French TV network M6 has bought the Canadian police drama King, which airs here on Showcase (Sundays at 9 p.m.). The show stars Amy Price-Francis (The Cleaner, 24) as Jessica King, the head of Toronto's major crimes task force. "Jessica King is a unique character in the television landscape. She’s a creative thinker who not only celebrates her femininity, she uses it as a disarming investigative tool," said Greg Spottiswood, co-creator of the series, in a news release. "We’re delighted that King translates so well.” M6 is described as the third most-watched TV network in the French-speaking world. The series has also been licensed to the Astral specialty channel Séries+.

  1. It may be airing internationally but not in the US.  I just finished "acquiring" the latest episode 10 minutes ago.

  2. oh thanks for the heads up :) was waiting for it
still i think French pickup should help get it renewed

  3.  Isn't it one of the highest rated Canadian produced dramas?  I figured that would of given it an inside track for renewal given all the fervor in Canada the last few years about importing less American TV and producing more homegrown stuff.

  4. i have no idea what showcase's standards are they dont have that many original series season 2 + only 2 renewed recently were Haven and Lost Girl which did better than King, XIII and Endgame, King is still the highest rated of the three, though XIII has the international co-production factor but i have no idea what kind of ratings it gets in France. Showcase has also never issued a press release on the ratings of any of those three as it did for Haven and Lost Girl

  5.  Oh, okay.  Thanks for the info.  Poor Endgame.  I'm starting to think I'm the only person left that likes and still watches that show.  :)

  7.  I tried to like XIII because I'm a fan of Aisha Tyler but I couldn't get into the show.

  8. M6 is a big channel, indeed, mostly for young people. The channel was created in 1987, so in a way I guess most people of my generation grew up with it since the content of their programing was more oriented towards teenagers. M6 is the first channel that really trusted tv series, it's the 1st french channel that put a TV series on primetime (X-Files in
the 90s) ! Before that, TV shows weren't well perceived and aired only
late in the afternoon or after 10:30pm (sure there were plenty fo made-for-tv movies or miniseries that aired for a limited time on primetime, but no shows with long seasons like X-Files).

And M6 was a great channel. I say 'was' because personnally I liked it better a few years ago when M6 wasn't big, they aired much more sci-fi/fantasy shows : Buffy, Charmed, The 4400, Dead Zone, Smallville and Stargate SG1/Atlantis were on primetime for several years. None of the older channels programmed sci-fi/fantasy shows.

M6 wasn't popular until a few years ago, they never had better ratings
than the older channels until the 1st season of Prison Break in 2006 : it
was hugely popular and the last 6 episodes had better ratings than any
other channel every Thursday night. Since then, this channel went
downhill imo, because they went mainstream, their policy is now like
every other big channel, they have more and more copshows and only a few
fantasy shows left but they're not on primetime anymore.

They had something which is cult for most people of my generation : la trilogie du samedi (Saturday's trilogy), during which they aired 3 episodes of 3 fantasy series from 8:50pm to 11:20pm. It started in 1997 with The Pretender/Dark Skies/Profiler. I'll always remember the stressful theme between the three episodes, the feeling that you're watching something forbidden ( http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xc4jde_generique-la-trilogie-du-samedi_creation )... it makes me nostalgic all of a sudden, brings back memories from the childhood. This concept ended around 2006 I guess.

As for your other quesiton, Tariq, XIII premiered well a month ago : 1.1 million viewers (17% of people who subscribe to Canal+ were watching the first 2 episodes). But XIII isn't a pay-cable channel and doesn't communicate much about its ratings, they didn't since the premiere. Episodes 1.11, 1.12 and 1.13 aired tonight, perhaps Canal+ will deliver some ratings news about it tomorrow.
