Christopher Meloni will not be reporting back for duty when Law & Order: Special Victims Unit launches its 13th season this fall, TVLine has learned exclusively.
Protracted talks between the actor — who has played Detective Stabler since the NBC crime drama’s 1999 debut — and studio NBC Universal broke down on Tuesday, says a source. Franchise creator Dick Wolf is said to already be searching for a big name to bring in opposite the series’ female lead, Mariska Hargitay.

wow - i really didn't think they'd let that happen...
ReplyDeleteYep, seems a little odd.
ReplyDeleteIIRC, Dick Wolf once threatend to let him walk during their negotiations a couple of years ago. He made a statement to the effect that just about any cast members on any of the L&Os were replaceable.
ReplyDeleteMy reaction to this news is far from appropriate so I'll just say I find the news very upsetting. The show just won't be the same without him.
ReplyDeleteI don't recall anyone driving their car into his dining room. What gives?
ReplyDeleteNBC is going to the shitter, even tough i would love to see Awake survive that`s the only good comming up(pluss ad last season of Chuck).
ReplyDeleteThe channel can pretty much go and die after this big hit.
Thats nuts
ReplyDelete$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
ReplyDeleteSVU became stale years ago. I'm surprised Meloni and Hargitay haven't left before now.
ReplyDeleteIf he leaves, I leave, along with everyone else I know. This would be the end of the show.
ReplyDeleteCan't blame him. 12 years is long enough for any character I'd say. But I think that his dynamic with Mariska Hargitay was always the best of any of the L&O shows...So that sucks. Not that I watch this show anymore...the writing has turned to shit the last 3 years.

ReplyDeletehe isn't leaving. and to be honest if he did I don't think I would watch the show anymore.
That article is over a year old and it's regarding his last contract negotiation with the show, not the current one that just fell through.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad that he didnt get a big finale.
ReplyDeleteI love Mariska Harigtay and the show but I am not sure if I can survive watching without Chris Meloni.
At least they could have given him a big finale - I mean Elliot was/is a great, amazing character. It's something they owe the character and Meloni and the fans.
And I read that Mariska was going to get less screen time halfway trough the season? She was going to get a supervisory position, and they were looking for a new character (said to be Jennifer Love Hewitt). I don't know if this is true, but I read it from multiple sources.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to be true mostly because of the baby she adopted a few weeks back.
ReplyDeleteHonestly said ... SVU without the dreamteam doesnt work for me ... Mariska Hargitay should get a new show, something on her own. It would be the best than trying to fix it with Love Hewitt who may be a good actress but doesnt fit - in my opinion - into this show.
Wat is SVU without the two main characters, really?
ReplyDeleteI don't really like Love Hewitt. Well, not in this genre, not on this show, most definitely. I'm curious as to how this upcoming season will play out but I don't think I'll keep watching. Well, this'll probably be the final season anyway.
is he crazy??
ReplyDeleteNot without Mariska completely but she will be less on scream.
ReplyDeleteOn the one hand we owe it to Mariska to watch it because its wasnt up to her that Meloni leaves *sigh* but on the other he's a selfish bastard *angry me*
Oh no........
ReplyDelete53 million viewers is stale?
ReplyDeleteDOUBT IT
What a shame...But, could Ice-T fill a bigger role? I would like to see Munch get some more air time too; although he's #2 in command of SVU. Could Mariska's character and him switch roles?
ReplyDeleteMy question is...how is that going to be written in? It's not like the finale ended with Elliot on the brink of death or anything. He just had an "OMG did that really just happen" look on his face. It will be interesting to see how they deal with it. I also don't know if the show is really going to survive without the two main leads together as the two main leads...
ReplyDeletethe show just wont have the same chemistry as it did without him, i mean he was the aggressive cop, the one who made the whole chasing the bad guy good.. and i dont think they will be able to find another character who can keep the same chemistry or interest with Mariska as Chris could. thats what i think, i dont know if ill even watch it anymore, i hate when there finally is a show that works so well between all the characters then all of a sudden they change it!!!!
ReplyDeleteLets hope they dont make the same mistake that was made in CSI with Laurence Fishburn as (forgot his name already), replacing William Petersen as Gil Grissom
ReplyDeleteThe show will never be as great without him, I dont think I'll even watch anymore.
ReplyDeleteStabler and Benson make this show!! No two characters have ever been written with more passion, drive, and dedication than them. Chris and Mariska are artists. The series will never be the same and it will be a sad day when it is cancelled, which will be soon.
ReplyDeleteI think the show is great. The last 2 seasons are better then the first. I disagree with wolf. That may be true for the original but it lost its flare when they lost jerry orbach and certainly when sam waterson tappered off the lead role. The stabler - benson and munch- fin dynamics are why the show has lasted so long every time they replace any of them even short term the ratings dropped off. Plus novak and cabbot seem to be the only DA worth watching. The rating always spike when they are back on the show.
ReplyDeleteStabler's leaving, Benson's getting promoted so Mariska only has to work part time, B.D. Wong left, still no regular A.D.A...this show is done.
ReplyDeleteI guess he'll find out the hard way when the show takes a nosedive in ratings.
ReplyDeleteHomophobia?? There is no such thing. Do you mean people with standards who HATE FILTH?
ReplyDeleteWow! No way.. i'll still watch it 4 Olivia but if disappears 2 idk what i'll do
ReplyDeletecant happen. The show cant go on without Elliot
ReplyDeleteSVU is as good right now as it was in 1999, I'd say even a little bit better. I love the show
ReplyDeleteI hope it goes to season 20 cause I really love the show and the characters.
ReplyDeletethat just shows the idiot that work at nbc
