ReplyDeleteTell me, do you think there's ANY possibility of consummation between
Dean and Cas? (and that consummation doesn't have to be sexual) Can you
see Dean ever saying "I love you" in a romantic way, "will you marry me"
or having sex with Cas? Will Cas ever say or do either one to Dean? If
your answer is no then that's a big roadblock in wanting to call these
two a couple. Every couple in this competition has done or has the
possibility of doing at least one of those (and that includes Blaine and
Kurt from Glee if any of you still think this has anything to do with
homophobia).
I think Dean said it best in episode 20 of this season: "[Cas,] you are like a brother to me".

Okay, listen, I watched Supernatural's first episode when it aired and I've been watching it since and I'm positive that the writers NEVER intended for Dean and Cas to become a couple. They have a way of writing two guys that care for each other on this show as a couple. If Dean loves Cas the way that you say he does then we should see him say 'I love you' at some point in the series. But if you disgree with me then I'll ask you a more basic question: will Dean and Cas ever kiss on the show? Do you see Dean at some point in season 7, grabbing Cas and laying a loving kiss on him like he has before with Lisa or Jo? If the answer is 'no' then that means that regardless of the way they were written, the writers probably never intended for them to be a couple. Unlike every other couple in this competition.

I think you need to understand that your opinion is not everyone's and that thousands of us with all our hearts believe in Dean and Cas as a couple. We see the romance there. You don't? That's fine. But don't sit there and tell us what we're allowed to see. Perception is entirely subjective and you do not get to dictate what is and what is not a valid interpretation of the text.

Modern ideas make it sexual. I disagree with that.
Therefore, a couple who is connected by something stronger than earthly bonds or sexual contact:

"Every other couple" is an exaggeration. Jane and Lisbon from The Mentalist were on there at one point, and there's no sign that the writers intend to ever make them a couple.

Sad to say I doubt any male/male action's going to happen onscreen on Supernatural (I'm right in thinking Bobby and Crowley's deal-making kiss was offscreen, right...?) but that's kind of irrelevant when Castiel can change bodies; if it's announced tomorrow that the reason Misha Collins is no longer a regular is that Castiel's switching into an Angelina Jolie-shaped vessel, would you still think Dean/Castiel's never ever going to happen?

To everyone saying Dean and Castiel aren't a "real" couple. Define a couple. As many commenters below have, I agree with them. They have an extremely profound bond that I find to be much stronger than the other couples in this competition. I adore Booth and Brennan and have watched Bones since the beginning. However, until the past two episodes they did not "consummate" their relationship. They still are not technically together. Does this mean they are not a couple? No, I believe they still are. Therefore I can say the same thing about Dean and Castiel, who have proven their devotion to one another time and time again. They may not have kissed or slept together or said that they loved each other, but that doesn't mean they don't love each other. If you don't think they are a good pair, then simply don't vote for them. Please don't criticize the pairing and insult those of us who do.

ReplyDeleteWhy is your definition of consummation so... obvious? So blatant? Why can't consummation be subtle? Supernatural is a show fuelled by characters who find it impossible to express themselves emotionally - a blatant 'I love you' or 'be my angel bride' would be completely incongruous with the ethos of the show. Those sentiments could be directed toward a female love interest and they'd still be uncharacteristic. There's no part of the definition of romance that suggests it requires closure in order to exist. Romance can be romance without catharsis, and for me their 'romance' was confirmed throughout the entire series finale. Cas doing everything for Dean. Cas healing Dean's ex-lover, even after the way Dean refused to forgive him. Cas always coming when he called. Hell, the only thing that drove Cas to power-hungry mania was Dean's refusal to stand behind him. Cas needed Dean to ground him and without him he snapped. And even after Cas had betrayed him, had become something unrecognisable, Dean's face was the picture of devastation when he thought Sam killed Cas. That's romance of the most complex and heartbreaking calibre - by this point 'I love you' would be redundant.

What else do you think Dean was going to compare his feeling for Cas when he's got no relationships of that mangnitude besides his brother [who is the most important person to him in the world and Cas was just comapred to *that*]. Damon/Elena isn't canon and Booth/Bones wasn't when this was made. Not all of these couples are canon, they're just the fan favorites and Dean/Castiel is very much a fan favorite.

This poll was about fan favorite couples - other couples that aren't canon or weren't when this competition started made it on. It's just the fan favorites. Supernatural is impressive in that the fan favorite couple isn't heterosexual - it's also unimpressive in that the fan favorite couple isn't heterosexual because there is an unfortunate degree of female character hating going on. It'd be unfair to include a canon couple such as Dean/Lisa, for instance, in this poll because the fans, in general, don't like that couple. Supernatural fans may have gone out of their way to vote for whatever couple was up against them just so they lose.
I see your point. There is next to 0% chance of anything ever happening in an overtly romantic manner between the two, where there is no question if Dean and Cas are or are not a "couple." That being said, you can't deny they've pushed at it this season - maybe not to set it up, but I'm sure they've wanted the fan base talking about it. It's probably an impossible thing, but when has that ever stopped the internet from going for it? We're all just having fun here and Supernatural fans deserve to have their favorite couple in the competition too.
I think the second poll might just have let me vote twice.. I mean the first time there was 2710 votes for Klaine and when I tried to vote again, 2711 votes. Might as well be a coincidence.

I think Dean and Castiel are a wonderful example of both love and romance. They clearly care deeply for each other, and I don't know that sexual overtones (whether we see them on the show or not) make that caring any more or less intense.

ReplyDeleteI really wasn't going to comment again on this poll 'cause I've already stated my opinion but some of these comments really frustrate me. Clearly you (and that goes to no one specific) do not watch the show. Dean and Castiel love each other. Some call it friendship, some family, some profound bond and I don't know what else. I do not label it. I don't care what it is I only care that it exists.
ReplyDeleteWhen an Angel turns his back on heaven to help a human, when he rebels and almost falls from Grace for the human and what he believes, when he's willing to die and had died for him, to me that's love.
When a human like Dean Winchester says to an Angel that he is family, that he doesn't want to lose him too, that he would die for him (and he almost did a couple of times) that to me is love. And in the middle of a war, between lies and betrayal, Dean never even came close to attacking Cas and Cas stabbed Balthazar cause he betrayed him (RIP Balthazar. You will be missed :( ) but never ever tried to harm Dean.
That's it, I think I'm done. That to me is LOVE. Find a better and more accurate definition for that if you can.
The finale shouldn't sway anyone's opinion. Dean consider Castiel part of his family. And Dean will go to absolutely every length to help his family, including making deals with demons and going to hell. Dean will fight to save Castiel from himself.

ReplyDeleteFamily is everything to Dean, you're right - and Cas broke Sam's wall. Cas is the one threatening his family (i.e. Sam and Bobby) right now (what he did to Sam could have killed him, and we still don't know the extent of the damage), and I don't see how Dean and Cas are gonna come back from that, not easily.

Just sayin', but even Supernatural itself adressed the topic of the fandom shipping Dean/Sam ... but they didn't do this way after the shipping already started. And I doubt they ever actually INTENDED for people to ship Sam/Dean ... for one: yah. They're brothers.
I'm not saying the writers might not have pushed it wish Dean/Cas ... I guess I'm too much of a fan of them as friends (brothers, actually) to ever even notice that.
But what I wanted to say with that examply of Sam/Dean:
EVERY couple (canon or not) is intended to be seen as one by the creators / writers of the show if the fans want to see it this way ...
And then there's those who don't ship those two as a couple, thus don't really agree on them having pushed it this season ... which makes the whole discussion about how obvious or not obvious it was that they were intended or not intended to have romantic (you know what kind of "romantic" I mean here) feelings for each other an ENDLESS discussion.
And thumbs up on the very last sentence. That's how more fans should think about this, imo.

You know, even if it might never happen, Dean and Cas share a profound bond and they always have little moments where it seems like they're gazing deep inside each other. It has the hints, it has the innuendos, and therefore fans all over have delved into that connection. I love the shipping of the two, and this is just a little poll for the fans who would like to see them together :) I know there's a very small chance the writers of Supernatural would actually step into those waters.... but it's nice to dream. So that being said, please respect our fantasies just as we're respecting the other voters who aren't pining for Dean and Castiel to win :3

ReplyDeleteRegarding the rest of family - Sam has also done things that ought to be unforgivable, including beating Dean to run off with a demon, and of course bringing on the apocalypse.
But family is the only thing that matters to Dean, and for him to finally say the word to Castiel, repeatedly and recently, is a strong indication that the show will give us at least an attempt at reconciliation and redemption.
What actually happens in the long run, I'm not speculating.

I mean, we, saltgunners, try hard to make people see how important this show is to us, even though CW hates it, even though they're trying to find a reason to cancel this awesome show... we just wanna show them how much we love Supernatural. So it doesn't matter if there's Dastiel, Wincest, Dean/Lisa, Sam/Ruby or something totally random like Sam/Crowley in a competition. We'll vote for Supernatural, because we're not just fans. Whatever the final result is, for me, D/C have win already. Just the fact that they've made it in to semi final, despite MANY arguments and non-voters (even the blatant hate for this pairing) that will always exist each time they're up.
God, yes. Cas currently contains the power of a supernova and the only thing he seeks is love. When Raphael was running for president he spoke of apocalypse and freeing Lucifer, but all Cas wants is to be better than his Father. He's nothing more than an abandoned son, adamantly refusing to follow in his deadbeat dad's footsteps, just like Dean. He wants to fix his father's mistakes, and in doing so he's blindly stepping into the same traps - just like Dean. All Dean wanted was to be better father than John and that lead to nothing more than a little boy with a wiped mind, a slapped face, and a stabbed mom.
ReplyDeleteCas wants to be God because God failed Heaven and Earth and he feels some sort of hereditary obligation to fix it. It's not a power trip - it's a responsibility. When Cas was abandoned by his Heavenly family there was this huge, gaping chasm left in him that the Winchesters and their dysfunctional unit eventually filled. And then they left him, when he needed them most. For Dean 'family' is the strongest and most loving word he knows, his only means of expressing emotion, so he tells Cas he's his brother. But for Cas, family is defined by betrayal and abandonment, so he refuses to be Dean's family; he rejects all the hurt attached to such a notion, and instead insists on becoming Dean's God - because that's the most loving word in HIS vocabulary.
They're just two very damaged little boys with good intentions trying to find the best way to love each other and screwing up hugely in the process. It hurts the good hurt.
