I just love Ned's no-nonsense attitude! "If you would like to change into something more... appropriate?" Ned just glares... Ha!
Methinks Cersei may be the first "stage mother". I wonder if its origins were from "Stag Mother"? Maybe not....
I love Old Nan... she will be missed! The actress that played her died in February.
Tyrion continues to shine for me. I will be shocked if he is not nominated for an Emmy like a few others have suggested.
This episode really highlighted the real "meat" of Game of Thrones. The histories that affect the overall plot were delved into a bit deeper too.
Interesting that Jon who has always felt inferior at home felt superior when he arrived at Castle Black and The Wall. Now the lessons begin and he realizes all men are equal... some more than others.
I loved the look into the Night's Watch, how hard the life is and how the once proud gaurdians of the Severn Kingdoms are now mostly a ragtag bunch of undertained and underfed naer-do-wells.
Many changes from the books to TV this week, more than the previous two weeks combined I think. Most had to do with who says what, but a few were due to combining scenes or moving scenes up or back in the timeline for effect. Most made sense or were understandable, however some I do not understand at all.
I think Arya with her "dance instructor" is one of the two best scenes so far in the series. The subtle looks the actress gives are so meaningful, and the her proud father's face as he watches. Ned going from the joy a father feels seeing his daughter so happy to the horror a parent feels at maybe witnessing the future before his eyes as Master Syrio says "Death" over and over.
Brilliant episode! I think it finally clicked between me and Game of Thrones, I was already afraid it would become a second Fringe to me - a show I know is good and that I watch, but that I don't really care about.
Well, where to begin? Finally the whole Targaryen/Dothraki storyline begins to get interesting. First of all Daenerys starts accepting her role as their queen, furthermore she seems to be sympathizing with the Dothraki ways. Her relationship with Drogo definitely evolved and she's pregnant. But the most important thing for me was the breach in her relationship with her brother. She starts to stand up against Viserys which could have serious repercussions in the long run. Interested to see what's happening next.
Littlefinger was a great new character, I've been waiting for him since day one and it was absolutely worth it. He instantly became my fav character besides Tyrion. Gillen did a great job! Tyrion himself was very interesting to watch again as was everything going on at the wall. Jon having a hard time adapting to his new life and comrades and the stories about the white walkers. I hope that the white walker sightings are part of a long-term story-line that doesn't really start this season, I'd prefer to see more of the Stark/Lannister conflict this season.
Hearing that the king is in serious debt was surprising. Don't know how this can affect his reign, but I suppose it won't be the last time we heard about this. 6 million sounds like a lot and I don't see how Ned can fix this problem. The Cersei/Joffrey scene as well as the Cersei/Jaime scene were very intriguing. I don't know what the Lannisters have in mind, but they are up to something big. I'm not sure Tyrion is on board with this, neither if he was the one hiring the hitman to kill Bran, even though he said he loves his family last episode. It seems to me like he has his own agenda, but it's too early to tell.
From reviews I read it seems like it clicks for many people in this episode... and the next. Glad you got there completely now!
Yea, it's awesome to see Dany growing into a woman! Since she was a baby Viserys has raised her and left little room for her to be her own person. Now she is seeing outside of his perspective and finding herself... Her story or chapters were the hardest for me to connect to, but the fast pace of the series has actually made it easier for me I think.
Assuming the series does not stray too much from the books,.. you can relax. The world outside the wall lingers there and does not come into play directly too much this season. Just like you want it is more about the 2 Houses. Well, 4 Houses (Stark, Lannister, Baratheon and Targaryen) but mostly the first 2.
Maisie Williams is doing an amazing job. It's a pity that HBO didn't add her to their list of Emmy submissions, she deserved at least that. On the other hand I don't really understand why Jason Momoa is included on that list. At least so far he didn't do a lot to earn that..
Added the Thronecast videos for the first 2 episodes to our video page. Just go to http://www.video.spoilertv.com where you can find them in the podcast section. Currently you can also find them in the first 10 videos, but that won't last too long I guess.
Seeing that Viserys isn't a very nice person, mainly caring about his throne and considering that so far he used her as a tool to get back his throne, it looks like Daenerys didn't have the chance to find her own identity. Now that she's developing own of her own, it looks like Viserys doesn't like what she's becoming. I guess he doesn't want her to think and act freely, but she also is his last family member and now they seem to grow apart, something I'm sure he doesn't like at all.
That's what I suspected. It's good to hear that for the moment they are concentrating on the political aspects of the story and slowly build up the white walkers story line for later.
Right now I'm having a bit of a hard time telling who really qualifies as female lead or not, to me it almost seems like Daenerys is the female lead. Right now she definitely has the most screen time. But I also guess Emilia Clarke doesn't have the name to nominated as lead actress yet.
I really wondered if the opening scene was appropriate honestly. I suspected it may have set up a lot of watchers that haven't read the books to think the series is about sword battles and a supernatural enemy beyond the wall. To be certain, there is sword battles, but it is NOT an "action" series like most fantasy series. It's character driven. It's performance driven.
My fear was that many would be mislead and find the future episodes boring since there was not much more sword play in the first book honestly. There will be a lot of drama and intensity still, but not a lot of "traditional action". If that makes sense. I am really interested to see how the ratings do this week and the next two. I have read that episode 6 is where it all kicks into gear. By most accounts that was the best episode of the 6 (8?) episodes that were sent to reviewers.
For me personally, each episode has built on the previous... each getting better. If that continues I can't imagine how good episode 6 could be... or the season finale!
As far as I remember they gave out the first 6 episodes. Episode 3 and 6 were the ones that got the best feedback.
I know what you mean and if I haven't been reading and seeing a lot of articles, interviews, BTS videos and so on, it might have mislead me too. But so I was pretty well prepared on what to expect. Even though I always felt that R.R. Martin's quote that he writes fantasy for people who hate fantasy was kind of stupid, I knew what essentially he was trying to say and what that means for GOT and ASOIAF. But especially in a pilot episode you should add some action and mystery to attach viewers to the show and the producers apparently felt that this was the best way to provide it that way.
Best episode so far by a mile. It's finally got there and I'm very happy with where the show is going... Great characters, the Wall storyline is totally engrossing, Ned is looking like a great character, Tyrion is brilliant... Also really enjoying the Dothraki and Targaryen storyline, I like how Daenerys is developing :)
It's funny, I just read a review that said that this was the weakest episode so far and that if after this episode you are still on board, you're gonna enjoy the show a lot. To me it was clearly the best episode yet. Very character driven and without interesting and well developed characters a show just isn't very interesting.
I think the divide is people that want action or shocking moments... and people who like well done, well acted quality TV that developes the characters. This one did not have the big shock at the end of the episode.
I think they have gotten better as a series. The transitions from one scene to the next seem to flow better and make sense now. They seem to have found a rhythm....
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteYeah Their list and categories surprised me a couple times. Momoa was one, having Headey as a lead role, and Fairley as a supporting role too.
