27 Apr 2011

So I decided to try and make a poll for the first time. Think this is a pretty good questison. Vote and comment!

  1. Sorry, I only put Alt-universes here. Time Travels will be on the next one ^^

  2. Oh gosh! I have no clue. It's a tie between "What Is And What Should Never Be", "Changing Channels" and "The French Mistake". They all are in my "favourite episodes ever" group!

  3. What Is And What Should Never Be!

  4. The End is the alt-future that happens when Dean didn't call Sam to talk to him again, but he actually did so "The End" should be on the list as it is an alt-universe. Don't you think so?

  5. Hhmmmmmm....this is a tough one.
I love WIAWSNB AND Changing Channels AND The French Mistake.....be back later.
    I need to think..................
    (this could take a while)

  6. But Dean is sent to the future, so it's more of a time-travel ep, like In The Beginning and Frontierland, in my opinion. If it would've shown a present alt-universe where he didn't call Sam, I would've included it, get it?

  7. I'm a French Mistake gal myself - but only just, My heart Will Go On, Changing Channels, and It's a Terrible Life awesome - Not huge on What Is - only because of what they had Dean as seemed like a lowly good for nothing criminal type so didn't like that much at all.

  8. Let's agree in that he's sent to a future alt-universe... or should we wait till 2014 to see if "we will always end up here" so there's no possibility of any future alt-universes and therefore you'll be right? :P

  9. but "In the Beginning" and "Frontierland" things couldn't be changed whereas in "The End" the future could be changed which if changed (which it was) then becomes an alternate universe.

  10. I am willing to endure Supernatural until 2014 to know for sure...!
    ; )

  11. "What Is And What Should Never Be" is an amazing episode, but I'll choose between "Changing Channels" and "The French Mistake",cause I liked seeing both brothers dealing with the alt-universe thing!
I'll go with "The French Mistake"!
"Changing Channels" was awesome as well, but my favorite scene of the episode is the confrontation with Gabriel, which takes place in our universe, where in "The French Mistake" the majority of my favorite scenes takes place in the alt-universe..Yes,that's how far I have to go in order to decide!

  12. Where's "The End" and "Mystery Spot"? Those both featured alternate futures which makes them qualify as alternate universe episodes.

And why is "It's a Terrible Life" up there? It was not an alternate universe. It was just a brainwashed Sam and Dean in their normal universe.

Had to give it to Changing Channels though. The French Mistake might have been better the first time through (still not sure about that though), but Changing Channels holds up better upon repeat viewings, IMO.

  13. This is what I was thinking too when I first saw the topic listing. However, my favorite is always What Is and What Should Never Be so that's the one I vote for.

We are doing a Twitterfest with The End today to celebrate the fact that it is NOT the end of Supernatural. Yeah, season 7.

  14. was very hard for my to choose b/w changing channels and the french mistake
while i absolutely loved changing channels and it is close up the list of my most watched episodes, the french mistake was pure awesomeness. i loved every second of it and i juist know that i will watch it a bazillion more times
also loved what is and what should never be but i didnt love the actual alternate universe enough to vote for it, i just love that episode

  15. Well since What is and what should never be is my fav of all... its obviously my fav here LOL! But WOW its a terrible life is like... I WANT A FANFIC NOW material, its great. its the most AU imo. French mistake is the funniest sorry changing channels but WOW.

  16. They weren't brainwashed. Zachariah altered their memories to make them think their lives were different, that makes it an alternate universe.

  17. What Is And What Should Never Be.

Changing Channels and The French Mistake were both excellent comedic episodes, though.

  18. Altered memories is the same thing as being brainwashed. I understand when you hear "brainwashed" you normally think, "mind completely erased", but "original thoughts replaced with manufactured thoughts" is another definition of brainwashing.

So while the episode was originally presented as an alternate universe, it was revealed at the end to not be an alternate universe at all. It was the real universe, but the brothers had just been brainwashed (using the "altered" definition, not the "erased" definition). Because the audience wasn't told that it was the same universe as always until the end, we were led to believe that it was an alternate universe, but the twist at the end revealed that it was never an alternate universe at all.

  19. Changing channels was most fun... but What Is And What Should Never Be was the best

  20. The competition was between "Changing Channels" and "My hear will go on"... "Changing Channels" win:P Gabriel ruls!!!

  21. If Changing Channels counts as multiple AUs, then so would Mystery Spot - same trickster, same deal with playing with reality. And I agree that The End is just as qualified for AU as It's A Terrible Life. Both those realities had the same manipulator; granted The End also had two Deans. That had to be the weirdest thing SPN did in the fifth season...

I voted for Changing Channels. Just because it's the one that stood out the most and the one I remembered loving the most of all.

  22. I'm not going to enter into the discussion over which episodes count and which don't.

I like all the episodes, but as I said earlier my top 3 are WIAWSNB, Changing Channels and The French Mistake.
I loved WIAWSNB because we got a glimpse of the kind of life Dean (thought at the time) he wanted for himself and his family. That in the end he chose to let it go because it wasn't real, is testament to his strength.
I loved Changing Channels because it was laugh out loud funny. 'Where'd you get the holy oil?' 'You might say we pulled it out of Sam's ass'. Cracks me up every time. And I love Gabe/Trickster.
I loved The French Mistake a) because it was laugh out loud funny, and b) it's a classic example of Supernatural's ability to push boundaries - in this case pulverise them beyond all recognition.

All 3 episodes advanced the storyline to some degree.

    So I'm going with......uuuummmmmmm.......
Changing Channels - not just because it was funny, but in my opinion it was a turning point in the boys' relationship with Gabe. I believe it was after this he began to understand just where the boys were coming from, and to lean toward taking the side of the humans - which is where he ended up by the end of Hammer of the Gods. So. Yeah. Don't know if that makes much sense to anyone else, but I know what I mean :)

Polls are difficult to put together - getting everything just right is tricky - thanks Matan for this :)
Just a suggestion: how about saving these for the hellatus when we're all desperate for something Supernatural related to get us through the days, weeks and months of waiting?

  23. I chose WIAWSNB, as well! It's just so...perfect, for a lack of better words.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I chose What is and What Should Never Be as my my favorite. The others are all good, but WIAWSNB will always be the best one in my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Changing Channels. Because Gabriel. And Dr. Sexy, MD. And Kitt!Sam. And the procedural cop show. And...

    ReplyDelete
  26. I can't stop the feeling that "The End" should be here, but I guess it's really hard to define if it's just future or alternate universe. I get the reasoning why it's not here.

Voted for Changing Channels, second would be 'It's a Terrible Life' (
I just love corporate-Dean and IT Sam :D) and third is 'What is and what should never be'.

  27. So difficult. These episodes are all really good. For me it's a tie between Changing Channels and The French Mistake. They are just so original and hilarious. I laughed so hard when I saw them and still do. What Is And What Should Never Be is really close behind too.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I did not vote because most of them were good or very good, but I would have to say that It's A Terrible Life was my least favorite of them all.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think WiaWSNB is a brilliant episode, but it is definitely not my favorite... it is just too darn depressing to me. The French Mistake was fabulous and I love it to pieces, but how can I compare it to Changing Channels.... Gosh I love both.... Arrrrgh!

But, about the debate about whether something is Time Travel related or not... I definitely feel that The End, Song Remains the Same, and Frontierland are Time Travel episodes... but in my opinion, My Heart Will Go On is definitely in that category as well.... And It's a Terrible Life kind could be considered to be in that category. The guys were put into a world that they didn't know, but they thought they belonged, so alternate universe works... but also their minds were manipulated like they had lived a different life, so it is kind of like a time travel (but not really).

If you want to talk alternate Universes, maybe Heaven should be included and how about having the Fairies playing with people. That was in this universe, but they were from another realm... and it was definitely a "weird" episode...

I'm not complaining about the poll, just saying that some of these episodes are hard to categorize. I love this show!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I absolutely loved Changing Channels, but The French Mistake was at a close second :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Too difficult!!! What Is and What Should Never Be has always been on my favourite episode list, I think there is no single person who didn't love the episode. But then The French Mistake was such a masterpiece... it's still fresh and doesn't bring such great memories as WIAWSNB, but it's still top-class. I really don't know!!!

I guess if it was just about which episode was better, I'd go with WIaWSNB. But in terms of the alternate universe they created... breaking the fourth wall FTW!! ;)

  32. For me it has to be "What Is and What Should Never Be" - it was heartbreaking because Dean wanted such simple things and that episode laid out that he can never have them.
