My Top 3 Most Anticipated Pilots

Cancelled Shows SpoilerTV Article1. Smash
Steven Spielberg serves as the executive producer for this musical drama about the making of a Broadway show. The comparisons to Glee will be endless but this looks ten times better. It will feature original music from Broadway musical Hairspray's songwriting duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The show also features an all-star Broadway cast, from Christian Boyle, Debra Messing, Megan Hilty and Katharine McPhee. This may be the show that I am most excited about next season. I love anything Broadway and musical theatre, and being able to watch a Broadway production be put together from beginning to end is going to be quite the experience to watch.
2. Pan Am
Starring Christina Ricci and from the creative team that brought you The West Wing comes a 1960's high-flying period drama about the stewardesses and pilots of the Pan Am airlines. I love period dramas and this soapy take on the lives of these pilots and stewardesses looks like an hour of television that is bound to be both exciting and fun to watch. Not to mention, the subplot of an espionage going down in a movie aircraft makes this new ABC drama all the more intriguing.
3. The Playboy Club
This 1960's Chicago-set drama series gives viewers a sexy look at the acclaimed Playboy Club. The cast includes Amber Heard, Jenna Dewan and Eddie Cibrian. I like the whole dark, mysterious, film noir tone the show is presenting and all the scandal and secrets is just what I like in my television shows. Plus, I have loved Amber Heard's work both in television and on the big screen so I look forward to seeing her grace my television screen every week.
Not my top 3 at all. That would be #1 Alcatraz #2 The River #3 Terra Nova.
ReplyDeleteThe River is mid-season as well
ReplyDeleteEddie Cibrian can keep me away from just about any show so I'm not big on TPC. Amber Heard is a good talent though so I hope she continues to seek out television roles if this doesn't work for her.
ReplyDeletePan Am could be decent but I was a bit worried about the lack of Christina Ricci in the upfront presentation video.
Smash could be interesting but I have my doubts about the potential longevity of a series like this.
My top three:
3. Once Upon A Time (the new season's #2 riskiest show behind Terra Nova)
2. Ringer (great cast, loads of mystery and intrigue, film noir + primetime soap = win)
1. Person of Interest (everything about this show wins)
Really? I'm looking forward to Grimm and the Ringer.
ReplyDeleteSmash does look interesting
ReplyDeleteNope, may casually watch pan am, but not my cup of tea at all.
ReplyDeleteSeeing as multiple awards and critical acclaim could not lure me to Mad Men, I guess I just don't like '60s period dramas. I like Cristina Ricci, though. Still, I'll bet I won't be interested in Pan Am.
ReplyDeleteSmash looks like fun. I predict I'll end up watching it whenever it's convenient, but it won't be a "can't miss" like Fringe is for me.
The Playboy Club is set in Chicago, which I like, but so is The Good Wife, which is a thousand times better I'm sure.
hmmm hard for me to rank mine but here are the ones im interested in
ReplyDeletefor midseason :Touch, The River, Awake, Alcatraz AND Scandel
for Fall: Revenge, Charlie's Angels, Grimm, Secret Circle, Ringer
+ maybe CBS dramas, Once Upon a Time and Hart of Dixie (great script but not my kind of thing)
For me is:
ReplyDelete#1 - Awake
#2 - Person of Interest
#3 - Once Upon a Time
I don't get why the networks are holding back some of their more high profile projects for midseason. Midseason launches seem to have a much lower rate of success than fall premieres.
ReplyDelete1. Person of Interest
ReplyDelete2. Alcatraz
3. Awake
4. The Playboy Club
5. Pan Am
It's an odd season for me. Some of the series I am most interested in I do not have high hopes for, and some of the series I have high hopes for I am not veyr interested in oddly.
ReplyDeleteI have high hopes, but low expectations for.
1 - Awake
2 - Once Upon a Time
3 - The River
4 - Grimm
I have High expectations, but low desire to watch...
1 - Smash
2 - Pan Am
3 - X-Factor
I have solid expectations but am not excited for..
1 - Prime Suspect
2 - Missing
3 - Ringer
There really is only one series I think will be a hit and I am looking forward to a lot... Person of Interest. Well one on major network TV... I think Homeland and House of lies will both rock on all levels!
I am interested to see Alcatraz, Terra Nova, and Secret Circle, but I am dubious of them all for some reason.
You're very conflicted. Lol
ReplyDeleteGreat choices, those are 3 dramas I'm eager to see but that's not exactly my top 3.If we're just talking about this fall, then my top 10 (the only 10 dramas I'll check out) is as follows : 1/ The Playboy Club.2/ Ringer.3/ Person of Interest.4/ Terra Nova.5/ Pan Am.6/ Revenge.7/ Prime Suspect.8/ Once Upon a Time.9/ Grimm.10/ Charlie's Angels.
ReplyDeleteIf we're talking about the whole season, then Awake, Smash, Touch, Alcatraz would obviously be in this top 10 :) (and maybe The Firm, The River and Missing if it was a top 15).
Regarding new sitcoms (I include Apt 23 since it'll be on the air in late November, or sooner if one of the two ABC's new sitcoms flops on Tuesdays, which is very likely) :
1/ Apt 23.
2/ Up All Night.3/ Free Agents.4/ Suburgatory.5/ New Girl.6/ How to Be a Gentleman.
I am! It's annoying! Ha!
ReplyDeleteGenerally I have expectations and hopes that coincide, but this year.... not so much.
My top three is:
ReplyDelete3) Smash: I love musicals and Kat Mcphee is in it!
2) The Secret Circle: I love witch shows and this one looks amazing! The cast is awesome and Kevin Williamson is working on this too!
1) Ringer-Sarah Michelle Gellar is awesome and the concept of this show sounds really interesting!
I'm also really looking forward to Alcatraz, Hart of Dixie, Once Upon A Time & Grimm
Awake, Awake and Awake. ;D Smash looks more interesting than expected, the preview was really solid, and I'm definitely gonna watch it when it starts if I don't forget but I'm really exited for NBC's Awake.
ReplyDeletei am so sure Awake will be canceled tho
ReplyDeleteThe first thing that popped into my head when I watched the Awake video was Journeyman. I think these two shows are going to share the same fate. There will be a small group of people who absolutely love the show but not nearly enough to keep it on air.
ReplyDeleteThat's why I like it. ;D And it doesn't need to be a hit, it just needs to find a large enough audience to survive.
ReplyDeleteWow. I agree about everything you mentioned, especially your dubious picks, except for Once Upon A Time (high expectations, low ratings expectations) Ringer (see Once Upon A Time), and Missing (I think it'll straight-up bomb).
ReplyDeleteYes, and in the year 2050 there will be an awesome remake called 'Awake Again' on HBO! ;D
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be surprised if Missing fails either... I just think it could have enough talent and be 'typical enough' to catch enough viewers for it to stay a season or two.
ReplyDeleteWe agree on Once Upon a Time ( or do you not have high expectaions or think it will get better ratings?) and the only reason I put Ringer in the "solid expectations" section is because it is on CW where 2 million viewers and .9 rating can get you to 7 seasons...
For both Ringer and OUaT, I have high expectations creatively but I don't expect either to fair well in the ratings over an extended period of time. ABC has a poor record with high concept and genre projects and I have my doubts about The CW's audience supporting an adult drama. Nikita barely made it to a second season with very sketchy ratings.
ReplyDeleteAh ok.
ReplyDeleteI hold very little interest for Pan am, but since Margot Robbie is in it i'm willing to give it a shot. Awake is at the top of my list for this years pilots, I watched Good Night Sweetheart as a kid and the premise looks similar. Of course Awake will be much Darker and is a drama not a comedy. Fractured reality's never stop fascinating me, I hope it get's a good run.
ReplyDeleteBefore Spoiler TV I didn't know anything, really, about new shows. I turned on TV and watched what was on. Now, I'm all prepared. Nice.
ReplyDelete:)
ReplyDeleteWas it just me or did the pilot presentation of Once Upon A Time look really cheap? I was really rooting for that series and the premise sounded very interesting to me, but after seeing the trailer for it I felt that the costumes and set just made it look like some cheesy Disney Channel Movie or something you'd find on ABC Family. I don't know...maybe it was just me. But the cast is stellar though.
ReplyDeleteI love musicals (and is in dire need of a replacement of "Glee" since that show has such poor writing), and also am fascinated by period dramas hence my 3 choices.
1. Grimm
ReplyDelete2. Once Upon a Time
3. Unforgettable
Can't wait for Playboy Club I still have all the mags from that time period.
