One Tree Hill - Season 9 given go-ahead?

26 Apr 2011

One Tree Hill stars Sophia Bush, Bethany Joy Galeotti and Austin Nichols have signed on for a possible ninth season, a network rep confirms.

The trio joins cast mates Robert Buckley, Jana Kramer and Lisa Goldstein, who have already signed on for another year. The long-running CW drama has yet to be renewed, but this latest contract news makes a Season 9 look like more of a possibility.

"Well faithful followers," Bush tweeted late Monday. "I am officially in for ONE last year of OTH. The writers have GREAT plans! Now all we need is a CW pick up!"

Bush and Galeotti are two of the series' last three remaining original cast mates. Galeotti's on-screen husband, James Lafferty, is expected to return part-time if the series is picked up, according to TVLine.

  1. please put this show out of it's misery already.

  2. Considering the only thing that made renewal a question was if the actors still wanted to do it, One Tree Hill might as well be put in the renewed for all intents and purposes list.

  3. I'd like to see some documentation on that. It doesn't sound right. OTH is old, expensive, and perennially treading water in the ratings.

  4. So how many shows will they cancel and how many new ones will they pick up??
No offense to whoever still likes OTH,I used to watch it as well 3-4 years ago,but I really can't believe it's still airing...In my opinion, they should have given it a final season like Smallville and move on!

  5. James is only expected to return part time? ....

  6. OTH may be old and dare I say creatively crippled, but it still beats Hellcats, Gossip Girl, 90210, and even Nikita in the ratings. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's the CW's 4th best scripted show at this point. Since the CW already has to replace Smallville and Life Unexpected for next year, there is no way OTH will be cancelled if the actors agree to another season. It's highly unlikely the CW has the ability to launch 3 new shows. It's impossible that they would try to launch 7.

  7. Two CW shows are already not returning - Smallville and Life Unexpected. If they cancel another show, it's likely to be Hellcats which is getting by far the worst ratings. Since the CW is such a small netlet with such a small budget, I wouldn't think they could afford the publicity it would take to launch 3 or more new shows. My guess is that since Smallville was successful with the year-long publicized finale, they will do the same thing with One Tree Hill next year.

  8. Gossip Girl, 90210, TVD, and Supernatural have all been renewed. I expect Hellcats to get canceled and I believe Nikita will be renewed. That leaves 4 spots open if you don't re-up OTH. The CW could easily just put in more reality programming instead of renewing the show.

  9. Yep, I think you've hit the nail on the head.

  10. Thanks for the info!
Based on what you just said,my guess is that they'll get something to replace Smallville and LU,renew everything else and maybe give Hellcats half a season..If it doesn't do better by then, they'll replace it with Secret Circle.I read that it's not ready yet,but I would be surprised if they didn't give it a chance..Especially with Vampire Diaries doing so well.

  11. I think that's wishful thinking on your part. My bet, everything gets renewed except maybe Hellcats and my guess is tonight's numbers will determine that. Next year all bets are off though because there will be a new head of the CW.

  12. You're more optimistic about Hellcats that I am, then. I've watched every episode hoping it would get better but it hasn't and the ratings are just too low. I believe they're actually worse than Life Unexpected at this point. It's a shame, really. The show had put all the right pieces together except for the awful, awful writing.

As for my "wishful thinking", that implies that I'm somehow rooting against OTH and I'm not. I may not like the show but I don't wish it any ill will either. I just don't believe that The CW is in a position where they NEED to renew OTH. Financially, it probably makes more sense not to.

  13. I'm not optimistic about Hellcats at all. I think tonight's ratings will be the death knoll for it. It's sunk so low that even on the CW it's a failure.

  14. If Nikita gets canned so OTH can have it's billionth horrid season, I swear to God, I'm going to need to find a clock tower.

I'm still bitter about CW choosing it over Everwood.

  15. Is there any truth to Chad agreeing to maybe do a few episodes next season? I've read a few comments about that but have never seen anything official.

  16. The CW chose 7th Heaven over Everwood, not OTH.

  17. The Secret Circle pilot just wasn't ready to be viewed yet...but I'm sure it will be and I'm sure it'll get a pick up.

  18. normally i'd say no to a season 9 just because i think it's been enough (don't get me wrong, i love this show but it's just not what it used to be) but if they commit from the beginning to making it the final season and add a lot of flashbacks and bring some old characters back throughout the season, then i'd be ok with it
just no more storylines like the one where they were superhero's, that was just terrible

  19. Not that I don't agree that 8/9 years is plenty long enough for a show like One Tree Hill, I do firmly (as a fan of the show) believe that it needs a 9th season and for that to be it's last, and to really give it a great going out. It does however get on my nervous severely when people who either "used" to watch the show, claim that it's not what it used to be. All I have to say about that is of course it's not. It "used" to be a teen drama, now it's just a regular drama. They are all grown up, have families of their own, and with that comes a different set of issues.

For any who stopped watching I can promise that you're missing Mark Schawn at his very best right now. This whole hit and run storyline wit Jamie and Brooke, and Nathan's professor's son is a fanastic storyline, and much needed break from the usual Psycho's and general family drama. This season of OTH is the best since Chad and Hilarie left.

  20. Nothing to add :)
I believe we all miss Chad and Hilarie in a way and at first I agreed to those people saying OTH isn't what it used to be but you're so right! The show's changed but that doesn't mean it's become worse. It's just ...different and I still love it :)

  21. one tree hill has become coming like a women centric show, no offence we need big men show, since smallville is leaving its only TVD and supernatural, they should keep nikita, i know its great even thou i have first three episodes planning to all that in the summmer

  22. The show being old is what makes it so good! it never fails to remember where it has come from. the whole cast and crew have really made this show something lovable and one i can watch over and over. I watch all the old seasons over and over again and i never get sick of them. i am sad to hear that season 9 will be the last though i hope they find an amazing way to end it which i have no doubt they will. i would like to see a 10 years later scene where we see jamie and lydia grow up and go to high school...
i was rather hoping to see them grow and change as we have jamie. BUT!! not all shows can last forever, although i do believe this show could outlast itself if all cast members where on board. BUT they have given us 8 years of amazing drama and ill always love them for that :)
one tree hill will never die in my eyes <3

  23. for all who do not watch OTH. I think its best you dont make comments on it. The show is a highlight to some, including myself. Honestly, OTH should definantly have another season. Even though it is an older show. its one of  the best, and also has one of the most amazing scripts ever written, even in the 8th season. They are still giving us more to look foward to. Also for some of us that are obsessed with the show, would be terribly dissapointed to see it go.
