Breaking Bad - Vince Gilligan - Hints to Season 5 being the last [Video]

Thanks to Bunky Bunk for sending us the following.

Here is an interview from Breaking Bad creator, executive producer and writer Vince Gilligan.

It took place in Paris a month ago, as a part of an event called the 'festival Séries mania'.

This 71 minute interview isn't just about Breaking Bad, it's also about the rest of Vince Gilligan's career (his writing debut on X-Files for instance). He talks about his influences and motivations on Breaking Bad. Gilligan is very interesting to listen to.

Vince Gilligan doesn't give away spoilers about the 4th season of Breaking Bad aside from saying the show (and Walter) will get darker, even if they still try to include humor whenever they have the possibility to do so.

Gilligan also hints about a possible ending of Breaking Bad at the end of the 5th season. It's definitely not a sure thing but for now, it seems he's inclined to end Breaking Bad in 2012.

  1. To be honest, I don't see the show going any further than season 5. Walter & Jesse are now up against this huge drug boss and I can't imagine with what they'd come up if the show goes further than season 5. Better end it there on high note.

  2. Oups, sorry, silly mistake.

What's interesting is that at some point in the video, Vince Gilligan compares Walter White to Scarface. Maybe it gives us some indications on how the show will develop from now on.

For the first three seasons, Walt wasn't much of a criminal but in the meantime he started to understand the rules of this world he's into and he climbed the ladder. A lot has happened between the moment when he was meeting Tuco in a junkyard to sell him a bag of meth and the moment when he's gaining leverage on Gus and Mike by making Jesse kill Gabe in order to become unexpendable.

Maybe Walt will reach his peek into criminity this season (it would concur to what Gilligan said about the 4th season being the darkest) but then the ladder will start to fall down at the end of the season and the 5th season would really depicts his downfall.

I don't see Walt seeking for a way out, he's stuck in the spiral now. I think eventuelaly he will end up badly (not dead though) but that won't be because of other people, it's his own actions that are driving him into the wall, but so far he doesn't see it, he's just gaining speed on the highway (yeah I know, I like metaphores, after the ladder here's the highway).

And to come back to Scarface, maybe while he'll be in his downfall in season 5, Walt will take meth, and maybe he'll even shoot every cop on his frontdoor with a rifle... that might be too much.

Anyway, whether there's a 6th season or not, I seriously don't see how this show will get bad. I think Gilligan knows what he's doing, he has great idea and a grea approach, I completely trust him to finish the series the way it's supposed to, and AMC isn't a channel that will stop him on this creative aspect, so we just have to enjoy the ride.

  3. MY heart screams "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" , but my mind agrees. Not the type of series that should go on forever just because it is one of the best on TV.

  4. Noticed it to, but can't change other people's posts. Maybe DarkUFO can change it.

  5. Still haven't found the time to watch the clip, it's a pretty long one. Hope to find those 70 minutes in my day tomorrow.

But I'm rather convinced the show will end with its 5th season. I read other interviews with Gilligan saying that he didn't expect the show going on this long and it's going to be hard to top season 3.

I think season 3 was about Walt accepting his criminal life. Before he always calculated how much money he needs until he can stop cooking, but with the ending of the last season he pretty much sealed his faith. He's way too intelligent to think there's still a way out for him. But I think it'll have serious repercussions on his family. What's stopping Gus to hurt Skyler, Walter junior or baby Holly? I think he's going to use them to put pressure on Walt.

Man, can't wait for the premiere...

  6. I think it would be just fine to end the show within two years for now. Totally agree with Matt50, just like LOST it can't and shouldn't run for more than 5/6 seasons.

  7. indeed. and I can't imagine how awesome would the series finalé be, given that BrBa has only gotten better and better by season and would probably hit their high-note in season 5. Damn, I cant wait for season 4 premiere anymore!

  8. Awesome interview, worth watching every minute of it. And that's coming from a guy who often is extremely impatient when it comes down to such things...

They talked about some very interesting things and I'm excited to see how this will work out. Also very interesting to hear that Breaking Bad almost didn't get made and that every cable network rejected it. But I guess we have to thank FX for at least ordering the script for the pilot that made AMC interested in it.

  9. I like Vince Gilligan. He's so interesting to listen to and has this pleasant calm voice. I hope after BrBa finishes up, he gets to do another great show on cable.

  13. Love it, Walt is not to dark, he helps and cares
about family and Jessie. Things went from bad to worse for Walt, however I see
him as a person that had the worst circumstances and he found a business plan to
get out of his situation and save his family, however it was illegal and there
was the twist to the dark side. Walt keeps trying to get out of the dark and yet
doesn't quite make it. He didn't expect to live and he was under this extreme
pressure to make money fast to save his family and his pride, he was not going
to take money or charity from anyone. It does not glamorize drugs or the dealing
of them at all. That keeps it real for me. It is not made a desirable business
    to be in..

  14. I would like to see Breaking Bad last longer then most shows.  This show is proclaiming concerning a global issue, inclining to end it after the show acquired so many viewers to make it successful should be worth continuing.   There are not many shows I watch on television anymore because they don't attract my attention such as Breaking Bad, The X-Files, &  Californication, Grey's Anatomy.  Brian Cranston and Aaron Paul are superb in their roles as David Duchovny, The cast of Grey's are fantastic in their roles.
Vince Gilligan you are an unique writer and I respect your decision. Your show is making a difference to me.

  15. I wouldn't think too much of this. Although I do think Season 5 may be it's last but this isn't new It's only a consideration. His original intent to stop the series was at season 4 not 3 as he says. It's his own prediction that it will end on the fifth. But come now,

Whether It's a season 5 or 6 I don't think he would be gilling the lilly so to say with a sixth the writters will find a way and this show will still stay gold. no worries about anything fans

Here's another video saying that Bryan Cranston the shows star tell Vince Gilligan that he thinks it could be a 6 year run (6 seasons)

  18. Good. Breaking Bad, like Lost, can't--or shouldn't--run forever, so I'm glad they're aware of it. With Mad Men, it's not much of a problem to have six or seven (whatever it will be) high quality seasons, but Breaking Bad should end sooner rather than later.
