Pirates, sirens and eye patch lady again… oh my!
It’s foggy, there’s a pirate ship and some very gruff talking pirates. One of them has been injured. He has the tiniest cut but, as the Captain so rightly points out, he’s dead. There’s some lovely singing and then the man disappears. Oh and did I mention he has a black spot on his hand… probably should have. Then the Doctor is there. Cue titles.
There’s plenty of talk of how the Doctor and Co. got there and the Doctor really hams up the pirate stereotypes before Amy pops up to save the day. Even the Captain puts down his gun and then some dramatic wannabe Shakespearean profoundly announces that she has killed him. He gets a black spot and lo and behold so does Rory. Uh oh.
The Doctor also drops a couple of notes foreboding his death and Rory and Amy give each other worried, knowing looks. Rory flirts with Amy, then with Lily Cole. Amy tries to stop it and Lily turns red. I think she’s unhappy.
Other events of note include a stowaway son with a fever, Amy being jealous of Rory saying something while under the influence of Siren and a pirate in the Tardis (which incidentally goes a bit out of control and runs away.)
Whilst not my favourite of the three I must say I love it when the Doctor gets things wrong. First he thinks one thing but then she pops out of water and then it’s reflections and then of course she’s actually just a friendly computer Doctor who is trying to make everything better just in a really roundabout kind of way.
Then they all decided to let the Siren “kill” them and they better hope the Doctor has it right. There’s some talk of alien bogies and then Rory, not for the last time I imagine, almost dies once again. Add to that the very interesting bit where Amy stands up for Rory and demands the computer Doctor Siren lets her look after him and I think the Greek tragedy is set. Mark my words. This series may just make you weep (I’m guessing). Amy saves his life while the Doctor looks on helpless and then we all start to consider what The Doctor’s Wife might actually be about.
Matt Smith is once again marvellous. He’s growing more and more in the role and I love the balance of light and dark and especially the weary. He, the Doctor, seems so tired. It’s almost heartbreaking… but I think that heartbreak is yet to come. It’s not my favourite ep and I doubt it ever will be but quite often you find that when the plot isn’t the best the personal scenes between characters really shine through. I think this might just be one of these.
And I’d totally watch a Doctor Who Pirates in Space as set up by the final scenes. Oh, and the Tardis still can’t tell if she’s pregnant.

Irrespective of all the emotional personal things it has to be The Doctor breathing on the medal in only a way that Matt Smith could.
