  1. Holy crap.  I haven't been paying attention to the ratings.  I thought the show was doing alright.  I'm very disappointed.  Creatively, Tara has been much, much better than Nurse Jackie this season, which has been dreadfully repetitive.

  4.  Apparently, "you will not win" was a message for the viewing audience.

  5.  WHAT?!?!?!?!? This fucking sucks, I enjoy both Nurse Jackie and Tara but Tara still has the edge for me and its been getting so good! I'm not used to Showtime breaking my heart like this

  6.  Showtime probably needs Tara's budget for season two of The Borgias.  :)

  7.  i hate tv its bullshit its like someone turns on  movie and turns it off halfway through

  8. Is the Borgias that good, I managed to watch the first five minutes of the pilot and then it just started to irritate me, should I do a catch-up thing or not?

  9.  I guess that would depend on what irritated you about those first five minutes.  Wanna fill me in about that?

  11. Wow, that's a suprise. Were the ratings that bad?

  12. That's just sad. Maybe it wasn't about the ratings. That show is too good to cancel.

  13. Aw frak, this was a good one :(. I was disappointed with a few of the cancellations (mostly the ones on FOX), but I think this is the one tat upsets me the most.

  14. Lol, that's an amusing/depressing way of thinking about it.

  15. I just found it tacky, nothing necessarily about story, just the production maybe, I think a deciding feature in me switching over was the Killing, so yeah? I don't know if I should watch or not.

  16.  It's certainly a "root for the bad guy" show.  The show is non-stop plotting, scheming, sex, violence, and guilt. (obviously, with all the old school Catholics)  There's also a healthy dose of brother/sister sexual tension, as has been historically rumored.

You made the right choice in choosing the Killing but, with summer here, the lack of new programming right now allows me to recommend a catch-up viewing.

  17.  The Borgias is horrible! I am a historian and it really hurts to watch shows like this, same with Tudors. But the Tudors were better, a little bit. Borgias are just ... make me vomit.

  18. terribly bad...maybe they need a new timeslot for new shows. too bad :(

  19.  It's a drama not a documentary.

  20.  I contacted showtime via their contact us ask a question section on their website, anyone who feels strongly about tara I suggest should do the same. It'll take what? Five Minutes MAX- if you're a slow typer and you never know... Given that Showtime isn't one of the big networks it might change the outcome.. Unlikely, but it might so here's the link:

if anyone has an email address of one of the network's higher ups or telephone number to complain, you might want to post that too...

  21.  Of course it is but shouldnt even a drama be historically correct?

    ReplyDelete
  22. If it's a biopic, sure.  Other than that, not really.  Television has a long, long history of manipulating, exaggerating, and even ignoring historical fact for the sake of entertainment.  This is nothing new.

  24. And I thought the bloodshed was over after last week's cancellations, now Showtime is doing it too, damn. Fuck you, Showtime.

Tara > Jackie, imo. Tara is more creative and has a more interesting theme.

Ironically this morning I was worried about United States of Tara's fate and said in the 'what will you be watching tonight' thread that I was afraid the show might get cancelled given it hadn't been renewed yet, and I was hopeful the ratings would go up for the final 4 episodes now that the official 2010/2011 season is over on networks. Showtime executives didn't wait until the season finale in late June to make their decision, unfortunately.

For those who're interested, the 3rd season of Tara has gathered an average of 326 000 viewers at 10:30pm so far (-30% less than season 2), while Jackie has an average of 760 000 viewers for the first 8 episodes. And The Borgias' season finale had 810 000 viewers watching last night. But that doesn't mean much given there are plenty of reruns throughout the week.

I always tend to think pay cable channels always value quality over ratings but now I'm feeling like when Starz cancelled Party Down (a wonderful comedy, it's a must-see for those who enjoy dry, dark humor) : screwed.

If you think about it, United States of Tara is the first Showtime dramedy getting cancelled. Their oldest half-hour programs, Weeds and Californication, were launched in 2005 and 2007 and they're still on.

Tara joins the gang "we were on a pay-cable channel but still, we were cancelled", alongside Carnivàle & Deadwood on HBO, Gravity & Party Down on Starz, Dead Like Me, Huff & Brotherhood on Showtime.

Flight of the Conchords, In Treatment and The Comeback were also all cancelled by HBO a few months after their last Season Finale aired, but I've seen those three shows and their endings are proper endings. They may not have been planed as final episodes but they're all satisfying and not frustrating at all.
