After narrowing its development field to six scripts, which had been undergoing thorough evaluation for the past two months, AMC ultimately decided not to pick up any of them to pilot at this time. This does not mean that all six projects are dead. I hear that two of them, The Voyage and an untitled racing project, will remain in contention and are expected to be redeveloped. Space epic Voyage, from writer/executive producer John Shiban and executive producer Lynda Obst, is described as a grounded look at human beings' first contact with extraterrestrial life seen through the eyes of an ambitious female scientist and her team at Jet Propulsion Laboratories. Sony TV is producing.
Voyage, the racing project and four other scripts -- The Man With the Golden Ears, The 4th Estate, The Wreck and American Made -- took part in the network's annual pilot script "bake-off" in early March, in which they faced off in a series of elaborate presentations, with the producing team for each project showing a promo reel and each creator pitching in detail the series beyond the pilot, including mapping out the first season. After examining each presentation, I hear AMC brass determined that none of the six scripts were ready to go to pilot at this time. AMC has been very selective in its pilot orders as 100% of them have gone to pilot so far: Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Rubicon, The Walking Dead (straight to series), The Killing and the upcoming Hell On Wheels.

Interesting move, but I guess that's one of the reasons AMC's shows are all just awesome, they only order shows that sound good enough for them. So far I only knew about Voyage, The Man With the Golden Ears & The 4th Estate. Haven't been able to find any info on the 3 projects from the bake-off and I'm kind of surprised to hear that one of those "other" projects is still in consideration for the future. Nevertheless a racing drama done right could be very interesting.
ReplyDeleteBut Voyage, The Man With the Golden Ears & The 4th Estate didn't sound as exciting as Breaking Bad, The Killing or The Walking Dead are.
For those interested, I got some info on "The Wreck" and "American Made".
ReplyDeleteThe Wreck has been near a deal almost a year ago. It's by The Blind Side director and writer John Lee Hancock and also is about American football. The show specifically revolves around a legendary coach at a Southern
college, whose winning ways have ended, as his team just finished a
losing season. Despite his impressive history, the coach is then given
one season to turn to the team around, or get ousted from his head
coaching position.
While I usually enjoy such dramas, it's not exactly something new. As a hockey fan, I'd like to see a well made hockey drama series for once.
Couldn't find a lot of info about American Made. It's a project linked to AMC since 2007. Executive Producers would have been Adam Glass, Bob Cooper and Orin Woinsky, but that was back 4 years ago, so I'm rather sure the team has changed by now.
Stickoxydal Thanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteGO HABS GO!
ReplyDeleteThe Wreck sounds like Friday Night Lights.
ReplyDeleteHa, I like you!
ReplyDeleteHabs put up a good fight against the Bruins. At least they make it to the play-offs regularly. As an Avs fan I have to suffer right now.
Lol, but you guys have done well until the last few years or so. It'll pick up (it always does). I think we've lost in the quarter finals to the Bruins in Game 7 three years in a row now XD.
ReplyDeleteIt's been a while since the last cup for the Habs, last Avs cup was "just" 10 years ago. Let's hope for better times for both of our teams.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to AMC series so I am a wee bit disappointed, but I respect their decision to not put any inferior pilots on their network. Kudos.
