It was the moment fans had been waiting for last night as Grey's Anatomy honoured the songs that made the show famous in its musical episode "Song Beneath the Song".
The episode was very emotional as the team of surgeons at Seattle Grace battled to save Callie and her baby after being injured in a serious car crash. The episode involved different members of the cast singing their renditions of songs that had been a part of Grey's. The first song sung, "Chasing Cars", was performed by Callie, Owen and Bailey. Their version of the song fitted very well within the episode and I really enjoyed it.
Lexie gave us her rendition of "Breathe" as she tried to comfort Mark. She revealed to Mark that she doesn't hate him for what he did. Lexie and Mark are so damn cute together. I'm glad they had this scene, even though Lexie did choose Avery at the end of the episode.
Other songs covered included "Running on Sunshine", which was fab and also "Grace" which was a very beautiful performance. The cast also did a group performance of "How to Save a Life" which was very touching and a parallel to when the song was used in an earlier episode. Overall, some of the singing wasn't outstanding or great, but who cares. This episode was about honouring those songs! Some songs fitted better than others and at times I did think the music almost got in the way of the story but the whole concept went well together.
Back to the story, Mark and Arizona continued to argue throughout the episode over whether the baby or Callie should be more of a priority. Surprisingly, Arizona wanted the baby to be saved as she knew Callie could not live without it. Mark told Arizona that she "is nothing" in the family. This was heartbreaking to watch, Arizona did not deserve that. It had been building for a long time though, later on, we got to see Mark apologise to Arizona. It looks like the two of them might finally start to get on.
Addison had to deliver Callie's baby in order to save Callie. Arizona managed to revive the baby and both Callie and the baby survived. The episode ended with Callie (Sara Ramirez), singing her rendition of "The Story". Possibly my favourite song of the episode. It was so powerful and Sara has an amazing voice. It really helped sum up what the episode had been about. The episode ended with Callie opening her eyes and telling Arizona she would marry her. (Yay!)
Overall, I think the concept of the episode worked very well. It didn't quite feel like classic Grey's Anatomy but the songs used reminded us of where the show had come from and the "old days". It was great for a one-off episode but I'm not sure it would work if more episodes like it were to be done. The cast, old and new, all delivered brilliant performances and you could really feel their passion for the show and the music.
