King ratings TBAEvery spring, the Stanley Cup race dominates Canadian TV ratings.
We're just as hockey-mad this year, but the passion seems to be saved for just two teams, the Canadiens and the Canucks.
Viewers don’t seem that interested at this point in NHL playoff games featuring only teams from the States.
That other race, the Canadian federal election, was supposed to pump up numbers for the Sun News Network. The so-called "Fox News North" launched a week ago Monday and so far has not had much impact on Canadian news numbers.
Beyond hockey and politics, the usual Dance, Idol and Survivor shows dominated the overnight, estimated 2+ Canadian TV ratings the week of April 18-24. There was also a strong showing Saturday from an old alien friend: Doctor Who:
MONDAY
CTV’s Dancing with the Stars danced to the top spot Monday night with 2,470,000 viewers, although close behind (and ahead in key demos) was CBC’s round one coverage of the Boston/Montreal Stanley Cup tilt (2,312,000). On Global, House was down but not out on a busy night with 1,896,000 overnight, estimated viewers. A late game on CBC between Detroit and Phoenix drew 794,000. TSN scored just 424,000 for their round one match up between Buffalo and Philly.
Drawing well against all that hockey was Hawaii FIVE-0 (1,517,000), Mike & Molly (1,410,000), The Chicago Code (1,305,000) and Law & Order: LA (1,217,000).
City held steady with How I Met Your Mother (481,000). Episode two of Top Chef Canada did 218,000 on Food. Endgame is still airing Monday nights on Showcase where just 75,000 tuned in last week.
Monday also saw the launch of the Sun News Network. Controversial headliner Ezra Levant's The Source drew 31,000 estimated viewers that first night, but was down to 12,000 across Canada by Wednesday and less than a thousand viewers in the 25-54-year-old demo.
TUESDAY
CBC scored top spot Tuesday as 2,468,000 tuned in for the Canucks/Blackhawks game. That easily topped CTV’s Dancing with the Stars results show (1,945,000) as well as the solid if unspectacular return of Glee on Global (1,685,000).
Back-to-back NCIS: Los Angeles episodes drew 1,452,000 and 895,000 on Global. Law & Order: SVU did 941,000 on CTV. The second (and last!) episode of already cancelled The Paul Reiser Show did 764,000 on CTV.
City’s big shows Tuesday were The Biggest Loser (648,000) and Dana Delany’s new medical import, Body of Proof (596,000).
TSN found 404,000 for their late San Jose/Los Angeles playoff game. Canadian Pickers was the pick of 336,000 on History behind some big numbers for some Pawn Stars episodes (415,000, 488,000). Over on /A\, 219,000 joined Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution.
WEDNESDAY
American Idol (2,579,000) and Survivor: Redemption Island (2,516,000) voted hockey off the top of the ratings for one night at least. CBC topped a million with Pittsburgh at Tampa Bay (1,021,000) and pulled another 746,000 for the late Detroit at Phoenix game.
CTV followed the Idol Top 7 sing off with the new Christian Slater comedy Breaking In (1,008,000). Criminal Minds: SB followed at 10 (1,057,000). Global’s night included NCIS (737,000) and the woefully under-viewed Friday Night Lights (212,000).
City had a solid night with Modern Family (753,000), a strong return for Cougar Town (578,000) followed by back-to-back episodes of Elisha Cuthbert’s new comedy Happy Endings (381,000, 357,000).
TSN aired two Round One NHL playoff games: Washington vs. Rangers (614,000) and Ducks at Nashville (566,000).
Showcase’s month-long Can-con orgy may be winning more CRTC brownie points than viewers. The new thriller XIII drew a modest 134,000 for its opener Wednesday.
THURSDAY
Collars tightened on the ice as well as at CBC as Boston at Montreal (2,456,000) and Chicago at Vancouver (2,325,000) delivered viewers if not crucial Canadian team wins. Relocating American Idol back to CTV was good enough for third place on the night (2,206,000). Other million-plus winners Thursday included The Mentalist (1,741,000), CSI (1,331,000) and Bones (1,327,000).
Old reliable SpongeBob SquarePants soaked up 441,000 viewers on YTV. Vampire Diaries on A flew off with 336,000 overnight, estimated viewers. City’s top show was Rules of Engagement (413,000). TSN found hardly any takers for its late night skate with San Jose and L.A. (199,000).
FRIDAY
Hockey wins again but this time on TSN, where the Buffalo/Philly game netted 1,318,000 viewers. The late TSN game between Nashville and Anaheim did 826,000.
The Listener registered a sound 873,000 on CTV, leading into a screening of The Wedding Planner (786,000).
The Blue Jays drew 686,000 for a ball game on Sportsnet. Girls Night Out, a country music special, hit a high note for A with 562,000 viewers. An American Pickers marathon on History got as high as 420,000 viewers.
No hockey means no viewers on CBC where an old Anne Murray special (343,000) was a poor ratings substitute. Sanctuary found 235,000 for its second episode of the season, up from last week’s premiere.
Global also airs programs on Fridays.
SATURDAY
The second biggest score of the week went to CBC for this Montreal/Boston tilt. The overtime squeaker netted 3,347,000 viewers. Another 2,484,000 stuck around for the ten minute post game show. Hell, even a Mr. Bean movie drew 403,000 at 11:15 p.m. ET.
TSN also had hockey Saturday, including a late afternoon Washington/Rangers game (752,000) and, much later, L.A. at San Jose (447,000).
Meanwhile, over on Space, the sixth season premiere of the latest Doctor Who landed 538,000 at 8 p.m., making it the most-watched Space broadcast of the year.
SUNDAY
There was plenty of drama on the top show of the week: Vancouver at Chicago. CBC scored 3,539,000 nail-biting viewers. An overnight, estimated 3,160,000 stuck around for the 28 minute post-game show. TSN also drew a crowd for their two hockey games Sunday, Philly/Buffalo (1,065,000) and Anaheim/Nashville (877,000).
Off the ice, CTV’s The Amazing Race was caught by 2,326,000. Another 1,210,000 watched Desperate Housewives. Undercover Boss drew 706,000 at 7 p.m. On Global, 1,032,000 saw LaToya Jackson get fired on The Celebrity Apprentice. The earlier animated Fox comedies were all reruns heading into May sweeps. City’s top show Sunday night was America’s Funniest Home Videos (570,000). Sunday night saw ratings slip 10 % for The Kennedys on History (489,000). The Borgias seems to have found its level on Bravo! (258,000) as has Wipeout Canada at TVTropolis (231,000).
