Ellen, but it's also more complex than that. She doesn't want Ellen to succeed more than she does. I think Patty still thinks that no one can do it the way she can do it.
