Grey's Anatomy - 7.19 - It's a Long Way Back - Review

After a short hiatus, Grey's Anatomy returned with the episode "It's a Long Way Back".

The episode largely focused on Callie's recovery after the crash as well her baby, Sofia. After the last episode, we were left wondering if the baby would survive after being born prematurely. At the beginning of the episode, it didn't look great for Sofia. However, by the end of the episode, Callie, having undergone another surgery herself, was allowed to go home with the baby. What were we expecting really? Shonda takes a lot of risks with the show, but killing of a Calzona baby, I just don't think she would be able to escape the consequences of that. Plus, that baby is absolutely gorgeous!

It was nice to see Arizona, Mark and Callie all get on for once. Before Callie took Sofia home, she needed some reassurance from Bailey which was also a very touching scene. Bailey is one of my favourite characters on the show. She may be tough on the outside, but she can empathise, and understand what the other characters go through, and that makes her a brilliant character.

Adele also found herself on Derek's trial last night. The Chief had been hiding just how bad her Alzheimers was. This was also confirmed during a difficult scene between Meredith and Adele where Adele mistook Meredith for her mother and referred to the affair. After looking at the patient files, Meredith discovered that Adele was to receive placebo and not the medicine so she switched the files. I'm not too sure what effect this could have on the trial itself or if it could have negative consequences for Derek. I'm sure we'll find out in the next couple of weeks.

The episode also focused on Alex and his plans to get a group of children over from Africa to receive much needed medical attention. I love seeing this side of Alex, he has a real dedication to his patients and a passion for medicine. We've not seen this side of him for a while so it was very refreshing for his character. His dedication really showed when he arranged for the children to come even though he did not have the funds do to so. However, a deceased patient of his left him money which turned up just in time to support the children.

Overall, the episode was a nice conclusion to the whole Callie, Mark and Arizona drama which has been dominating the season. I want to wish that we get a chance to focus on other characters too now, but with Callie and Arizona getting married, I just don't think that will be the case. There doesn't seem to be much set up for the finale yet so let's hope for some gritty action and big plot twists next week.

What did you guys think?

  1. I really liked everyone taking Callie to see the baby. It was the old Grey's where they take risks to make a friend happy.

I also LOVED Alex's plot. He cared so much about those kids, more than he thought he would when he just pulled the idea of bringing them over out of his ass.

Meredith having a storyline not having to do with the most boring "we want a baby" storyline in history was nice. It was reminiscent of Izzie cutting the LVAD - making an ethically wrong move out of emotion. I am definitely more interested in the fall out from this than anything baby related.

  2. Same here, I'm bored of the baby stuff now. Calzona need to step aside and let Meredith have her show back!

  3. This has been the most boring, one-dimensional season of Grey's Anatomy ever. I'm so tired of the Calzona - Mark storyline that if I don't hear of them ever again, it will be too soon...I was so hopeful that they would focused on other characters as well...Christina barely showed up, not to speak of Owen...MerDer absent throughout the season...Get it over with this over-extended Callie story...

  4. Although a little unrealistic (Callie's baby's chances of surviving were so low, it was really unrealistic she did) I'm glad the baby didn't die. I agree with the things you said, and I'm happy they've found something else for Meredith too. But I bet they'll find a way to bring the MerDer want a baby drama with those African children; I wouldn't be surprised if they adopt one, I remember someone saying some of them are orphans.

I also really like to see Stark's development as a person. I didn't like him at all at first, but now I do, he's starting to remind me a bit of Sheldon from Private Practice. I don't like April, but I have a feeling she'll fall for him too, I hope they're happy together if it they come to therms.

You didn't leave a review on Teddy and Henry, what did you think? From the first moment we met him, I instantly fell in love with a possible relationship between them, and love to see them bonding more yesterday. I broke my heart when Teddy stopped by to drop some pasta for him and we got to see he had it all planned out to have dinner with her. So sad. I liked that shrink earlier this season, but I like Henry so much more, I hope Teddy gets to pick him in the end. <3

  5. I will definitely discuss Teddy and Henry when they get some long scenes together! I like the way their relationship is progressing though, although it is a little predictable. I think Teddy will pick Henry, as long as Shonda doesn't do a Denny on us again ;)

It's nice to see Stark and April's relationship develop. Stark has the potential to be a very interesting character but I think we need to go back to the originals for a while now. They are being missed.
