- Ratings leader Fox doesn't have a lot of holes in its fall schedule, what with The X Factor taking up a big chunk of real estate and Terra Nova slated (for now) to finally debut. Still, industry insiders expect the network to make room for a couple of new procedural dramas in the vein of the aging House and the dearly departed 24; the Ethan Hawke spy caper Exit Strategy and medical procedural Weekends at Bellevue are mentioned a lot by agents. The trades are hinting that two big sci-fi shows — Alcatraz and Locke and Key — might be in trouble, perhaps because Fox feels it doesn't need another Comic-Con-friendly hour with so-so ratings (see: Fringe). Perhaps, but Locke and Key has long been one of Fox chief Kevin Reilly's pet projects. What's more, we continue to hear scuttlebutt about Terra Nova having production problems. We wouldn't be completely shocked to see the project pushed to mid-season — again. Meanwhile, even though we had pretty much written off sophomore series Human Target, our spies say producers pitched some strong ideas for a third season and that the show may yet have life.
- Over at CBS, agents say the network brass is very happy with how its drama crop turned out, particularly several shows with well-known auspices. The Jonathan Demme–directed medical drama from writer Susannah Grant seems a sure thing; there's also lots of buzz on Robert De Niro's cop hour Rookies as well as Person of Interest, a collaboration between J.J. Abrams and Dark Knight co-writer Jonathan Nolan. The trades continue to claim that the Minnie Driver–led Hail Mary is gaining steam, but we've heard from folks who think it's a long shot. Ditto Sarah Michelle Gellar's Ringer: Despite a flood of support from SMG's Internet armies, one agent told us he's already heard buzz that its producers are trying to shop the show to a cable network. Finally, while there's been industry chatter about the post-Charlie Two and a Half Men reboot being delayed to mid-season, our spies suggest that if the show does return, it will do so in the fall.
- About the only NBC pilot we're willing to bet the farm on is Smash, the musical drama from producers Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, and one Mr. Steven Spielberg. Peacock chief Bob Greenblatt developed the concept at Showtime and brought it to NBC; Spielberg, meanwhile, has been heavily involved in postproduction, our sources indicate. Of course this thing is going on the air. Lots of agents frequently mention REM (the drama by Lone Star's Kyle Killen that we've heard being called Awake in recent days) as a strong contender. We'd also like to go on record with our (potentially silly) theory about Wonder Woman: Since David E. Kelley is likely to get a pickup for Harry's Law, what if NBC were to green-light Kelley's superwoman and announce that a new show-runner was coming onboard Woman so DEK could focus on Harry's? As for the rest of NBC's pickups, the trades suggest a female-centric comedy block could be in the works, with sitcoms produced by Chelsea Handler and Emily Spivey supposedly looking good.
- ABC chief Paul Lee has kept his cards close to his vest since coming to the network last summer, so we're most cautious about predicting what he'll do. However: ABC is in desperate need of new hits and seems likely to order many (perhaps more than ten) new shows to premiere throughout next season. Despite talk of a new family-friendly comedy lineup, one senior agent we trust suggests Lee wants to wait at least a year before reviving TGIF, and only if he can do so with lower-budget sitcoms. There's also growing buzz that ABC may bring back at least one of its several mid-season comedies, with the smart money predicting it'll be Happy Endings. Vulture hears the show's producers have informally starting talking to writers about joining the show for season two; a decision to green-light the hiring of scribes could come this week. (We can already see a scenario by which Happy ends up paired with Cougar Town on Tuesday nights.) As for new shows, given how much trouble Lee went through to land Tim Allen, we can't imagine the exec not giving his pilot a try. The trades also seem to be convinced Charlie's Angels and Good Christian Bitches are definitely moving forward.
- Then there's The CW: Over the weekend, a usually reliable Vulture source told us there's a good shot that the C-Dub could order four new drama projects for next season, doubling last year's green-light of just two dramas. Two pilots we keep hearing good things about are Magnum ice-cream spokeswoman Rachel Bilson's fish-out-of-water dramedy Hart of Dixie (from exec producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage) and the witch-themed Secret Circle (produced by the studio that brought you Vampire Diaries). With Smallville ending and Hellcats considered all but dead, the CW may only have two openings on its fall lineup (assuming both One Tree Hill and Nikita earn seasons). By ordering four series, incoming chief Mark Pedowitz may signal that he's ready to tackle one of the CW's biggest problems, namely those long stretches of the season where the network airs nothing but repeats.

ReplyDeleteThank you! This makes my day!
Seems like Nikita and Human Target may get a next season - hooray!
ReplyDeleteDoesn't the CW have 3 slots open. Tuesdays at 9pm, Wednesday at 9pm and Friday at 8pm. Isn't that 3 timeslots available. One show must be for midseason.
ReplyDeleteGreat info! Thanks..
ReplyDeleteI am not surprised by TerrNova issues. It looked doomed from the get go to me. Like it was trying to be serious drama and didn't realize it was a comical as that series Lost World from years ago. Awesome to hear Human Target may have life. I think if nothing else they could do a 13 episode Summer run.
yeah could be timeslot share like LUX did with Gossip Girl and OTH season 1 it never technically had its own timeslot just replaced repeats
ReplyDeleteSoooo.... if Human Target can get another season after being written off by so many, how about TheEvent?
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty gutted about Alcatraz... Sam Neill and Jorge Garcia... Parminda Nagra... :(
ReplyDeleteHurray for Human Target ! Season 2 was a solid entertainment, a thousand times better than season 1.
ReplyDeleteAlcatraz, Locke & Key, Terra Nova : fantasy/sci-fi powa, I love that, but I have the feeling only 1 of these 3 shows will air, and it might not be Terra Nova despite (supposedly) being in production. At least there's Fringe to lead the way, and Touch (apparently it's a lock for this January) will be a drama with fantasy bits.
I like the new title of REM, Awake.
The only reason I look forward to the female centric-comedy block is this : NBC will have to program returning sitcoms among their new sitcoms, say 50/50. And what are the current sitcoms with women as stars ? Parks and Recreation and 30 Rock. Here's an example :
Tuesdays : Parks and Rec at 8pm, Chelsea Handler at 8:30pm, 30 Rock at 9pm and Emily Spivey at 9:30pm.
Thursdays : Community at 8pm, x at 8:30pm, The Office at 9pm and x at 9:30pm.
What could NBC possibibly air at 8:30pm and 9:30pm on Thursdays ?
I have the answer : Outsourced season 2 (plus a new sitcom, or whatever they want). They have a great sitcom suffering from its current 10:30 timeslot (it's still not very bad given 30 Rock numbers I think), it's better to add just 1 new show in a comedy block thus Community, Outsourced, The Office and new sitcom might be a great combinaison on Thursdays.
Their female centric-comedy block might just give Outsourced a 2nd season, so I say go for it, NBC.
Nikita MUST get a second season.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, if Human Target is renewed I'd be genuinely shocked; pleased but shocked. Now onto the CW:
ReplyDeleteI think the network has the right idea by expanding thier order of scripted programming but this may not be the year to do it. Their pilots, besides Hart of Dixie and Secret Circle, don't seem very strong.
Ideally, I think the CW should give 13 episode orders to a few new dramas and take a play from USA's playbook by running them during the winter hiatus when everybody, not just the CW, is airing repeats.
Ideal CW 2011-12. RT 2 #CW if u agree. Mon:Nikita/SPN, Tues: Awakening/HC, Wed: ANTM/GG, Thurs: TVD/SC,Fri: OTH(13 epi)/Dixie (spring)/90210
ReplyDeleteInteresting and a great idea Bruce. I think my schedule is good bec they wouldn't have to cancel any show and OTH will not be drag on bec they will have a ninth season with 13 episodes and not 22. Also CW should realize that their reality shows are stupid and never last more than a seson so they should just pair ANTM with GG.
ReplyDeleteNikita needs to get a 2nd season! CW should definitely renew it!
ReplyDeleteMy Intrest for Next season Is V coming back. With Smallville ending and The Event almost certainly cancled My Intrest Is on that and rather Nikita gets a second season.Besides The Simpsons and The Vampire Diaries I don't have much to watch. If WOnder Woman gets picked up they need a showrunner who actully knows Comics and Wonder woman.
ReplyDeleteReality shows are profitable, regardless of their entertainment value. For a network like The CW, a network that's always operating in the red, reality programming will always be attractive because those shows will pad their bottom line. I expect The CW to keep fishing into the reality waters, no matter how incredibly bad at it they are.
ReplyDeleteThe guy who created The Cape for NBC was a big comic fan so be careful what you wish for.
ReplyDeleteNikita must get renewed. MUST GET RENEWED.
ReplyDeleteWow, caught the new preview video while at work and I have only to words . . . HIGH OCTANE!
ReplyDeleteI don’t understand why CW is taking forever to renew this incredible show. Currently, there isn’t another show on air that is action packed and fast paced as Nikita and mind you, a lead female actress that actually DOES her own fighting stunts. Amazingly, the show has been consistently getting rave reviews from critics alike. It is a shame that CW does not realize they have a platinum quality show such as Nikita. I will be remiss if Nikita isn’t picked up for season two and if that is the case then, I would hope other stations have an eye to scoop up Nikita and give it the love IT truly deserve.
Oh and another thing... does CW think EVERYONE has a Nielsen Rating box at home? Seriously? For of all, to judge ratings according to the boxes is in my opinion is an unfair assessment because it doesn't count the homes who does actually watch Nikita! So, if CW decision is based on the damn boxes, well then... it's just ******ed up. I’m just sayin . . .
Human Target? No, please. Fox has to renew Lie to Me.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I like Human Target and Lie To Me but The Chicago Code deserves a pick-up more than both of those shows based on creative quality alone.
ReplyDeleteIt would of been great to see Parminder Nagra onscreen again.
ReplyDeleteyeah i know! and it also doesnt count downloads.... there is a MASSIVE amount of people who download regularly there r around 2000 on the site i go to and thats within the first 2/3 hours of release!
ReplyDeleteWhat about Lie To Me? I thought it had more life than Human Target at this point??
ReplyDeleteHellcats all but dead, huh? But...but...Alyson Michalka...damnit.
ReplyDeleteBut good news about a potential Human Target renewal. Now just give me Lie To Me and I'll be happy.
Still...damnit! I need new eyecandy.
Maybe they can find a role for Michalka on a show like Californication.
ReplyDeleteI think Wonder Woman is doomed, but if it has any chance it will be to show a side that the comic never did.
ReplyDeleteI hope at least one or two of the new seasons pilot hero shows catches on. I like the genre,
Alphas will make it to air for sure, but it seems to be mixed at best for most of them.
Worst pilot of the season The Cape was. Maybe second worst after Undercovers.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think for a hero show to have any chance on major network TV it needs to go beyond the comic book and be grounded in the real world. That may mean NOT having a comic book lover as showrunner ... dunno.
I'd really rather they didn't. If I ever have a daughter someday, most the women on that show would serve as an example of what I don't want her to become.
ReplyDeleteI'm optimistic about Powers on FX for, more or less, the reason you mentioned. The focus of the show are two normal human detectives and people with superpowers are just supporting characters.
ReplyDeleteWith the exception of Smallville, it seems that the success of a comic-based genre show is inversely proportioned to how over-the-top it is.
Heh. Most? I can't think of one who isn't a bad example. But hey, you wanted eye candy...
ReplyDeleteThere are plenty of ways to do that without joining a cast of females who represent the worst collection of cliche's on the planet. ;)
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, while I wholeheartedly agree about the portrayal of women on Californication, I singled the show out because the roles for women aren't very demanding of acting skills and Michalka isn't exactly a future Emmy winner. It could be worse, after all. She could end up on Entourage. :)
ReplyDeleteOne could easily argue that Smallville's success was because it went away from the typical comic book hero formula . It was more about growing up in general than growing up with special powers specifically.
ReplyDeleteThank God that show is coming to an end. I find it amusing that the only female character not represented poorly on that show was Sasha Grey, an ex-pornstar,
ReplyDeleteI always attributed much of Smallville's success to the fact that it started as a teen drama and teen dramas can get away with a lot more than dramas aimed at adults.
ReplyDeletePfft.
ReplyDeleteCalifornication's male lead (and it's only other regular male) don't exactly represent the best cliche's of men, either.
a big yay for Human Target. But Fox has to do a big promotion of the show in order to get its ratings high up, 'cause I think they underestimated it a bit. Too bad for Locke & Key and Alcatraz. But since Fringe got a renewal, they could do something like sci-fi Fridays and promote it this way. I know, the rating are always a problem, but it doesn't hurt trying. All the shows that the networks are preparing look great. I just hope that those that won't be picked up for the high season will be aired during summer. But yet, wishful thinking, I guess.
ReplyDeleteI highly doubt Human Target will be renewed. From all other sources it's as good as cancelled.
ReplyDeleteHmm Lie to Me was the only show out of those on the FOX bubble, that gained momentum as it came to end, and
that's
with out having Idol as a lead in or a mass promo
campaign behind it
. If Fox
actually
promoted the show even just a little and
stopped
moving it around the LTM could finally gain some stability and
increase
its
audience
. The
Chicago
Code (imo) is just another cop show.
Interesting pairings! I do, as much as I hate to say it, think that Supernatural is better off in its Friday position, since it'll have the best chance at surviving there. Like Fringe, SPN worked well enough on Friday to renew, so I like it there for that reason.
ReplyDeleteGutted about Hellcats. :(
ReplyDeleteAs long as Nikita gets another season I'll be happy!
ReplyDeleteYeah Bradley you're right. SPN has done well in its Friday slot, so the CW is unlikely to move it from that spot. If Nikita is renewed (it better be), it will likely join SPN there.I'm biased for the Mon SPN/.NIkita pairing because I would rather watch Nikita earlier than Fri! I just don't feel that GG and 90210 deserve that Mon slot because they aren't pulling in enough ratings, but it's on the CW and all of their shows have sucky ratings compared to other networks anyway. I like my schedule because nothing gets cancelled and OTH doesn't drag its storylines because they got a 22 episodes full pickup, but 13.
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad. Didn't think of that way. Well if that's the case, the CW needs to fish around for more interesting reality shows because Farmer Wants a Wife (terrible idea) and Shredding the Wedding (copy cat of Big Loser and VH1 Bridal Bootcamp) never caught on with fans. I think the CW should stick to dramas and be different. Besides ANTM, all of their reality shows fail. If they do reality, they should stick to music based shows like Girlicious. Glee is so popular, so a singing competition would some twist would probably catch on better.VH1 had success would a love competition shows so those too could pull in some viewers. To me, reality hasn't been working, so spend time building up the shows you do have and do simple things like posting their episodes online earlier. (THE CW SHOULD NOT WAIT FOUR DAYS TO POST THEIR EPISODES ONLINE-SORRY HAD TO ADVERTISE MY FB PAGE).
ReplyDeleteI don't care about anything but Nikita. Just renew Nikita advertise the hell out of it and the new shows to boost ratings for CW and I'm pleased.
ReplyDeletei want locke and key on any channel nbc cw cbs just have locke and key i can can care less if you renew nikita or one tree hill i never watched those shows anyway
ReplyDeletewould love to have season three of Human Target! :D
